Theta Aurigae (Latinized from θ Aurigae, abbreviated Theta Aur, θ Aur) is a binary star in the constellation of Auriga. Based upon parallax measurements, the distance to this system is about 166 light-years (51 parsecs ). [1]
The two components are designated Theta Aurigae A (also named Mahasim [10] ) and B.
θ Aurigae (Latinised to Theta Aurigae) is the system's Bayer designation. The designations of the two components as Theta Aurigae A and B derives from the convention used by the Washington Multiplicity Catalog (WMC) for multiple star systems, and adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). [11]
Some authors state that Theta Aurigae had no traditional name, [12] although Richard Hinckley Allen makes a passing reference about the name Mahasim, as a name also used, with various spellings, for Eta Aurigae and Lambda Herculis, [13] from the Arabic المِعْصَم al-miʽşam "the wrist" (of the charioteer). In 2016, the IAU organized a Working Group on Star Names (WGSN) [14] to catalog and standardize proper names for stars. The WGSN decided to attribute proper names to individual stars rather than entire multiple systems. [15] It approved the name Mahasim for the component Theta Aurigae A on 30 June 2017 and it is now so included in the List of IAU-approved Star Names. [10]
It is known as 五車四 (the Fourth Star of the Five Chariots) in Chinese [16]
The primary component, Theta Aurigae A, is a large star with more than three times the mass of the Sun and nearly five times the Sun's radius. It is radiating 214 times the Sun's luminosity from its outer atmosphere at an effective temperature of 10,220 K, giving it the white hue of an A-type star. The star has a stellar classification of A0pSi, [3] with the 'pSi' suffix indicating it is a chemically peculiar star with an abnormal abundance of silicon.
The primary is classified an Alpha2 Canum Venaticorum type variable star and has a surface magnetic field of about 1 kG. [9] Its projected rotational velocity is 55 km s−1, [9] with the star completing a rotation in only 3.6 days. [8] The axis of rotation is inclined by an angle of 51°±6° to the line of sight from the Earth. [9]
The secondary, Theta Aurigae B, is a +7.2 magnitude companion, 4.5 [3] magnitudes fainter than the primary, located at an angular separation of 3.91 arcseconds along a position angle of 304.9° as of 2002. [18] This is an F-type main sequence star with a stellar classification in the range F2-5 V. [3]
The mean combined apparent magnitude of the system is +2.65 but the variation of the primary causes the system's brightness to range from magnitude +2.62 to +2.70 with a period of 1.37 days. The system is an X-ray source with a luminosity of 9.49 × 1026 erg s−1. [3]
Castor is the second-brightest object in the zodiac constellation of Gemini. It has the Bayer designation α Geminorum, which is Latinised to Alpha Geminorum and abbreviated Alpha Gem or α Gem. With an apparent visual magnitude of 1.58, it is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. Castor appears singular to the naked eye, but it is actually a sextuple star system organized into three binary pairs. Although it is the 'α' (alpha) member of the constellation, it is fainter than 'β' (beta) Geminorum, Pollux.
Beta Aurigae, officially named Menkalinan, is a binary star system in the northern constellation of Auriga. The combined apparent visual magnitude of the system is 1.9, making it the second-brightest member of the constellation after Capella. Using the parallax measurements made during the Hipparcos mission, the distance to this star system can be estimated as 81.1 light-years, give or take a half-light-year margin of error.
Epsilon Scorpii, formally named Larawag, is a star in the southern zodiac constellation of Scorpius. It has an apparent visual magnitude of +2.3, making it the fifth-brightest member of the constellation. Parallax measurements made during the Hipparcos mission provide an estimated distance to this star of around 63.7 light-years from the Sun.
Theta Eridani, Latinized from θ Eridani, is a binary system in the constellation of Eridanus with a combined apparent magnitude of 2.88. Its two components are designated θ1 Eridani, formally named Acamar, and θ2 Eridani. The system's distance from the Sun based on parallax measurements is approximately 165 light-years.
Beta Cancri, also named Tarf, is the brightest star in the zodiacal constellation of Cancer. It has an apparent visual magnitude of +3.5 and an absolute magnitude of −1.2. Based on parallax measurements obtained by the Gaia spacecraft, it is approximately 323 light-years distant from the Sun. An exoplanet, designated Beta Cancri b, is believed to be orbiting the star.
Alcyone, designated η Tauri, is a star in the constellation of Taurus. Approximately 440 light-years from the Sun, it is the brightest star in the Pleiades open cluster, which is a young cluster, around 100 million years old. There are a number of fainter stars very close to Alcyone, some of which are members of the same cluster.
Theta Tauri is a wide double star in the constellation of Taurus and a member of the Hyades open cluster.
Merope, designated 23 Tauri, is a star in the constellation of Taurus and a member of the Pleiades star cluster. It is approximately 440 light-years (135 pc) away.
Eta Aurigae, officially named Haedus, is a star in the northern constellation of Auriga. With an apparent visual magnitude of 3.18, it is visible to the naked eye. Based upon parallax measurements made during the Hipparcos mission, this star is approximately 243 light-years distant from the Sun.
9 Aurigae is a star system in Auriga (constellation). It has an apparent magnitude of about 5, making it visible to the naked eye in many suburban skies. Parallax estimates made by the Hipparcos spacecraft put it at about 86 light-years from the solar system, although individual Gaia Data Release 3 parallaxes place all three components at 88 light years.
AR Aurigae, also known by its Flamsteed designation 17 Aurigae, is a binary star in the constellation Auriga. Based on parallax measurements made by the Hipparcos spacecraft, it is approximately 461 light-years from Earth.
θ Pegasi, Latinized as Theta Pegasi, is a single star in the equatorial constellation of Pegasus, lying about 7.5 degrees southwest of Enif. It has the traditional name Biham, and the Flamsteed designation 26 Pegasi. This object is visible to the naked eye as a white-hued point of light with an apparent visual magnitude of +3.52. The system is located 92 light years from the Sun based on parallax, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −8 km/s.
Theta Leonis, Latinized from θ Leonis, formally named Chertan, is a star in the constellation of Leo. With an apparent visual magnitude of +3.324 it is visible to the naked eye and forms one of the brighter stars in the constellation. The distance from the Sun can be directly determined from parallax measurements, yielding a value of about 165 light-years.
Beta Piscium or β Piscium, formally named Fumalsamakah, is a blue-white hued star in the zodiac constellation of Pisces. Its apparent magnitude is 4.40, meaning it can be faintly seen with the naked eye. Based on parallax measurements taken during the Hipparcos mission, it is about 410 light-years distant from the Sun.
Pi1 Cygni (π1 Cygni, abbreviated Pi1 Cyg, π1 Cyg) is a binary star in the northern constellation of Cygnus. It is visible to the naked eye, having a combined apparent visual magnitude of 4.66. The distance to this system can be roughly gauged by its annual parallax shift of 1.89 mas, which yields a separation of around 1,700 light years from the Sun, give or take a hundred light years.
Tau Pegasi, formally named Salm, is a magnitude 4.6 star 162 light years away in the constellation of Pegasus. With about twice the mass of the Sun and thirty times as luminous, tt is a δ Scuti variable star with its brightness changing by a few hundredths of a magnitude over about an hour.
Epsilon Crucis, ε Crucis, also known as Ginan, is a single, orange-hued star in the southern constellation of Crux. Measurements made by the Gaia spacecraft showed an annual parallax shift of 14.2 mas, which provides a distance estimate of about 230 light years. The star can be seen with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 3.58. It is moving closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −4.60 km/s.
Theta Columbae, also named Elkurud, is a solitary star in the southern constellation of Columba. It is faintly visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 5.02. Based upon parallax measurements taken during the Hipparcos mission, it is roughly 720 light-years distant from the Sun. At its present distance, the visual magnitude of the star is reduced by an interstellar extinction factor of 0.11. It is currently moving away from the Sun with a radial velocity of 45.3 km/s. The star made its closest approach about 4.7 million years ago when it underwent perihelion passage at a distance of 10.9 ly (3.33 pc).
LY Aurigae is a multiple star system in the constellation Auriga. It is an eclipsing binary variable star, dropping in brightness by 0.7 magnitudes every 4 days. The system is around a thousand light years away in the Auriga OB1 stellar association.
8 Draconis, formally named Taiyi, is a single star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Draco. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 34.14 mas as seen from the Earth, the star is located approximately 96 light-years from the Sun. It is moving further away with a heliocentric radial velocity of +9 km/s, having come within 40.6 ly some 2.6 million years ago.
