Town is the name of a local government community and electoral ward in the town of Merthyr Tydfil, in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales.
The Town community covers Merthyr Tydfil town centre east of the River Taff, stretching as far as Merthyr Common and the border with Caerphilly County Borough. It includes the residential areas of Cae-draw, Penyard, Penyrheol, Thomastown, Twynyrodyn and Ysgubor Newydd. [1] The community of Troed-y-rhiw borders to the south, Cyfarthfa to the west, Park, Penydarren and Dowlais to the north and the Caerphilly community of Darran Valley to the east.
According to the 2011 UK Census the population of the community/ward was 7,671. [2]
As well as the High Street and town centre the community includes Merthyr Tydfil railway station and Merthyr Tydfil bus station. Merthyr Tydfil's main Church in Wales church, St Tydfil's, is located at the bottom of the High Street. There are a number of schools in the community, including Cyfarthfa High School.
Town is an electoral ward which elects four councillors to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. At the May 2017 elections Town elected three Independent councillors (John Thomas, Kevin O'Neill, Andrew Barry) topped the poll, with the fourth councillor from the Labour Party (Dai Jones). [3] Town has elected a broad political spectrum of councillors since 1995. Between 1995 and 1999 and 2012–2017 the ward elected four Labour councillors. Between 1999 and 2004 the ward was represented by Plaid Cymru. Between 2004 and 2008 three of the councillors were elected under the People Before Politics (PBP) banner. Between 2008 and 2012 the ward was represented by the Liberal Democrats. [4]
By-elections took place in the ward on 23 October 2008 and 7 May 2015, both won by Labour. [5]
Merthyr Tydfil is the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales, administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. It is about 23 miles (37 km) north of Cardiff. Often called just Merthyr, it is said to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, who according to legend was slain at Merthyr by pagans about 480 CE. Merthyr generally means "martyr" in modern Welsh, but here closer to the Latin martyrium: a place of worship built over a martyr's relics. Similar place names in south Wales are Merthyr Cynog, Merthyr Dyfan and Merthyr Mawr.
Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by Gerald Jones of the Welsh Labour Party. It was established for the 1983 general election.

Treharris is a small town and community in the Taff Bargoed Valley in the south of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, South Wales. It is located about 0.6 miles (1.0 km) west of Trelewis, from which it is separated by the Taff Bargoed river, and 0.9 miles (1.4 km) from Nelson in Caerphilly county borough and has a population of 6,356 from the 2011 Census. As a community, Treharris includes the villages of Quakers Yard and Edwardsville. Due to steepness and narrowness of both the Taff and Taff Bargoed valleys at Treharris several notable bridges and viaducts have been built in the area.

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. In mid 2018, it had an estimated population of 60,183 making it the smallest local authority in Wales by both population and land area. It is located in the historic county of Glamorgan and takes its name from the town with the same name. The county borough consists of the northern part of the Taff Valley and the smaller neighbouring Taff Bargoed Valley. It borders the counties of Rhondda Cynon Taf to the west, Caerphilly County Borough to the east, and Powys to the north.

The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey, which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey, the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years, but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election.

The 2017 Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council election took place on Thursday 4 May 2017 to elect the 33 members of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council in Wales. This was on the same day as other 2017 United Kingdom local elections. The Council shifted back from Labour to Independent control.
