U.S. Route 36 (US 36) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that runs from Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado to Uhrichsville, Ohio. In the state of Indiana, it is part of the Indiana State Road system that runs across the central portion of the state from the Illinois state line near Dana to the Ohio state line near Spartanburg. In the Indianapolis area, US 36 overlaps the southern section of Interstate 465 (I-465), bypassing the downtown area where the route formerly went.
Entering into Indiana, US 36 continues eastward in a straight line, serving Dana via SR 71. Just west of Highland and Hillsdale, the route meets SR 63 at a parclo interchange. The route then crosses over the Wabash River and enters Montezuma. After meandering eastward, the route intersects with US 41 in Rockville before entering the town's downtown area. Further east, the route serves the following routes and towns: SR 59 in Bellmore, Hollandsburg west of a lake, Morton, US 231, Bainbridge, SR 75 in New Winchester, SR 39 in Danville, Gale, and SR 267 in Avon. Entering through the city limit of Indianapolis, US 36 meets I-465/I-74 at another parclo interchange. US 36 is directed to travel along the southern loop of I-465. Rockville Road continues east toward downtown Indianapolis. [2]
Along the southern loop portion of I-465, the road contains numerous signed (Interstate highways) and unsigned (US and state highways) concurrencies. Shortly after US 36 gets onto I-465, US 40 joins the concurrency southward. The next two exits (Sam Jones Expressway and I-70) serve the Indianapolis International Airport. The interchange with I-70 is a combination interchange. After leaving the vicinity of the airport, the beltway begins to curve eastward. At the next exit after I-70, SR 67 joins the concurrency. South of the Harding Street Generating Station and a quarry, the beltway meets an interchange with I-69, which joins the beltway heading eastbound. At the next interchange, US 31 enters the beltway eastward as well. The beltway then meets I-65 at another combination interchange. After curving north, the I-74 splits off eastward, while US 421 joins northward. US 52 then enters the beltway northward; at this point until the next exit, this section has the highest amount of routes (8 routes). At the next exit, US 40 branches off eastward. The beltway then meets I-70 at yet another combination interchange. US 36, along with SR 67, eventually diverges northeastward at the city limit of Lawrence. [2]
Both US 36 and SR 67 travel along Pendleton Pike on their way to Pendleton. Between Lawrence and Pendleton, the routes intersect SR 234 in McCordsville, enter the communities of Woodbury, Fortville, and Ingalls. In Pendleton, SR 9 travels northward with the concurrency. Shortly after intersecting with SR 38, US 36 turns east, while SR 38 continues north toward I-69. For the remainder of the route in Indiana, US 36 comes across the following: SR 109 in Emporia, Mechanicsburg, Sulphur Springs, SR 3 east of Mount Summit, SR 103, Mooreland, US 35 in Losantsville, SR 1 in Modoc, US 27 in Lynn, and SR 277. 1 mile (1.6 km) after SR 277, US 36 enters the state of Ohio. [2]
Initially, the US 36 alignment between Montezuma and Indianapolis was signed as State Road 31. [3] In 1926, US 36 was formed to replace SR 31 as a whole. The state route number also conflicted with another U.S. route with the same number, which necessitated the removal of SR 31. [4]
After US 36 was formed, the route in Indiana only traveled from the Illinois state line to US 40 (Washington Street) in Indianapolis. [4] In 1931, US 36 was extended from Indianapolis to the state line at Union City (destined toward Cadiz) via SR 67 (Indianapolis to Muncie) and SR 28 (Muncie to Ohio state line). [5] The state routes were retained however. [6] [7] The next year, SR 28 was relocated northward, while SR 32 took the place of SR 28's former alignment. [8] Later that year, US 36 was rerouted southward from Pendleton to Greenville along, in large part, its current routing. [9] [10]
Up until 1975, US 36 traveled along the following roads in Indianapolis: Rockville Road, Washington Street, West Street, Northwestern Avenue, 38th Street, and Pendleton Pike. [11] [12] [13] [14] From 1975 onwards, US 36 was rerouted along the southern edge of I-465. [15] [16]

Interstate 70 (I-70) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the United States that runs from I-15 near Cove Fort, Utah, to I-695 and Maryland Route 570 (MD 570) in Woodlawn, just outside Baltimore, Maryland.
Interstate 65 (I-65) is a major north–south Interstate Highway in the central United States. As with most primary Interstates ending in 5, it is a major crosscountry, north–south route, connecting between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Its southern terminus is located at an interchange with I-10 in Mobile, Alabama, and its northern terminus is at an interchange with US 12 (US 12) and US 20 in Gary, Indiana, just southeast of Chicago. I-65 connects several major metropolitan areas in the Midwest and Southern US. It connects the four largest cities in Alabama: Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Huntsville. It also serves as one of the main north–south routes through Nashville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; and Indianapolis, Indiana, each a major metropolitan area in its respective state.
Interstate 69 (I-69) is an Interstate Highway in the United States currently consisting of eight unconnected segments. The longest segment runs from Evansville, Indiana, northeast to the Canadian border in Port Huron, Michigan, and includes the original continuous segment from Indianapolis, Indiana, to Port Huron of 355.8 miles (572.6 km). The remaining separated segments are variously completed and posted or not posted sections of an extension southwest to the Mexican border in Texas. Of this extension—nicknamed the NAFTA Superhighway because it would help trade with Canada and Mexico spurred by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)—seven pieces in Laredo, Texas; Pharr, Texas; Brownsville, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas; Houston, Texas; northwestern Mississippi; and Memphis, Tennessee, have been built or upgraded and signposted as I-69. Indiana completed the fifth segment that extends I-69 through that state in August 2024.
U.S. Route 31 or U.S. Highway 31 (US 31) is a major north–south U.S. highway connecting southern Alabama to northern Michigan. Its southern terminus is at an intersection with US 90/US 98 in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Its northern terminus is at an interchange with Interstate 75 (I-75) south of Mackinaw City, Michigan.
State Road 37 (SR 37) is a major route in the U.S. state of Indiana, running as a four-lane divided highway for 110 miles of its course.
U.S. Route 35 (US 35) is a United States Highway that runs southeast-northwest for approximately 412 miles (663 km) from the western suburbs of Charleston, West Virginia to northern Indiana. Although the highway is physically southeast-northwest, it is nominally north–south. The highway's southern terminus is in Teays Valley, West Virginia, near Scott Depot, at Interstate 64 (I-64). Its northern terminus is near Michigan City, Indiana, at US 20. The West Virginia portion of the highway is mostly expressway, becoming a freeway shortly before it crosses the Ohio River into Ohio. The Ohio portion has been upgraded to a four-lane highway/freeway between the West Virginia state line and Trotwood, west of Dayton.
U.S. Route 36 (US 36) is an east–west United States Numbered Highway that travels approximately 1,414 miles (2,276 km) from Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado to Uhrichsville, Ohio. The highway's western terminus is at Deer Ridge Junction, an intersection in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, where it meets US 34. Its eastern terminus is at US 250 in Uhrichsville, Ohio.
Interstate 465 (I-465), also known as the USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway, is the beltway circling Indianapolis, Indiana. It is roughly rectangular in shape and has a perimeter of approximately 53 miles (85 km). It lies almost completely within the boundaries of Marion County, except for two short sections on the north leg in Boone and Hamilton counties. It intersects with I-65, I-69, I-70, and I-74 and provides additional access to I-65 via I-865.
Interstate 865 (I-865) is an east–west auxiliary Interstate Highway northwest of Indianapolis, Indiana. It is a short connector between I-65 and I-465, running for five miles (8.0 km) and completely concurrent with U.S. Route 52 (US 52). The highway was originally numbered as a branch of I-465 but was renumbered in 2002 to prevent I-465 from intersecting with itself. This section was previously known as the Dog Leg, and the mile markers ran from 900 to 905.
State Road 67 in the U.S. state of Indiana cuts a diagonal route from southwest to northeast across the state from the north side of Vincennes to Indianapolis to the Ohio state line, where it becomes State Route 29 east of Bryant.
State Road 14 is an east–west highway route which traverses the northern portion of the U.S. State of Indiana. Its western terminus is at U.S. Route 41 in Enos, and since 1995 its eastern terminus is at Interstate 69 in Fort Wayne.
Interstate 65 (I-65) in the US state of Indiana traverses from the south-southeastern Falls City area bordering Louisville, Kentucky, through the centrally located capital city of Indianapolis, to the northwestern Calumet Region of the Hoosier State which is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Indiana portion of I-65 begins in Jeffersonville after crossing the Ohio River and travels mainly north, passing just west of Columbus prior to reaching the Indianapolis metro area. Upon reaching Indianapolis, the route alignment of I-65 begins to run more to the northwest and subsequently passes Lafayette on that city's east and north sides. Northwest of there, in west-central Jasper County, the route again curves more northward as it approaches the Calumet Region. Shortly after passing a major junction with I-80 and I-94, I-65 reaches its northern national terminus in Gary at US Highway 12/US Highway 20 after an interchange on I-90. I-65 covers 261.27 miles (420.47 km) in the state of Indiana. This is one of the principal Interstate Highways that cross the state, and, more specifically, intersect at the city of Indianapolis, that has given the state the nickname of "Crossroads of America".
Interstate 70 (I-70) in the US state of Indiana travels east–west across the central portion of the state, passing through the capital of Indianapolis. I-70 crosses from Illinois into Indiana near Terre Haute and departs into Ohio at Richmond. It covers 156.6 miles (252.0 km) in Indiana, paralleling U.S. Highway 40 (US 40), the old National Road.
Interstate 69 (I-69), also known as the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Highway south of Indianapolis, in the US state of Indiana travels southwest to northeast, connecting all 3 of the state's largest cities, Evansville, Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne. The highway proceeds north to the state of Michigan, reaching its capital city, Lansing and beyond, and is planned to eventually proceed south to the state of Kentucky and beyond.
U.S. Route 27 (US 27) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that runs from Miami, Florida, to Fort Wayne in the U.S. state of Indiana. In Indiana, it is a state road that enters the state in College Corner, Ohio, and West College Corner. The 117.765 miles (189.524 km) of US 27 that lie within Indiana serve as a major conduit. Most of the highway is listed on the National Highway System. Various sections are a rural two-lane highway or an urbanized four-lane divided highway. The northernmost community along the highway is Fort Wayne in the northeast part of the state. The highway ends at an interchange with Interstate 69 (I-69) north of downtown Fort Wayne after serving the east central and northeast regions of Indiana.
