The qualification for the UEFA Women's Euro 1997 was held between 17 September 1995 and 29 September 1996. The first-placed of the group stage qualified directly. The second-placed and the third-placed teams played in two playoff matches for four other berths.

The 1995 UEFA Intertoto Cup was the first edition of the tournament administered by the UEFA. The 1996 Summer Olympics—based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States—marked the first time that women participated in the Olympic association football tournament. The tournament featured eight women's national teams from four continental confederations. The teams were drawn into two groups of four and each group played a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams advanced to the knockout stage, beginning with the semi-finals and culminating with the gold medal match on August 1, 1996.

The qualifying rounds for the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League began on 12 July 2000. In total, there were three qualifying rounds which provided 16 clubs to join the group stage.

Group 6 consisted of six of the 50 teams entered into the European zone: Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Malta, Slovakia, Spain, and Yugoslavia.
