The Umpqua pikeminnow formerly called the Umpqua squawfish [2] (Ptychocheilus umpquae) is a large cyprinid fish endemic to Oregon, and is the smallest species of pikeminnow. It is native to the Umpqua and Siuslaw river drainages. [3]
The Umpqua pikeminnow has around 60 to 63 scales between the head and dorsal fin. It also usually has 66 to 81 scales along its lateral line, 9 rays on its dorsal fin, and 8 rays on its anal fin. They can reach 44 cm (17 in) in total length, but are more often 31 cm (12 in). [2] [3]
Umpqua pikeminnow are found in the Southwest part of Oregon, usually along the Umpqua and Siuslaw river drainages, [2] as well as the Siltcoos, Woahink, and Tahkenitch lakes. [4] It has also been introduced in the Rogue River. [5] The Rogue River introduction has two possible sources: 1) in 1994 a flood breached the north Rogue drainage divide, causing pikeminnow to escape through the Cow Creek system, [6] or 2) in 1978 through an unscreened farm pond on Wolf Creek. [7]
The fish inhabit the pools or sluggish runs of small rivers and creeks, [2] usually found in waters less than 1 m deep. [8]
While the Umpqua pikeminnow's life history is not well documented, it is likely similar to that of their closest relative, the Northern pikeminnow; adults move upriver to spawn in the summer months, typically distributing their eggs amongst substrate such as gravel. The eggs hatch within a week or two, and larvae drift downstream as they are caught against the current. The larvae eventually reach shallow, low-velocity parts of the rivers, where they feed and grow over the next few years, gradually moving into deeper waters as they grow. [9]
Adult Umpqua pikeminnow predate on salmon, steelhead, and trout while juvenile individuals compete with these native fish for the same resources. [7]
Juvenile Umpqua pikeminnow have been seen aggregating with other fish species, such as Umpqua chub and juvenile Redside shiner. [10]
As of 2012, the IUCN Red List lists the Umpqua pikeminnow under least concern. Their population is considered stable with an undisclosed yet large population, but further studies may need to be conducted to determine if the population is slowly declining or not.
The evolutionary history of the Ptychocheilus genus was never well understood, and many studies disputed where the Umpqua pikeminnow should be placed. There had been some previous studies that suggested that the Umpqua pikeminnow may actually be a variant of the Northern pikeminnow, given their very close range and subtle differences, but has been disproven. [11]
The two prevailing theories grouped the Umpqua pikeminnow and Northern pikeminnow together as either the ancestral [12] or most recent group of the genus. [11] [13] Recent studies that investigated the Ptychocheilus genome suggests that the latter may be correct, but further analysis is required to understand the relation between the species and their close relatives, as the pikeminnow family may actually be from separate lineages. [13]
There is also evidence to suggest that the two Umpqua pikeminnow subpopulations in the Umpqua and Siuslaw drainages may actually represent two different species due to genomic differences between the two populations. [14]
The Umpqua pikeminnow, along with the Northern pikeminnow, have been considered "undesirable" or "nuisance" fish that got in the way of stocking river systems with more favorable species, [15] such as salmon and trout. [16] Because of this, some studies have been conducted to find a way to control Umpqua pikeminnow populations without causing nearly as much damage to the desired fish species. These chemicals include 1,1’-methylenedi-2-naphthol, more commonly known as squoxin, [15] [16] and 2-hydroxy-l-naphthyl-methane. [16] Squoxin was used in a field application treatment to exclusively eliminate all the pikeminnow in a small lagoon, proving to be an effective pikeminnow piscicide. [16]

Jenynsia is a genus of freshwater fishes in the family Anablepidae. Like Anableps species, they are onesided livebearers: some sources indicate that they only mate on one side, right-"handed" males with left-"handed" females and vice versa. However, other sources dispute this. These South American fish are viviparous.
The Northern pikeminnow, Columbia River dace or colloquially Squawfish is a large member of the minnow family, Leuciscidae. This predatory freshwater fish is native to northwestern North America, ranging from the Nass River basin to the Columbia River basin. A good deal of concern has been expressed regarding the impact northern pikeminnow populations may have on salmon in Columbia and Snake River impoundments.
Pikeminnows, formerly squawfish, are cyprinid fish of the genus Ptychocheilus consisting of four species native to western North America. Voracious predators, they are considered an "undesirable" species in many waters, largely due to the species' perceived tendency to prey upon small trout and salmon. First known in western science by the common name Columbia River dace, the four species all became lumped under the name "squawfish". In 1999, the American Fisheries Society adopted "pikeminnow" as the name it recommends, because Native Americans consider "squawfish" offensive.

The Colorado pikeminnow is the largest cyprinid fish of North America and one of the largest in the world, with reports of individuals up to 6 ft (1.8 m) long and weighing over 100 pounds (45 kg). Native to the Colorado River Basin of the southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico, it was formerly an important food fish for both Native Americans and European settlers. Once abundant and widespread in the basin, its numbers have declined to the point where it has been extirpated from the Mexican part of its range and was listed as endangered in the US part in 1967, a fate shared by the three other large Colorado Basin endemic fish species: bonytail chub, humpback chub, and razorback sucker. The Colorado pikeminnow is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, while its NatureServe conservation status is "critically imperiled".
The Durango shiner is an extinct species of freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae. It was found only in Mexico. The Durango shiner was native to the Rio Tunal, which forms the headwaters of the San Pedro Mezquital River, a Pacific slope river rising near Durango City, Durango, Mexico. It was taken there only in 1951 and 1961. Its closest relatives were the yellow shiner and the Ameca shiner.
The Atlantic needlefish is a common demersal needlefish species common in marinas and other areas with minimal currents. Body very elongated, rounded; extremely elongated jaws form a long beak, with numerous needle-like teeth; rear of the top jaw-bone by being exposed when the mouth is closed. It has no gill rakers, the fins without spines; low lobes at the front of the dorsal and anal fins. Its dorsal fin is composed of 14–17 rays, anal fins is composed of 16–20 rays, and pectorals 10–12. Atlantic needlefish are found from Maine to Brazil and have been known to venture into fresh water for short periods, water columns, estuary, and reef associated.

It is predatory and reaches up to 1.4 m (4.6 ft) in total length.
The Ameca shiner is a species of cyprinid fish in the family Cyprinidae. The Ameca shiner was described in 1986 from upper parts of the Ameca River drainage in Jalisco, Mexico. Although already feared extinct by 1969, and listed as such by the IUCN when rated in 1996, a tiny population was rediscovered in 2001. Some were brought into captivity to form the basis of a breeding program. These have been used for a reintroduction project since 2015.

Arapaimidae is a family of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Osteoglossidae. It includes the South American arapaimas of the Amazon and Essequibo basins and the African arowana from the watersheds of the Sahelo-Sudanese region, Senegal, Gambia, and parts of Eastern Africa. This family is sometimes treated as the subfamily Arapaiminae. A commonly used synonym is Heterotidinae, but according to the ICZN, Arapaimidae has priority.
The marbled sculpin is a species of sculpin found in the Klamath and Pit River drainages in northern California and southern Oregon. Three subspecies have been identified: the upper Klamath marbled sculpin, which occurs in the Klamath River watershed above Klamath Falls; the lower Klamath marbled sculpin, which occurs in the Klamath River watershed downstream of Iron Gate Dam; and the bigeye marbled sculpin, which inhabits the Pit River Watershed. However, genetic analysis performed in 2012 indicated minimal difference between individuals from each of these three regions.
The Altamaha shiner is a species of fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is endemic to the Piedmont region of Georgia, where it occurs in the upper areas of the Altamaha River drainage area, primarily above the fall line in north-central Georgia.

Haemulon squamipinna is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a grunt belonging to the family Haemulidae. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean where it is endemic to Brazil, here it is locally known as Xira Amarela, and occurs along the coast from the states of Ceará to Bahia. It grows to about 20 cm (7.9 in) in length, feeds at night on benthic invertebrates, and is important for subsistence fisheries along the northeastern Brazilian coast. It forms large schools that can number in the thousands, sometimes with Haemulon aurolineatum. Juveniles are often found in shallow reefs at depths of 2 to 5 m while adults are found in deeper areas at 5 to 30 m.
Erik Bertelsen was a Danish ichthyologist, who specialised in deep sea fish. The fish, Diaphus bertelseniNafpaktitis, 1966 is named in his honour.
