The United Left (Polish : Zjednoczona Lewica, ZL) was a political and electoral alliance of political parties in Poland.
The alliance was formed in July 2015 by the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), Your Movement (TR), Polish Socialist Party (PPS), Labour Union (UP), and The Greens (PZ) to jointly contest the forthcoming parliamentary election. [4] [5] [6] The formation of the alliance was in response to the poor performance the Polish centre-left in the 2015 presidential election, and was backed by the All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions (OPZZ). [7] On 14 September 2015 the Polish Labour Party (PPP) joined the alliance. [8] On 4 October 2015, it was announced that Barbara Nowacka, co-leader of TR, would be the alliance's leader and prime ministerial candidate. [9] [10]
In the 2015 parliamentary election on 25 October 2015, the ZL received 7.6% of the vote, [11] below the 8% electoral threshold for electoral alliances (individual parties only need 5%), [12] leaving the alliance without any parliamentary representation. ZL was dissolved in February 2016. [1] The alliance was succeeded for the 2019 parliamentary election by The Left.
The Democratic Left Alliance was a social-democratic political party in Poland. It was formed on 9 July 1991 as an electoral alliance of centre-left parties, and became a single party on 15 April 1999. It was the major coalition party in Poland between 1993 and 1997, and between 2001 and 2005, with four Prime ministers coming from the party: Józef Oleksy, Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Leszek Miller and Marek Belka. It then faded into opposition, overshadowed by the rise of Civic Platform and Law and Justice.

The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) retained its majority in the Sejm, but lost its majority in the Senate to the opposition. With 43.6% of the popular vote, Law and Justice received the highest vote share by any party since Poland returned to democracy in 1989. The turnout was the highest for a parliamentary election since the first free elections after the fall of communism in 1989. For the first time after 1989, the ruling party controls one house, and the opposition the other.
