Background

Bred by Stetchworth Park Stud Ltd. in Stetchworth, East Cambridgeshire, she was out of the mare Rostova and a descendant of the great Nearco through her sire, the 1985 Epsom Derby winner, Slip Anchor.

Racing career

1992: three-year-old season

Trained by Clive Brittain, User Friendly made her racing debut on 24 April 1992 in England with a win in the Forte Airport Service Fillies Maiden Stakes at Sandown Park Racecourse. She followed up with a win in the Lingfield Oaks Trial then on 6 June won the Group One Classic, The Oaks. On 11 July User Friendly won her second straight Group One event, taking the Irish Oaks at the Curragh. [1] On 19 August she won the Yorkshire Oaks at York Racecourse and then on 12 September at Doncaster Racecourse she made it four Group Ones in a row and her second English Classic win by defeating her male counterparts in the St. Leger Stakes. [2] On 4 October User Friendly was sent to Longchamp Racecourse in Paris for the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe where she finished second to Subotica. [3] In her last start of 1992, User Friendly was sent to Tokyo, Japan to compete in the Japan Cup in which she finished sixth to winner, Tokai Teio.

User Friendly's 1992 performances earned her two Cartier Racing Awards for, one for European Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and the other as the European Horse of the Year.

1993: four-year-old season

User Friendly made her first start at age four on 3 June 1993 at Epsom Downs, finishing fourth in the Coronation Cup. She returned to her winning form on 4 July with a victory in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud at Saint-Cloud Racecourse in France. On 24 July she ran fourth behind winner Opera House in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot Racecourse [4] and then was third as the returning champion in the Yorkshire Oaks. On 3 October User Friendly returned to Longchamp Racecourse in Paris for the 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. This time, she finished twenty-second in a field of twenty-three behind winner, Urban Sea.

1994: five-year-old season

In 1994, User Friendly's handlers decided to send her to compete in the United States. For trainer Rodney Rash, on 29 July she made her first start of the year winning a 1 1/16-mile Allowance race on grass at Del Mar Racetrack in California. [5] Her next race, and the last of her career, came on 29 August at Arlington Park in Chicago. In a field of eight fillies and mares, she ran last in the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes behind fellow European filly Hatoof.

Breeding record

Retired to broodmare duty, at the November 1995 Keeneland breeding stock sale, Kazuo Nakamura of Japan paid US$2.5 million for User Friendly who was already in foal to Mr. Prospector. [6] She was based in Kentucky where she produced three more foals [7] before being sold again at Keeneland's November 1999 breeding stock sale for US$1.7 million to David Nagel who brought her to stand at his Barronstown Stud in County Wexford, Ireland.

User Friendly produced eleven foals between 1996 and 2007 from the world's top sires such as Mr. Prospector, Danehill, Deputy Minister, Kingmambo, Sadler's Wells, Storm Cat, and Danehill Dancer. To date, her offspring have met with limited success in racing.

Time Charter was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won several major middle-distance races between 1982 and 1984. After winning twice as a two-year-old in 1981, she developed into a classic filly in the following year, finishing second in the 1000 Guineas before winning The Oaks in record time. Later that year she won the Sun Chariot Stakes before beating a field of colts and older horses by seven lengths in the Champion Stakes. As a four-year-old she won England's premier weight-for-age race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and successfully conceded seven pounds to the outstanding French filly All Along in the Prix Foy. She then recorded her most important success when winning the Classic 1000 Guineas two of her six races including an upset win in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. Virginia Waters failed to win her remaining six races, her best results coming when she finished fourth in The Oaks and second in the Matron Stakes. At the end of her three-year-old season she was retired from racing to become a broodmare.

Sleepytime is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In a racing career which lasted from September 1996 to April 1998 she ran six times and won two races. In two races as a two-year-old she won one race, and finished third in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot. On her three-year-old debut she was beaten in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury but then won the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse. On her only subsequent appearance that year she finished third in the Coronation Stakes. After one unsuccessful run in 1998 she was retired from racing to become a successful broodmare.

Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh and finishing second in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket. The following spring, the filly was beaten in her first two races before winning the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh. Imagine recorded her most valuable success on her final appearance, winning the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She never raced again, but proved to be a successful broodmare.

Unraced as a two-year-old, Intrepidity proved to be the outstanding three-year-old filly in Europe in 1993, winning the Prix Saint-Alary and the Prix Vermeille in France and The Oaks in England. She also finished fourth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, beaten one and a half lengths. At the end of the year she was voted European Champion Three-year-old Filly at the Cartier Racing Awards. Intrepidity was kept in training as a four-year-old, but failed to win, although she finished second in the Prix Ganay and the Prix Foy. She was then retired to stud where her record as a broodmare was disappointing.

Midway Lady was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won two British Classic Races in 1986. In a racing career lasting from August 1985 until June 1986, the filly ran six times and won her last five races. She sustained her only defeat when finishing second on her racecourse debut but won her remaining three races in 1985 including the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster and the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp. Her three-year-old campaign consisted of only two races, as she won the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Oaks at Epsom a month later. After sustaining a serious leg injury, she was retired to stud where she became a successful producer of winners including the Oaks winner Eswarah.

Magnificient Style is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She only raced as a three-year-old, winning two of her four races, including the Musidora Stakes. Since retiring from racing she has become a successful broodmare, with her progeny including Playful Act, Nathaniel and Great Heavens. She was trained by Henry Cecil and owned by Buckram Oak Holdings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hellenic (horse)</span> Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hellenic was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare bred by the Ballymacoll Stud. After finishing unplaced in her only start as a juvenile, she improved to become a top-class stayer in the summer and autumn of 1990. She won both the Ribblesdale Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks before finishing second when favourite for the St Leger and being the first filly home in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She later became an outstanding broodmare, producing Islington, and several other major winners. She was retired from breeding in 2010 and died a year later.

Lady Capulet was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Her brief track career consisted of only three races in May and June 1977. She won the Irish 1000 Guineas on her debut before finishing second in the Coronation Stakes and third in the Pretty Polly Stakes. She was retired from racing to become a broodmare and made a major impact as the dam of the leading stallion El Prado.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.
