Wabash Railroad No. 534, also known as Nancy, is the sole survivor of the B-7 class 0-6-0 switcher steam locomotive that was built by the American Locomotive Company in 1906. It was used by the Wabash as a yard switcher, until it was sold in 1954 to the Lake Erie and Fort Wayne Railroad as No. 1. After being retired in 1957, it was donated to Swinny Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana for static display. In 1984, it was purchased by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, which removed the locomotive from the park and relocated it to their locomotive shop in New Haven. The locomotive is undergoing restoration to operational condition while serving as an educational tool for the younger FWRHS members, as of 2023.
From the late 1880s to the early 1920s, the Wabash Railroad, a class 1 railroad that lied as far east as New York state and as far west as Iowa, ordered multiple classes of 0-6-0 switcher locomotives to add to their locomotive roster. [1] One of the classes was the B-7 class, with forty-two of them being built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the American Locomotive Company (ALCO)'s Rhode Island Locomotive Works between 1906 and 1912, being numbered 525-566, and No. 534 was one of the locomotives built by Alco in August 1906. [2] The locomotive was used by the Wabash for shuttling and simmering various rolling stock between several terminals throughout the states of Illinois and Missouri.
As the railroad was dieselizing their locomotive roster, many of the B-7 class 0-6-0s were either sold for scrap or sold to smaller short-line railroads, and No. 534 was sold in 1954 to one of the Wabash's subsidiaries, the Lake Erie and Fort Wayne Railroad (LE&FW) for $1,500, and it was subsequently renumbered to 1. The LE&FW reassigned the switcher to pull light-weight freight trains out of steel mills in Taylor Street near Fort Wayne, Indiana. By the late 1950s, however, the LE&FW discontinued steam operations, and No. 1 completed its last revenue freight assignment in March 1957 before its fire was dropped for the final time. [3]
A group of area railroaders convinced the LE&FW to donate No. 1 to Swinny Park in Fort Wayne for static display, since it was one of very few Wabash steam locomotives left at the time. On May 8, 1957, after being repainted, No. 1 was lifted onto a flatbed by a Nickel Plate Road 300-ton steam crane, and then it was moved by truck downtown to its new display site. [4] No. 1 would spend the next eighteen years on static display in Swinny Park in front of Wabash caboose No. 2543. In 1984, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS), a non-profit organization based in nearby New Haven, acquired No. 1 and the caboose as additions to their collection of vintage railroad equipment, and volunteers arrived in Swinny Park that same year to remove the locomotive and caboose from their display site by truck. Upon arrival of New Haven, No. 1 remained sidelined for a future restoration that would revert its identity to Wabash No. 534, but that would not come to fruition for years, [4] since the FWRHS would concentrate their efforts on Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765, and for a short time, Chesapeake and Ohio 2-8-4 No. 2716.
Beginning in 2009, No. 534 was moved inside the FWRHS's main engine house, and some of their youngest members began cosmetically stabilizing the locomotive for a cleaner appearance, and to get rid of the variety of rust spots the locomotive had been collecting while being stored outdoors over the years. The smokebox was full of rusty crumbs from the smokebox door’s insulation, and rodents and other small animals had to be evicted from inside the locomotive, so that the crew would proceed with the work. Progress was slow, but still productive, since by 2013, the locomotive's boiler received a much smoother surface. [5] As of 2023, work slowly continues to proceed with No. 534's restoration for operational purposes. The tender remains deteriorated without any trucks, the cab was completely refurbished and reinstalled onto the locomotive, and both the builder's plate and the original Wabash number plate were remade. [3] One of the reasons why this is a slow process is because No. 534 is meant to serve as an educational tool for the youngest members of the FWRHS, since most of them aren't legally of age to help work with No. 765. [6] The date of the locomotive ever steaming up again has yet to be determined. [6]
No. 534 is the sole survivor of the B-7 class, and it is one of only two preserved steam locomotives that were ever used by the Wabash. The only other survivor is 2-6-0 No. 573, which is homed at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis.
No. 534 is also one of the oldest preserved steam locomotives in the state of Indiana.
The Union Pacific Big Boy is a type of simple articulated 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad in revenue service until 1962.
The New York Central Railroad (NYC) called the 4-8-2 type of steam locomotive the Mohawk type. It was known as the Mountain type on other roads, but the New York Central did not see the name as fitting on its famous Water Level Route. Instead, it picked the name of one of those rivers its rails followed, the Mohawk River, to name its newest type of locomotive. Despite the more common name, the 4-8-2 was actually suited in many ways more to flatland running than slow mountain slogging, with its 4-wheel leading truck for stability at speed. However, the L1s and L2s were unstable at higher speeds due to the lack of effective cross-balancing, making the 4-wheel leading truck simply a better distributor of the locomotives weight; the L1s and L2s were consequently limited to 60 mph (97 km/h), though this issue was resolved for the L3s and L4s using data gathered from two experimental L-2s.
Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 4-8-4 represents the wheel arrangement of four leading wheels on two axles, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles and four trailing wheels on two axles. The type was first used by the Northern Pacific Railway, and initially named the Northern Pacific, but railfans and railroad employees have shortened the name since its introduction. It is most-commonly known as a Northern.
The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, commonly known as the "Frisco", was a railroad that operated in the Midwest and South Central United States from 1876 to April 17, 1980. At the end of 1970, it operated 4,547 miles (7,318 km) of road on 6,574 miles (10,580 km) of track, not including subsidiaries Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railway and the Alabama, Tennessee and Northern Railroad; that year, it reported 12,795 million ton-miles of revenue freight and no passengers. It was purchased and absorbed into the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1980. Despite its name, it never came close to San Francisco.
The ALCO RS-1 was a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Alco-GE between 1941 and 1953 and the American Locomotive Company from 1953 to 1960. ALCO subsidiary Montreal Locomotive Works built an additional three RS-1s in 1954. This model has the distinction of having the longest production run of any diesel locomotive for the North American market. The RS-1 was in production for 19 years from the first unit Rock Island #748 in March 1941 to the last unit National of Mexico #5663 in March 1960.

The USRA 0-6-0 was a USRA standard class of steam locomotive designed under the control of the United States Railroad Administration, the nationalized railroad system in the United States during World War I. This was the standard light switcher locomotive of the USRA types, and was of 0-6-0 wheel arrangement in the Whyte notation, or "C" in UIC classification.
Nickel Plate Road 765 is a class "S-2" 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, commonly referred to as the "Nickel Plate Road". In 1963, No. 765, renumbered as 767, was donated to the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where it sat on display at the Lawton Park, while the real No. 767 was scrapped in Chicago in 1964.
The ALCO FA was a family of B-B diesel locomotives designed to haul freight trains. The locomotives were built by a partnership of ALCO and General Electric in Schenectady, New York, between January 1946 and May 1959. Designed by General Electric's Ray Patten, they were of a cab unit design; both cab-equipped lead FA and cabless booster FB models were built. A dual passenger-freight version, the FPA/FPB, was also offered. It was equipped with a steam generator for heating passenger cars.

The Pere Marquette 1223 is a steam locomotive on permanent display in Grand Haven, Michigan. It is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type locomotives, along with sibling engine No. 1225, the inspiration for the locomotive in the book and movie versions of The Polar Express, which is in operating condition.

The Indiana Transportation Museum is a railroad museum that was formerly located in the Forest Park neighborhood of Noblesville, Indiana, United States. It owns a variety of preserved railroad equipment, some of which still operate today. ITM is currently Located in Logansport, Indiana.
The Belton, Grandview and Kansas City Railroad (SHRX) is short line passenger railroad and museum located in Belton, Missouri. It operates as a heritage railroad, on what was once the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway (Frisco), on the Kansas City to Springfield branch. With the merger of the Frisco with the Burlington Northern, the line was partially sold to the Kansas City Southern Railway north of 155th Street. The north of the line is used once a year when tree trimming/weed spraying takes place, and the tracks are bad though can still can be used. The bridge is still there past Markey Road but with missing ties, while the southernmost portion from Peculiar, MO. to Clinton, MO. has been scrapped and abandoned. This left the remaining trackage of a few miles connecting Grandview and Belton, Missouri. The railroad currently operates a 1952 GM GP 9 locomotive, which is used to pull an excursion train. Also included in the railroad's collection are various locomotives, cars and equipment.
The ALCO RS-3m is a diesel-electric locomotive rebuilt from an ALCO RS-3 road switcher. These 98 locomotives were rebuilt to replace their original ALCO prime mover with the more reliable EMD 567B engine and fan assemblies taken from retired E8s. Many of these rebuilds were performed by the ex NYC DeWitt shop with 56 completed at the ex PRR Juniata shop. The RS3m rebuild program started in 1972 and continued until 1978 under Conrail.
The Pennsylvania Railroad G5 is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives built by the PRR's Juniata Shops in the mid-late 1920s. It was designed for passenger trains, particularly on commuter lines, and became a fixture on suburban railroads until the mid-1950s. The G5 was the largest and most powerful 4-6-0 locomotive, except for a single Southern Pacific 4-6-0 that outweighed it by 5,500 lb.
The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS) is a non-profit group in New Haven, Indiana that is dedicated to the restoration and operation of the ex-Nickel Plate Railroad's steam locomotive no. 765 and other vintage railroad equipment. Since restoration, the 765 was added to the National Register of Historic Places as no. 96001010 on September 12, 1996 and has operated excursion trains across the Eastern United States. In 2012, the FWRHS's steam locomotive no. 765 was added to the Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam program.
Chesapeake and Ohio Railway 2716 is a class "K-4" 2-8-4 "Kanawha" (Berkshire) type steam locomotive built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O). While most railroads referred to these 2-8-4 type locomotives as Berkshires, the C&O referred to them as Kanawhas after the Kanawha River, which flows through West Virginia. Used as a dual service locomotive, No. 2716 and its classmates served the C&O in a variety of duties until being retired from revenue service in 1956.
The Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation (KSHCO) is a nonprofit organization based on the border between Irvine and Ravenna, Kentucky. The organization mainly focuses on the restoration of Chesapeake and Ohio K-4 2-8-4 steam locomotive No. 2716 along with other vintage railroad equipment. The organization has plans of turning the surrounding area into its own tourist attraction called the Kentucky Rail Heritage Center through a partnership with the R.J. Corman Railroad Group and CSX Transportation.
Copper Range Railroad No. 29 is the sole survivor of the C-2 class 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotives. Built by ALCO in 1907, No. 29 was primarily used to pull loaded copper trains out of copper mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as well as occasional passenger trains between Houghton and McKeever, until it was removed from service in 1953. In 1967, it was leased to the Keweenaw Central Railroad, who used it to pull excursion trains between Calumet and Lake Linden, until 1971. For thirty years, the locomotive was stored outside the abandoned Quincy Smelter plant in Hancock under the ownership of Mineral Range Inc.. In 2003, No. 29 was purchased by the Mid-Continent Railway Museum for static display purposes, and the locomotive's move to North Freedom, Wisconsin was funded and financed by the museum the following year. As of 2023, No. 29 remains on static display in front of two passenger cars on the museum's grounds, slowly undergoing a cosmetic stabilization.
