Wushu at the SEA Games

Wushu has been contested at the SEA Games since 1991 in Manila, Philippines, with the exceptions of the 1995 and 1999 editions. [1] [2] [3]

The 1991 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 16th Southeast Asian Games, was a multi-sport event held in Manila, the Philippines from 24 November to 5 December 1991, with 28 sports featured in the games. This was the second time that the country hosted the games and its first since 1981. It was officially opened by President Corazon Aquino at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila through a colorful opening ceremony. It was the only SEA Games at that time where the overall championship was heavily contested. The deciding medal came from the last sporting event - women's marathon where Indonesia got the gold medal.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is a governing body of sports in Asia, currently with 45 member National Olympic Committees. Talal Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah was elected as President of the OCA on 8 July 2023. However, on 30 July 2023, the International Olympic Committee asked Randhir Singh, who was the acting president at the time, to continue as the Acting President of the OCA while the IOC investigated the OCA presidential election of 2023. On 13 October 2023, the IOC ethics committee asked the OCA to annul its 2023 elections due to Talal’s candidacy not fulfilling the eligibility conditions defined by the OCA Constitution and election interference by his brother Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.

Wushu, or kung fu, is a competitive Chinese martial art. It integrates concepts and forms from various traditional and modern Chinese martial arts, including Shaolin kung fu, tai chi, and Wudangquan. "Wushu" is the Chinese term for "martial arts", reflecting the art's goal as a compilation and standardization of various styles. To distinguish it from Traditional Chinese Martial Arts, it is sometimes referred to as 'Modern Wushu'.

The 2022 Asian Games (2022年亚洲运动会), officially the 19th Asian Games (第十九届亚洲运动会) and also known as Hangzhou 2022 (杭州2022), were a continental multi-sport event which was held from 23 September to 8 October 2023 in Hangzhou, China. The games marked the 110th anniversary since the creation of the first continental event, starting with the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games.

Wushu was contested by both men and women at the 1994 Asian Games in Aki Ward Sports Center, Hiroshima, Japan from October 12 to October 14, 1994. It was competed in the disciplines of Taolu with six events, tai chi, Nanquan and Changquan for both genders. Changquan event consisted of Changquan, one long weapon discipline and one short weapon discipline.

Wushu was contested by both men and women at the 1990 Asian Games in Haidian Gymnasium, Beijing, China from September 29 to October 4, 1990. The wushu competition consisted of three events: Changquan, Nanquan and tai chi, for both genders. The changquan combined event consisted of changquan, one long weapon discipline, and one short weapon discipline. The competition attracted 96 competitors from 11 nations.

Jean Claude Saclag is a Filipino wushu and kickboxing practitioner. In wushu, he is a gold medalist in Sanda World Cup and a silver medalist in the 2014 Asian Games.

The 2025 SEA Games, officially called the 33rd SEA Games and commonly known as Thailand 2025, is an upcoming international multi-sport event sanctioned by the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF). The event is scheduled to take place from 9 to 20 December 2025 across the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, as well as the provinces of Chonburi and Songkhla, Thailand.

Wushu at the 1991 Southeast Asian Games was held at the in the Philippines from November 30 to December 2, 1991. This was the first time wushu at the SEA Games was contested, and the second time after wushu's appearance at the 1990 Asian Games that the sport was included in a multi-sport event.
