Primaries were held on May 15, 2018. The elections and primaries coincided with the elections and primaries of other federal and state offices.

On January 12, 2023, governor Jim Pillen appointed Republican former governor Pete Ricketts to fill the seat for the remainder of the 118th United States Congress. Ricketts has committed to running in the special election and for a full term in 2026. This marks the first time since 1954 and the second time since 1952 where both of Nebraska's U.S. Senate seats were concurrently for election. Primary elections will take place on May 14, 2024.
