United States special operations forces (SOF) are the active and reserve component forces of the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force, as designated by the Secretary of Defense and specifically organized, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special operations. All active and reserve special operations forces are assigned to the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).

The group was originally the 18th Air Support Communications Squadron and served in the Mediterranean and European Theaters of Operations during World War II as an air communications squadron.
The 710th Combat Operations Squadron is a reserve unit, stationed at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, where it has augmented the 610th Air Operations Center since its activation in March 2004. Its first predecessor was established in Alaska in 1952 as the 710th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron and provided air defense radar coverage until inactivating in 1983. The two squadrons were consolidated in June 2004.
