The 1989 Sudirman Cup was the first tournament of the World Mixed Team Badminton Championships, the Sudirman Cup. It was held from May 24 to May 29, 1989, in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.
In May 1988, the International Badminton Federation approved the inauguration of the world mixed team championships and announced that the championships would be inaugurated in Jakarta, Indonesia. [1]
28 teams around the world took part in this tournament. [2] Geographically, they were 13 from Europe, 10 teams from Asia, two from Americas, two from Oceania and one from Africa. India and Pakistan entered the competition but ultimately did not participate. [3] [4]
The draw was announced on April 1989, a month prior to the championships. [5]

Rudy Hartono Kurniawan is an Indonesian former badminton player holding the record of winning the men's singles title at the All-England Championship eight times, including seven times consecutively from 1968 to 1974. He won the World Championship in 1980 on his only attempt at this title.
