The 2002 season was the tenth season since the establishment of the J.League. The league began on March 2, 2002 and ended on November 30, 2002. The Suntory Championship was not held, because Júbilo Iwata was winner of both stages. At the end Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Consadole Sapporo were relegated to J2.
The J.League 1993 season was the inaugural season of the J.League Division 1. The league fixtures began on May 15, 1993, and ended on December 15, 1993. The first ever Suntory Championship took place in the following year, January 9 and January 16, 1994.
The 2001 season was the ninth season since the establishment of the J-League. The league began on March 10 and ended on November 24. At the end of the season the second stage winner Kashima Antlers won the Suntory Championship against Júbilo Iwata who won the first stage.

The 1993 season was Shimizu S-Pulse's second season in existence and their first season in the newly established J1 League. The club also competed in the Emperor's Cup and the J.League Cup. The team finished the season third in the league.
