The 2007 New South Wales storms started on 8 June 2007 following the development of an intense east coast low pressure system during the previous night. Over the next 36 hours,these areas were battered by the system's strong winds and torrential rain,which caused extensive flooding,damage,loss of life and the grounding of a 225 m (738 ft) long bulk carrier.
The New South Wales Premier,Morris Iemma,declared a natural disaster for the affected areas. [1] More than 105,000 homes had been left without power. [2] Rainfall had exceeded 300 mm (12 in) in the Hunter region and 200 mm (8 in) in parts of the Central Coast and Sydney. [3] Nearly 6,000 State Emergency Service volunteers,including crews from across New South Wales,Australian Capital Territory,Queensland and Victoria worked in the area,having responded to over 10,000 calls for assistance. The floods claimed the lives of eight people. [4]
The strongest observed wind gusts were 135 km/h (84 mph) at Norah Head and 124 km/h (77 mph) at Newcastle.
A family of four and a nephew were killed when a section of road collapsed under their car as they drove along the Pacific Highway at Somersby on the Central Coast. Two people died when their four-wheel drive vehicle was swept off a bridge by floodwaters at Clarence Town and a man died near Lambton when he was swept into a storm-water drain. The following day,a man died when a tree fell onto his vehicle at Brunkerville. Another man died during a house fire that,it is believed,was started by a candle being used during the blackouts caused by the storm. [5] [6] The total death toll rose to ten.
The unladen bulk carrier Pasha Bulker ran aground on Nobbys Beach at Newcastle,after its captain failed to heed a warning to move out to sea to escape the approaching storm. [7] The Newcastle Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service used both of their aircraft to winch the Pasha Bulker crew of 22 to safety,transporting them to Nobbys Beach car park. However,on completion of the rescue,the aircraft had to abandon the flight back to their Broadmeadow base due to lack of visibility and dangerously strong winds.
On the evening of Sunday 10 June,approximately 4,000 residents in riverside communities of central Maitland,South Maitland and Lorn were forced to evacuate their homes in anticipation that the Hunter River would breach its levee system. [8] Evacuation centres were set up at East Maitland and Maitland High School. However,by the morning of 11 June,the floodwater had peaked without breaking the levee bank. [9]

Ian Michael Macdonald is a former Australian politician and currently undergoing court proceedings and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1988 to 2010 representing the Labor Party. Between 2003 and 2010,Macdonald held a range of ministerial responsibilities in the Carr,Iemma,Rees,and Keneally ministries. Macdonald,who joined the Labor Party in 1972,had his membership of the party terminated in 2013 for bringing the party into disrepute.
Raymond Terrace,locally known as "The Terrace”,is a town in the Hunter Region of New South Wales,Australia,about 26 km (16 mi) by road north of Newcastle on the Pacific Highway. Established in 1837 it is situated at the confluence of the Hunter and Williams rivers. The town was named after Lieutenant Raymond,who had explored the Hunter River in 1797 and described the terraced appearance of trees in the area. Governor Lachlan Macquarie camped in the area in 1818,using "Raymond's Terrace" as the name for the place where his party had camped.
MV Sygna was a Norwegian bulk carrier built by Austin &Pickersgill for J. Ludwig Mowinckels Rederi in 1967. It ran aground on Stockton Beach in Australia during a major storm in 1974. After its bow section was refloated,its stern remained beached and became an icon and landmark for the local area,until the visible remains of the wreck collapsed into the sea in 2016.
The Newcastle railway line is a branch railway line in the city of Newcastle,New South Wales,Australia. The line branches off the Main North line at Broadmeadow and travels in an easterly direction through the inner suburbs to Newcastle Interchange,with one intermediate station at Hamilton. Until its curtailment in December 2014,it extended to Newcastle station. NSW TrainLink operates electric passenger train services over this line as part of its Central Coast &Newcastle Line service,and diesel railcars to Maitland and beyond as part of the Hunter Line.
The SS Cawarra was a paddle-steamer that sank on 12 July 1866 in Newcastle harbour,New South Wales,Australia sending sixty people to their deaths. The sinking was one of the worst maritime disasters in Australian history.
Pasha Bulker,later known as MV Drake and now MV Anthea,is a Panamax bulk carrier of 76,741 tonnes deadweight (DWT) operated by the Lauritzen Bulkers shipping company and owned by Japanese Disponent Owners. While waiting in the open ocean outside Newcastle harbour to load coal,Pasha Bulker ran aground during a major storm on 8 June 2007 on Nobbys Beach,New South Wales,Australia. It was refloated and moved to a safe location offshore on 2 July 2007 before being towed to Japan for major repairs on 26 July 2007.

In 2009,archaeologist uncovered over 5,534 Aboriginal artefacts,representing three occupation periods. In the 1820s,the Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld worked with local Awabakal man Biraban to record the Awabakal language. Since 1892,the Indigenous people of Newcastle have come to be known as the Awabakal.

Flooding in New South Wales has predominately been caused by excessive flows into rivers located in New South Wales and,to a lesser extent,excessive flows into rivers located in Queensland and Victoria. Floods can devastate local communities and impact the entire local economy.
Australian east coast lows are extratropical cyclones or low-pressure systems on the coast of southeastern Australia that may be caused by both mid-latitude and tropical influences over a variety of levels in the atmosphere. These storms should not be confused with Australian region tropical cyclones which typically affect the northern half of the continent.
Extreme rainfall on the east coast of Australia beginning on 18 March 2021 led to widespread flooding in New South Wales,affecting regions from the North Coast to the Sydney metropolitan area in the south. Suburbs of Sydney experienced the worst flooding in 60 years,and the events were described by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian as "one in 100-year" flooding. Far-southeast communities in Queensland were also affected by flooding and heavy rainfall,though to a lesser extent than those in New South Wales.
The 2022 eastern Australia floods were one of the nation's worst recorded flood disasters with a series of floods that occurred from late February to early May in South East Queensland,the Wide Bay–Burnett and parts of coastal New South Wales. Brisbane suffered major flooding,along with the cities of Maryborough,Gympie,the Sunshine Coast,Caboolture,Toowoomba,Gatton,Ipswich,Logan City,the Gold Coast,Murwillumbah,Mullumbimby,Grafton,Byron Bay,Ballina,Lismore,the Central Coast and parts of Sydney.
Heavy flooding broke out in the Central Coast and Sydney areas of New South Wales,Australia,beginning in early July 2022. Around 85,000 people were displaced by the flooding or requested to leave their homes by authorities. The floods' damage was significant because rain fell on land that was already saturated after months of previous heavy rainfall. It was the third major flood in 2022 for some areas in the eastern seaboard.
