The Sports Network (TSN) is a Canadian English language sports specialty channel. Established by the Labatt Brewing Company in 1984 as part of the first group of Canadian specialty cable channels, since 2001, TSN has been majority-owned by communications conglomerate BCE Inc. with a minority stake held by ESPN Inc. via a 20% share in the Bell Media subsidiary CTV Specialty Television. TSN is the largest specialty channel in Canada in terms of gross revenue, with a total of $400.4 million in revenue in 2013.

The 2008 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling tournament was held February 16–24, 2008 at the Brandt Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan. The winner was the 2005 champion team from Manitoba, under skip Jennifer Jones. In winning, they became the first team since Kelley Law's rink from B.C. in 2000 to win the championship after playing a tie-breaker game.
Dawn Kathleen McEwen is a Canadian curler from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She currently plays lead for the Jennifer Jones rink, who became Olympic champions, winning gold for Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics. McEwen is a two-time world champion in curling having won with Jones at the 2008 World Championships and again at the 2018 World Championships. In 2019, McEwen was named the greatest Canadian female lead in history in a TSN poll of broadcasters, reporters and top curlers.
Linda Moore is a Canadian world champion curler. From 1989 until 2014, she was a member of the TSN curling coverage team along with Vic Rauter and formerly Ray Turnbull.
Rachel Catherine Homan is a Canadian international curler. Homan is a former Canadian junior champion, a three-time Canadian national champion, and the 2017 world champion, all as a skip. She was also the skip of the Canadian women's curling team at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

This Tournament of Hearts marked the second time that Red Deer has hosted the Scotties; the first time that the Scotties was hosted in Red Deer was in 2004.

It marked the 12th time that Canada has hosted the World Women's Curling Championship. Victoria previously hosted the championships in 2005. The event was also a qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympics, awarding points to countries based on performance at this tournament.

The 2018 World Women's Curling Championship was held from March 17–25 at the North Bay Memorial Gardens in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. The format of the tournament was changed this year, with 13 teams qualifying for the tournament, and the top 6 teams from round-robin play will qualify for the playoffs. The playoff system were single-knockout, where the top two teams received a bye while the remaining four played the first round.
The 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling championship, was held from February 16 to 24 at the Centre 200 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The winning team represented Canada at the 2019 World Women's Curling Championship held from March 16 to 24 at the Silkeborg Sportscenter in Silkeborg, Denmark. The final game featured the largest comeback in Scotties Finals history. Alberta's Chelsea Carey came back from a 1–5 deficit, winning the championship 8–6 thanks to 5 total steal points in the second half, and two dramatic misses by Ontario's Rachel Homan.
The 2020 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling championship, was held from February 15 to 23 at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The winning team was scheduled to represent Canada at the 2020 World Women's Curling Championship at the CN Centre in Prince George, British Columbia.
