The 2017 New York Jets season was the franchise's 48th season in the National Football League, the 58th overall and the third under head coach Todd Bowles.

Contents

After losing their first two games, the first such start to a season since 2007, the Jets had an impressive three-game winning streak to improve to 3–2. However, the Jets collapsed and ended up winning only two games after Week 5. They equaled their record from the previous season, missed the playoffs for a seventh consecutive season, and were the solitary AFC team to not have one player make the Pro Bowl. It was the first time the Jets had won seven or fewer games in consecutive seasons since their 4–28 two-season streak of 1995 and 1996.

The 2010 New York Jets season was the franchise's 51st season overall, the team's 41st season in the National Football League (NFL) and their first season at New Meadowlands Stadium. The team improved on their 9–7 record from 2009 and reached the playoffs again. The Jets were the subject of HBO's training camp series Hard Knocks. The Jets played their first pre-season game home against the New York Giants to open up Meadowlands Stadium. Many considered them AFC East favorites; head coach Rex Ryan went so far as to guarantee a Super Bowl victory. Jets broke a team record with a franchise best 6 consecutive wins on the road with a win against the Lions, followed by a win against the Browns in week 10. In the same victory against the Browns, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to win back-to-back road games in overtime. The Jets were the last NFL team to be undefeated on the road, before suffering a 45–3 loss at the New England Patriots in Week 13. The Jets met the Patriots again five weeks later in the AFC Divisional Round back in Foxborough where New York upset New England 28–21. The following week, the Jets lost 24–19 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship, ending their hopes of returning to the Super Bowl for the first time in 42 seasons and ending what would have been a Cinderella Run.

The 2013 New York Jets season was the franchise's 44th season in the National Football League (NFL) and the 54th overall. The Jets improved their 6–10 regular season record from 2012 and attempted to make history as the first host team to play the Super Bowl on their own home turf, alongside the New York Giants, with whom they share the same home field, MetLife Stadium. However, they missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season. The Jets alternated between wins and losses during the first 9 weeks, then lost 3 straight, then won 3 of their last 4 games to finish 8–8.

The 2014 New York Jets season was the franchise's 45th season in the National Football League (NFL) and the 55th overall. The Jets failed to improve on their 8–8 regular season record in 2013. They were eliminated from postseason contention for the fourth consecutive season after a Week 12 loss to the Buffalo Bills. As a result, head coach Rex Ryan was fired on December 29, 2014, after compiling a 46–50 record in six seasons.

The 2015 New York Jets season was the franchise's 46th season in the National Football League and the 56th overall. The team improved on their 4–12 record in 2014 under former head Coach Rex Ryan. Under new head coach Todd Bowles, they succeeded in matching their previous season’s win count in just five games, starting 4–1. Prior to the season, the Jets made a number of moves, including, re-acquiring Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, two cornerbacks who were instrumental in the Jets previous defensive success, and obtaining Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall in trades. The team regressed to 5–5, before going on a five-game winning streak, clinching their first winning season since 2010. However, it wasn't enough to make the playoffs, as they lost to the Buffalo Bills in Week 17 and the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers, who also finished 10–6, clinched the final AFC playoff spot over the Jets based on a better record vs. common opponents. The Jets finished the season as the league's only team with a winning record to not make the playoffs, and as of 2023, this was the last Jets team to post a winning record. This was also tied with the 2020 Miami Dolphins season as the closest quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick came to making the playoffs in his 17-year career.

However, it did not happen because of injuries to key defensive players and poor offensive performances. After the Atlanta Falcons' Week 17 win over the Carolina Panthers, they were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2011. They also failed to achieve a 10-win season for the first time since that same season. This was Russell Wilson's first season not making the playoffs.

The Giants entered the season looking to improve on their 2017 campaign, which saw the team finish with a 3–13 record, their worst since the adoption of a 16-game regular season. Despite starting 1–7 for the second consecutive year, the Giants managed to improve on their 3–13 campaign with a 30–27 win over the Chicago Bears. After a 17–0 shutout loss to the Titans in Week 15, the Giants missed the playoffs for the second straight season. The season was highlighted by blown fourth-quarter leads much like 2015, the Giants were in 12 one-possession games and lost eight games by seven points or fewer.
