The 2018 Invictus Games was an adaptive mulit-sport event for wounded, injured and ill veteran and active defence personnel, held in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The fourth Invictus Games, an event founded in 2014 by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, included 13 sports (11 medal sports). It was the first Invictus Games held in the southern hemisphere. [1]
The events were staged on and around Sydney Harbour and at Sydney Olympic Park, in venues used for the 2000 Summer Olympics. [2] [3]
Jaguar Land Rover was the Presenting Partner for 2018 Sydney Invictus Games, as it had been for the Invictus Games since its inception in London in 2014. Premier Partners were Fisher House Foundation, Medibank, Sage Group, UNSW Canberra and Westpac. Aon, Boeing, Defence Housing Australia, Fidelity, Hyatt Regency Sydney, icare, ISPS Handa, Leidos, Lockheed Martin, Minter Ellison, Raytheon, Royal Australian Mint, SAAB Australia, Ticketek, Unisys and Workwear Group were Official supporters. The event Official suppliers were Amazon, Accor, CSM Live, George P. Johnson, Gold Medal Systems, Goodman, Great Big Events, Harvey Norman, Isentia, Norwest, Ottobock, Pages and Technical Direction Company. The Packer Family Foundation was a Philanthropic Supporter. [5] Founding Partners were the Australian Defence Force, Deloitte, Legacy NSW, Clubs NSW and RSL NSW. The Australian government donated $10,000 to the Games to mark the occasion of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. [6]
All 17 countries from the 2017 Games were invited to attend, with Poland joining for the first time, for a total of 18 countries. [7] [8]
Another team titled "Unconquered" also participated in certain events consisting of competitors from multiple nations. [9]

There were 12 adaptive sports contested at the Games (with golf and wheelchair tennis as non-medal sports) as well as the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge. [10]
Wheelchair rugby was held at the Quaycentre over a two-day period from 24 to 25 October. [11] Men and women competed in mixed teams. Competitors from 6 nations competed in wheelchair rugby at the 2018 Invictus Games.
Sitting volleyball was held at the Quaycentre over a two-day period from 22 to 23 October. [12] One event took place, which was jointly staged at the Genea Netball Centre and Quaycentre. Teams from 12 nations competed in this event.
There is no competitive medal tally at the Invictus Games. Medals are awarded, but Invictus Games does not endorse or maintain an official scoreboard of gold, silver and bronze medals.[ citation needed ]
Competitors, not athletes, participate in the event that supports rehabilitation and recovery for wounded, injured and ill defence personnel and veterans.[ citation needed ]

The 2000 Summer Paralympic Games or the XI Summer Paralympics were held in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, between 18 and 29 October. The Sydney Paralympics was last time that the Summer Paralympics were organized by two different Organizing Committees. In this edition, a record 3,801 athletes from 120 National Paralympic Committees participated in 551 events in 18 sports, and until the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, it was the second largest sporting event ever until that date held in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. Sydney was the eighth city to host the Olympics and the Paralympics on same venues at the same year, and the first since Barcelona 1992 that they were organized in complete conjunction with the Olympics. They were also the first Paralympic Games outside the Northern Hemisphere and also in Oceania.
The 2004 Summer Paralympics, the 12th Summer Paralympic Games, were a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee, held in Athens, Greece from 17 to 28 September 2004. 3,808 athletes from 136 countries participated. During these games 304 World Records were broken with 448 Paralympic Games Records being broken across 19 different sports. 8,863 volunteers worked along the Organizing Committee.

The Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre is a tennis and multi-purpose sports facility in the Sydney Olympic Park suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The centre was built in 1999 and hosted the tennis events for the 2000 Summer Olympics. The venue hosted the Sydney International tournament from 2000 to 2019, the Sydney Tennis Classic in 2022, the ATP Cup in 2020 and 2022, and the United Cup since 2023. The main stadium in the centre is the Ken Rosewall Arena, which has a seating capacity of 10,500, and is capable of hosting multiple sports, including tennis and netball.
Australia was the host nation for the 2000 Summer Paralympics which was held in Sydney. Australia competed in the games between 18 and 29 October. The team consisted of 285 athletes in 18 sports with 148 officials. It was the country's largest ever Paralympic delegation to a Games. Australia has participated at every Summer Paralympic Games since its inception. Australia finished at the top of the medal tally with 63 gold, 39 silver and 47 bronze medals to total 149 medals for the games. This was the first time and the only time to date that Australia has finished on top of either an Olympic or Paralympic medal tally.

The Invictus Games is an international multi-sport event first held in 2014, for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans. The word 'Invictus' is Latin for 'unconquered', chosen as an embodiment of the fighting spirit of the wounded, injured and sick service personnel and what they can achieve, post-injury.
The first 2014 Invictus Games were held on 10–14 September 2014. Around 300 competitors from 13 countries which have fought alongside the United Kingdom in recent military campaigns participated. These included the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and Afghanistan. Competitive events were held at many of the venues used during the 2012 Olympics, including the Copper Box and the Lee Valley Athletics Centre. The Games were broadcast by the BBC.

Netball New South Wales Waratahs is an Australian netball team that represents Netball New South Wales in the Australian Netball League. In 2008 they were founder members of the ANL. They were ANL champions in 2011 and have been grand finalists on a further five occasions, making them the second most successful team in the ANL after Victorian Fury. Waratahs are effectively the reserve team of New South Wales Swifts.
Netball Central is an Australian netball venue located in Sydney Olympic Park, New South Wales. Between 2016 and 2018, due to a naming rights arrangement, it was known as the Genea Netball Centre. The venue is owned by Netball New South Wales. It serves as their headquarters and as the main training base for New South Wales Swifts and Giants Netball. It was a host venue for the 2015 Netball World Cup and the 2018 Invictus Games. As well as netball, Netball Central regularly hosts martial arts, volleyball, table tennis, badminton and basketball tournaments and competitions.
The 2020 Invictus Games was an adaptive multi-sport event for wounded, injured and ill veteran and active defence personnel, that took place in The Hague, Netherlands in April 2022, after having been postponed twice. It was the fifth edition of the Invictus Games.
