The 2018 San Diego State Aztecs baseball team represented San Diego State University in the 2018 NCAA Division I baseball season as a member of the Mountain West Conference. The team was coached by Mark Martinez and played their home games at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Previous season

The Aztecs finished 42–21 overall, and 20–10 in the conference. During the season, the Aztecs were invited and participated in the Tony Gwynn Classic in San Diego, California. San Diego State defeated Notre Dame to earn 5th place. In the postseason, San Diego State defeated New Mexico in the semifinals and Fresno State twice in the quarterfinals and championship to earn 1st place in the 2017 Mountain West Conference baseball tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Aztecs were invited and participated in the 2017 NCAA Division I baseball tournament, where they defeated UCLA but lost to Long Beach State twice in the Long Beach Regional in Long Beach, California.

The left-handed hitting Gwynn won eight batting titles in his career, tied for the most in National League (NL) history. He is one of the best and most consistent hitters in baseball history. Gwynn had a .338 career batting average, never hitting below .309 in any full season. He was a 15-time All-Star, recognized for his skills both on offense and defense with seven Silver Slugger Awards and five Gold Glove Awards. Gwynn was the rare player in his era that stayed with a single team his entire career, and he played in the only two World Series appearances in San Diego's franchise history. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, his first year of eligibility.

James Clyde Dietz was an American former baseball player and coach. He served as the head baseball coach at San Diego State University from 1972 to 2002, compiling a record of 1,230–751–18. After coaching the freshman basketball team and the junior varsity baseball team at the University of Oregon, Dietz was appointed as the head basketball coach at Lewis–Clark Normal School—now Lewis–Clark State College—in May 1971, but turned down that offer a week later to take the head baseball coaching position at San Diego State.

Sixth seeded New Mexico won their first Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship with a championship game score of 4–2 and earned the conference's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division I baseball tournament.

Eric Matthew Valenzuela in an American baseball coach and former pitcher, who is the current head baseball coach of the Saint Mary’s. He played college baseball at Arizona State in 1997 before transferring to Pepperdine where he played from 1999 to 2001. He then served as the head coach of the Saint Mary’s (2014–2019).

The 2017–18 San Diego State men's basketball team represented San Diego State University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Aztecs, led by first-year head coach Brian Dutcher, played their home games at Viejas Arena as members in the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 22–11, 11–7 in Mountain West play to finish in a tie for fourth place. They defeated Fresno State, Nevada, and New Mexico to become champions of the Mountain West tournament. As a result, they received the Mountain West's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As the No. 11 seed in the West region, they lost to Houston in the first round.

The 2018 Mountain West Conference men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Mountain West Conference. It was held from March 7–10, 2018 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada. San Diego State defeated New Mexico in the championship game to win the tournament receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jordan Schakel</span> American basketball player (born 1998)

Jordan Schakel is an American professional basketball player for the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the San Diego State Aztecs. Throughout his college career, Schakel scored 225 field goals from behind the 3-point line, ranking third in SDSU's history, and ended his college career with a total 1,034 points. He averaged 42.7 percent from behind the three-point line and 46.11 percent during his final year, ranking third nationally in the 2020–21 season. Schakel graduated with a degree in marketing from the SDSU Fowler College of Business and was named a Scholar Athlete in each semester.
