Javed Akhtar is an Indian political activist, poet, lyricist and screenwriter. He is originally from the Gwalior area. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri (1999), Padma Bhushan (2007), the Sahitya Akademi Award as well as five National Film Awards. In the early part of his career, he was a screenplay writer, creating films such as Deewar, Zanjeer and Sholay. Later, he left screenplay-writing and became a lyricist and social-political activist. He also remained a member of Rajya Sabha. In 2020, he received the Richard Dawkins Award for his contribution to secularism, free thinking, for critical thinking, holding religious dogma up to scrutiny, advancing human progress and humanist values. Javed Akhtar was chosen as a recipient for the Richard Dawkins Award for being "the bright light for reason, freethought, and atheism in a dark time".

There were many performances, including those by Shreya Ghoshal, Ayushmann Khurrana, Javed Ali, Harshdeep Kaur and Neha Bhasin. A musical tribute was given to A. R. Rahman for completing his 25 years in the Indian cinema. Jab Harry Met Sejal won a leading five awards including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for "Hawayein". The show was broadcast on 18 March 2018 on Zee TV.

The ceremony was held on 18 February 2017 at the Dome @ National Sports Club of India, Mumbai and was hosted by Sonu Nigam. There were many performances, including those by Amit Trivedi, Papon, Badshah, Armaan Malik, Sukhwinder Singh, Jubin Nautiyal, Shalmali Kholgade, Neeti Mohan, Neha Bhasin. It was the first time that the ceremony was open to the public. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil won a leading five awards including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for "Channa Mereya". The show was broadcast on 19 March 2017 on Zee TV.

Song of the Year went to "Gerua" from Dilwale. The show was broadcast on 13 March 2016 on Zee TV.

The ceremony was held on 26 February 2015 at the Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai and was hosted by Aditya Narayan and Karishma Tanna. There were many performances, including those by Palak Muchhal, Usha Uthup, Benny Dayal, Shankar Mahadevan and Shruti Pathak. CityLights won a leading three awards. 2 States was awarded the Album of the Year, while "Zehnaseeb" from Hasee Toh Phasee won Song of the Year award. The show was broadcast on 22 March 2015 on Zee TV.
The Mirchi Music Award for Upcoming Music Composer of The Year is given yearly by Radio Mirchi as a part of its annual Mirchi Music Awards for Hindi films, to recognise an upcoming music director who has delivered an outstanding performance in a film song. The award ceremony was started in 2008 to honour the best of Hindi film music. Dhruv Ghanekar was the winner in that award ceremony for the film Drona. As of the 2018 ceremony, Niladri Kumar is the most recent winner in this category for the song "Aahista" from the film Laila Majnu.

The ceremony was held on 21 March 2012 at the Bhavan’s College Ground (Andheri), Mumbai and was hosted by Shaan and Usha Uthup. There were many performances, including those by Saif Ali Khan, Parikrama, Shreya Ghoshal, Bappi Lahiri and Mika Singh. There was a live jugalbandi featuring Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Lalit Pandit, Salim–Sulaiman, Ram Sampath, Sajid–Wajid and Leslie Lewis. Ash King, Harshdeep Kaur, Neha Bhasin, Anushka Manchanda, Tochi Raina, Shweta Pandit, Dominique and Clinton Cerejo, Kamal Khan, Suman Shridhar, Shefali Alvares, Benny Dayal and Ritu Pathak also performed during the award show. Rockstar won a leading five awards including Album of the Year. Song of the Year went to "Senorita" from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The show was broadcast on 31 March 2012 on Colors.

As of the 2018 ceremony, Prateek Kuhad is the most recent winner in this category for the song "Kadam" from the film Karwaan.
The 3rd Mirchi Music Awards, presented by Radio Mirchi, honored the best of Hindi music from the year 2010. The ceremony was held on 27 January 2011 at the Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, and was hosted by Shaan and Sonu Nigam. The program featured many performances, including those by Bappi Lahiri, Usha Uthup, DJ Lloyd, Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Rishi Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Several award categories were introduced for the first time, including Best Indipop Song, Best Item Number, Best Raag Inspired Song, Best song in Sufi Tradition, and Best Album of Golden Era. Dabangg won a leading eight awards including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for "Munni Badnaam".
The 11th Mirchi Music Awards, presented by Indian FM radio station Radio Mirchi, honoured the best music professionals of Hindi language Indian films of 2018. The ceremony was held at the Dome at the National Sports Club of India, Mumbai on 16 February 2019 and was hosted by Indian singer and actor Sonu Nigam. The event included live music performances by Badshah, Neha Kakkar, Meet Bros, Jonita Gandhi, Arko, Papon, Shivam Pathak, and Ashmik Patil, the winner of the Smule Mirchi Cover Star. A new award category, "Recreated Song of the Year," was introduced to recognize the many ‘re-creations’ released in 2018. Padmaavat won several awards including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for "Ghoomar." The show was broadcast on 17 March 2019 on Zee TV.

There were many performances, including those by KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rekha Bhardwaj, Himesh Reshammiya, Usha Uthup, Shahid Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. A non-film category award was included for the first time. Delhi-6 won a leading eight awards including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for "Masakali". The show was broadcast on 21 February 2010 on Sony TV.

There were many performances, including those by Dominique Cerejo, Benny Dayal, Manohari Singh, Bipasha Basu, Shreya Ghoshal, Genelia D'Souza, Kunal Ganjawala, Shahid Kapoor and Prachi Shah, the winner of the Tata Indicom Talent Hunt. Awards were given out in 17 different categories. Jodhaa Akbar won a leading seven awards including Song of the Year. Album of the Year was won by film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. The show was broadcast on 12 April 2009 on StarPlus.
