Acanthomintha ilicifolia, known by the common name San Diego thornmint, is a rare species of flowering plant in the mint family. It is native to Baja California and San Diego County, California, where it is a resident of the chaparral and coastal sage scrub plant communities and vernal pools. [2]
Acanthomintha ilicifolia has been extirpated from many of the sites where it was previously noted in San Diego County. It is a federally listed threatened species in the United States under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA). This species is also listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act which means that killing or possessing the plants is prohibited within California unless authorized by the California Department of Fish and Game. Acanthomintha ilicifolia is a petite annual herb growing up to about 15 centimeters (5.9 in.) in maximum height. [3] It has rounded to oval serrated leaves up to 1.5 (0.59 in.) centimeters long. The inflorescence is a cluster of flowers with oval-shaped bracts nearly a centimeter long which are edged with long spines. Each flower is about a centimeter wide and white, often tinted purple to pink, with a hooded upper lip and a slightly longer lower lip. The flowers of the San Diego thornmint distinguish it from the other members of its genus by the hairless anthers and style. [4]
The San Diego thornmint is an annual plant that germinates in late winter, flowers in April–May, and sets its seeds in June–July. [5] Each flower can produce a maximum of 4 seeds, with each plant producing between 70–200 seeds. [6] The species has been shown to have a seed bank. [4] Seed age is associated with germination, with higher rates of germination recorded among older seeds. [4]
While relatively little is known about the pollination of the San Diego thornmint, it is believed to be pollinated by bees and checkered beetles. Two other members of the Acanthomintha genus, the San Mateo thornmint (Acanthomintha duttonii) and heartleaf thornmint (A. obovata ssp. cordata), are known to self-pollinate, and there is evidence of this for the San Diego thornmint as well. The San Diego thornmint is found in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and grassland habitats. It grows in gabbro and calcareous clay soils, usually on gentle slopes between 15-20 degrees. [3] [5]
This species is generally limited to San Diego County, California, and select areas of Baja California, Mexico. The distribution is higher in the United States, with over 80 historical occurrences listed in 2009 versus 13 occurrences in Mexico. [2] [5]
As of 1998, the population of the San Diego thornmint is estimated to be between 150,000 and 170,000. Most occurrences have between 100-10,000 plants, with the largest occurrence boasting 60,000 in 1993. When the species was listed under the ESA in 1998, there were an estimated 52 known occurrences of the plant in the United States and 9 in Mexico, and 32 known extant occurrences. At the time of the 2009 5-year review, estimates identified around 80 known occurrences with approximately 55 extant occurrences. [2]
Seed dispersal for the San Diego thornmint is limited, so the range of the species has remained largely the same. Although more occurrences of the plant have been found since it was listed under the ESA, it is likely that they existed before. [2]
Major threats toward the San Diego thornmint fall into five categories: [2]
This is the most significant factor affecting the species. Older threats that have since lessened in significance include mining operations that alter soil state. Newer threats include destruction by fire and invasive species. Some of the most common invasive species in the habitat are Avena spp., Brachypodium distachyon , Brassica nigra , Centaurea melitensis , Cynara cardunculus , and Foeniculum vulgare . Other examples of habitat modification for the species include general urbanization, grazing, dumping, and off-road vehicle usage.
At the time that the species was listed as threatened, there were concerns that over-collection was a key detrimental factor. This includes legal and illegal collection for scientific or vandalistic reasons. However, this factor has become less critical in the species’ survival.
Two largest predators are rabbits and snails that have possibly eliminated a few occurrences of thornmint. Generally, predation is not the top concern among conservationists.
The Endangered Species Act of 1973 is the primary legislation that protects the thornmint species. Regional efforts from the city of San Diego and the surrounding county provide species regulation as well. However, many of these regional efforts are based around the official ESA listing. These local regulations are ineffective without federal guidelines. Along with this, occurrences of the species are not protected under Mexican legislation, exposing many occurrences to danger.
Many occurrences of the thornmint are found in small population sizes, which may make them vulnerable to changes. Other factors include animal grazing and climate change.
The San Diego thornmint was listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act in January 1982. It was federally listed as threatened under the ESA on October 13, 1998. [2]
5-year reviews have been initiated in 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2021. Only one 5-year review has been published in 2009. The review compiled scientific data concerning the thornmint’s conservation status and recommended cooperation between state and landowners to continue effective conservation. The review also recommends a status change to level “8”, having moderate threats with a high likelihood of recovery. The overall degree of severity was reduced and may be the reason why further 5-year plans have not been published. [2]
The 5-year review found that only 2 occurrences of the San Diego thornmint have gone extinct since its listing under the ESA in 1998. In addition, 39 of the estimated 55 extant occurrences are protected in conserved areas, compared to 7 at the time of listing. The review points to working with private landowners to conserve the remaining 16 occurrences as an important step in conservation of the species. [2]
There is not currently a formal species status assessment or recovery plan for the San Diego thornmint. In 2008, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designated 641 acres of both private and state/federal land in San Diego County as “Critical Habitat” for the San Diego thornmint. [8]
Recent efforts to conserve the San Diego thornmint, such as the San Diego Thornmint Expansion Project, [9] focus on reducing the impact of invasive species, habitat loss, and climate change. Studies on the pollination [7] and gene flow [6] of this species are also important for conservation and expansion of the plant into new areas.
The Santa Cruz cypress is a species of North American tree within the cypress family. The species is endemic to the Santa Cruz Mountains within the Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties of west-central California. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the species on the Endangered Species Act in 1987 due to increasing threats from habitat loss and disruption of natural forest fire regimes. In 2016, the conservation status of the Santa Cruz cypress changed to Threatened. The cited reasoning was a decrease in threats against their habitat.
Platanthera yadonii, also known as Yadon's piperia or Yadon's rein orchid, is an endangered orchid endemic to a narrow range of coastal habitat in northern Monterey County, California. In 1998 this plant was designated as an endangered species by the United States government, the major threat to its survival being continuing land development from an expanding human population and associated habitat loss. One of the habitats of Yadon's piperia, the Del Monte Forest near Monterey, California, is the subject of a federal lawsuit, based upon endangerment of this organism along with several other endangered species.

There are four species within this genus, including the endangered species Acanthomintha duttonii. All four thornmints are native to the California Floristic Province. The origin of the genus name is from the identical Greek word meaning thornmint.
Acanthomintha duttonii is a species of annual plant endemic to San Mateo County, California in the family Lamiaceae. It is commonly called San Mateo thornmint and is found growing on serpentine soils near the Crystal Springs Reservoir in a six-mile (10 km) long strip on the east side of Montara Mountain at elevations of approximately 150 to 300 meters.
Lasthenia conjugens, commonly known as Contra Costa goldfields, is an endangered species of wildflower endemic to a limited range within the San Francisco Bay Area of the state of California, USA. Specifically this rare species occurs in Napa, Santa Barbara, Solano, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Monterey and Alameda Counties. This annual herb typically flowers from March through June, and its colonies grow in vernal pool habitats at elevations not exceeding 100 meters above sea level. The Jepson Manual notes that the present distribution is limited to the deltaic Sacramento Valley, principally Napa and Solano Counties, but the historic range of L. conjugens is known to be significantly wider. In any case, historically the range has included parts of the North Coast, Sacramento Valley, and San Francisco Bay Area as well as the South Coast. Alternatively and less frequently this taxon has been referred to as Baeria fremontii var. conjugens.
Asimina tetramera, commonly known as the four-petal pawpaw, is a rare species of small tree or perennial shrub endemic to Martin and Palm Beach Counties in the state of Florida. The species is currently listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and as endangered by the International Union for Conservation. The four-petal pawpaw is part of the family Annonaceae alongside other Asimina species.
Arctostaphylos confertiflora is a rare species of manzanita known by the common name Santa Rosa Island manzanita. This shrub is endemic to California, where it grows on the sandstone bluffs of Santa Rosa Island in the Channel Islands. This manzanita is listed as an endangered species by the United States Government.
Allium munzii, also known by its common name, Munz's onion, is a bulb forming perennial herb endemic to Western Riverside County, California. This flower is characterized by its umbrella-like shape and flower clusters. Allium munzii is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act as of 1998. There are thirteen known populations in existence, and the latest population count stands at 20,000-70,000 individuals, counted in 1998. Major threats to this flower include urbanization, agriculture, clay mining, and other human activities. A recovery plan for Allium munzii is not in motion but there are steps being taken to protect this species.
Arctomecon humilis is an endangered flowering plant species in the family Papaveraceae. It is endemic to the Dixie Corridor in southwest Utah. A. humilis grows in a very harsh desert environment, requiring a specific soil type. The plant's common name is dwarf bear-poppy, which is indicative of the plant's jagged, three “clawed” leaves. The poppy is a perennial plant, meaning it blooms annually. The dwarf bear-poppy is protected under the Endangered Species Act as of 1979. The plant is threatened by urban development, off-road vehicle use, and mining. Although hard to estimate, its population has diminished significantly over the years. There are several plans to protect the poppy, including making the land it occurs on a protected area.
Calystegia stebbinsii is a rare species of morning glory known by the common name Stebbins' false bindweed. It is endemic to the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, where it is known from only two spots in El Dorado and Nevada Counties. It grows in unique habitat in chaparral on gabbro soils. It is a federally listed endangered species.
Camissonia benitensis is a species of evening primrose known by the common names San Benito suncup and San Benito evening primrose. It is endemic to the Diablo Range of the South Coast Ranges of California, where its range includes far southern San Benito County, far western Fresno County, and far eastern Monterey County.
Ceanothus verrucosus is a species of shrub in the family Rhamnaceae known by the common names wart-stem ceanothus, barranca brush, coast lilac and white coast ceanothus. It is endemic to northwestern Baja California and San Diego County, where it grows in coastal sage scrub and coastal succulent scrub habitats. It is considered a rare species north of the international border, as most of the valuable coastal land that hosts this plant in the San Diego area has been claimed for development. In California, several extant populations still remain scattered around the region, such as one protected at Torrey Pines.
Astragalus holmgreniorum is a rare species of milkvetch known by the common names Holmgren milk-vetch and paradox milk-vetch. It is native to a tiny section of desert shrub woodland on the border between Utah and Arizona, in the far northern Mojave Desert. There are six populations remaining. It is a federally listed endangered species.
Conradina verticillata is a flowering shrub in the mint family, found in the Cumberland Plateau. It is also called Conradina montana, Cumberland rosemary or Cumberland false rosemary. It has been classified as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act since 1991.
Deinandra conjugens is a rare species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae known by the common names Otay tarplant and Otay tarweed. It is native to a small section of far northern Baja California in Mexico, its range extending north into San Diego County, California, in the United States. One isolated population has been reported from the hills east of Cayucos in San Luis Obispo County.
Dicerandra christmanii is a rare species of flowering plant in the mint family known by the common names Garrett's mint, yellow scrub balm, and Lake Wales balm. It is endemic to Highlands County, Florida, in the United States, where it is known from only four sites on the Lake Wales Ridge. All are contained within a tract of land measuring 6 kilometers by 3 kilometers. The plant is steadily declining due to the destruction and degradation of its habitat, and only one of the four occurrences is on protected land. It is a federally listed endangered species.
Dicerandra frutescens is a rare species of flowering plant in the mint family known by the common names scrub mint and scrub balm. It is endemic to Highlands County, Florida, where it is known only from the Lake Wales Ridge. Its habitat is quickly being lost as it is converted to residential and agricultural use. It was federally listed as an endangered species of the United States in 1985.
Polygala lewtonii is a rare species of flowering plant in the milkwort family known by the common name Lewton's polygala, or Lewton's milkwort. It is endemic to Florida in the United States, where it is limited to the central ridge of the peninsula. There are about 49 occurrences of the plant remaining. Most occurrences contain very few plants. The species is threatened by the loss and degradation of its habitat. This is a federally listed endangered species of the United States.
Hazardia orcuttii is a rare North American species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae known by the common names Orcutt's bristleweed and Orcutt's goldenbush. It is native to California in the United States and Baja California in Mexico. It can be found in one location in California, in the city of Encinitas. There, it is located in and near a protected zone known as the Manchester Conservation Area. In Baja California it can be found at 11 to 17 locations.
Arctostaphylos glandulosa subsp. crassifolia is a rare perennial shrub, a subspecies of manzanita within the heather family commonly known as the Del Mar manzanita. It is narrowly endemic to the sandstone coastal terraces of San Diego County and northwestern Baja California. It is a burl-forming evergreen shrub typically found growing in a rambling habit on poor soils and hardpan. From December to February, white to pink urn-shaped flowers decorate its foliage, giving way to small fruits. It is listed as endangered and is threatened by land development, invasive species and modifications to the natural fire regime.
