Acanthoteuthis is a belemnite genus, a squid-like cephalopod with an internal shell from the Late Jurassic Epoch, related to modern coleoids.

Acanthoteuthis belongs to the belemnoid family Belemnotheutidae in which the pointed rostrum at the back of the phragmocone is lacking.

Taxonomy

The genus Acanthoteuthis was founded by R. Wagner and G. Munster for belemnoids, found in the Solnhofen limestone of Bavaria, which have small hooklets on their arms, sometimes associated with more or less complete remains of the animal. [1] The hooklets are typically compressed and may be beveled on either or both margins on one side.

Munster characterized three species, A. speciosa, A. ferussacii, and A. lichtensteinii, chiefly upon the forms of these hooklets. In A lichtensteinii they are smaller than in A speciosa and more circular in transverse section. D'Orbigny united the three under the name A. ferussacii while Wagner regarded A. speciosa as a valid species but saw no essential difference between Munster's A. ferussacii and A. lichtensteinii so united the two under the name A. ferussacii. C. G. Crick (1898) [1] described an Acanthoteuthis, A ferussachi with four pairs of arms, all eight of which have two rows of hooklets. The arms are of unequal length, the longest pair being almost 85 mm long, probably with 14 or 15 hooklets per row. The shortest arms are 32 mm long with another pair with a length of 38 mm, all four having 9 or 10 hooklets per row. The fourth pair are about 55 mm long with 12 or 13 hooklets per row. The pairs are in no particular physiological order other than that they are assumed to be bilaterally symmetrical. Other references, e.g. Catalogue of the Mollusca in the collection of the British museum, describe Acanthoteuthis as having ten, rather unequal arms, with two rows of hooks. The fifth pair seem to be auxiliary and are comparatively short.

Acanthoteuthis has a distinctive V-shaped ridge on the dorsal side at the back of its internal shell [2] which seems to be analogous to the median keel in the posterior part of the gladius in most recent squids to which the fins are attached. This indicates that Acanthoteuthis also had fins with similar attachment at the posterior end of the animal, and which may have been broadly oval or rhombohedral. The proostracum in front is flat, of considerable width and not likely to have been covered by muscular mantle, [2] which was probably attached to the lateral edges as in recent Vampyroteuthis .

Paleoecology and lifestyle

The absence of a counterbalancing rostrum indicates that Acanthoteuthis lived head down in a vertical orientation, like Spirula and Mastigoteuthis . [2] and the presence of an ink sac indicates it inhabited the upper 200 m of oceanic waters.

Acanthoteuthis and other belemnotheutids were thought to have been planktonic forms that inhabited the epipelagic and possibly upper mesopelagic zones over the continental shelves and slopes of Mesozoic continental seas. [2]

The mantle of the giant squid is about 2 m long, and the length of the squid excluding its tentacles rarely exceeds 5 m (16 ft). The vampire squid is a small cephalopod found throughout temperate and tropical oceans in extreme deep sea conditions. The vampire squid uses its bioluminescent organs and its unique oxygen metabolism to thrive in the parts of the ocean with the lowest concentrations of oxygen. It has two long retractile filaments, located between the first two pairs of arms on its dorsal side, which distinguish it from both octopuses and squids, and places it in its own order, Vampyromorphida, although its closest relatives are octopods. <i>Proteroctopus</i> Genus of octopuses

Proteroctopus is an extinct genus of cephalopod that lived in the Middle Jurassic, approximately 164 million years ago. It is only known from a single species P. ribeti. The single fossil specimen assigned to this species originates from the Lower Callovian of Voulte-sur-Rhône in France. It is currently on display at the Musée de Paléontologie de La Voulte-sur-Rhône. While originally interpreted as an early octopus, a 2016 restudy of the specimen considered it to be a basal member of the Vampyropoda, less closely related to octopus or vampire squid than either of the two groups are to each other. A phylogenetic analysis by Kruta et. al indicates that Proteroctopus may be more closely related to the Vampyromorpha based on its unique morphology: two fins, head fused to the body, eight arms, two rows of oblique sucker, a gladius and absence of an ink sac. A 2022 phylogenetic analysis also found it to be more closely related to vampire squid than to octopuses.

<i>Belemnotheutis</i> Genus of molluscs

Belemnotheutis is an extinct coleoid cephalopod genus from the middle and upper Jurassic, related to but morphologically distinct from belemnites. Belemnotheutis fossils are some of the best preserved among coleoids. Remains of soft tissue are well-documented in some specimens, even down to microscopic muscle tissue. In 2008, a group of paleontologists even recovered viable ink from ink sacs found in several specimens.

<i>Teudopsis</i> Genus of molluscs

Teudopsis is a genus of the coleoid cephalopod family Teudopsidae, known only from Lower Jurassic gladii. It has been reported from Alberta, Canada and Europe. The life appearance of Teudopsis is probably best inferred by its close relative Trachyteuthis. A fossil with soft tissue preservation shows that this animal may have had two mantle fins, which may also be the case for Teudopsis.

The cephalopods have a long geological history, with the first nautiloids found in late Cambrian strata.

Belemnitida is an extinct order of squid-like cephalopods that existed from the Late Triassic to Late Cretaceous. Unlike squid, belemnites had an internal skeleton that made up the cone. The parts are, from the arms-most to the tip: the tongue-shaped pro-ostracum, the conical phragmocone, and the pointy guard. The calcitic guard is the most common belemnite remain. Belemnites, in life, are thought to have had 10 hooked arms and a pair of fins on the guard. The chitinous hooks were usually no bigger than 5 mm (0.20 in), though a belemnite could have had between 100 and 800 hooks in total, using them to stab and hold onto prey.
