Species are native to the Americas, from North Dakota to northern Argentina, and to eastern Africa as well as the Indian subcontinent and Indochina. The generic name is derived from the Greek word μῖμος (mimos), an "actor" or "mime", and the feminine suffix -osa, "resembling", suggesting its 'sensitive leaves' which seem to 'mimic conscious life'.

Members of the genus, commonly known as babybonnets, are shrubs and small trees native to the Southwestern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America as far south as Brazil and Peru. Carl Sigismund Kunth was a German botanist. He was also known as Karl Sigismund Kunth or anglicized as Charles Sigismund Kunth. He was one of the early systematic botanists who focused on studying the plants of the Americas. Kunth's notable contributions include the publication of Nova genera et species plantarum quas in peregrinatione ad plagam aequinoctialem orbis novi collegerunt Bonpland et Humboldt. This work spanned seven volumes and was published between 1815 and 1825.

It includes 13 species of perennial climbing herbs which range from the southwestern United States through Mexico, Central America, and western (Andean) South America to northern Argentina. Most species are montane, and habitats include tropical to warm temperate montane forest, woodland, thicket, wooded grassland, and open bushland on mountain slopes.
Psacalium is a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family. Indianbush is a common name for Psacalium.
Jaegeria is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae found from Mexico to South America. The name commemorates Georg Friedrich von Jaeger.
