The Ashanti Region is located in south Ghana and is third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) or 10.2 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. In terms of population, however, it is the most populated region with a population of 4,780,380 according to the 2011 census, accounting for 19.4% of Ghana's total population. The Ashanti Region is known for its major gold bar and cocoa production. The largest city and regional capital is Kumasi.

However on 15 March 2018, the eastern part of the district was split off to become Achiase District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Birim South District. The district assembly is located in the southwest part of Eastern Region and has Akim Swedru as its capital town.

Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem District, which was created from the Cape Coast Municipal Council; until it was later elevated to municipal district assembly status on 29 February 2008 to become Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southwest part of Central Region and has Elmina as its capital town.

However on 28 June 2012, it was split out into two new districts: Awutu Senya West District and Awutu Senya East District. The district assembly was located in the southeast part of Central Region and had Awutu Breku as its capital town.

The IR1 or Inter-Regional Highway 1 is a highway in Ghana that begins at Mankessim in the Central Region and runs through Agona Swedru and Nsawam to Aburi. It runs parallel to the N1 between the Central and Eastern regions, and has a total distance of 142 kilometers. The route runs through the Central, Greater Accra and Eastern regions of Ghana.
Emmanuel Kobla Bensah was a Ghanaian nurse pharmacist and politician during the first republic. He served as a nurse pharmacist in various hospitals in the Gold Coast prior to politics. As a politician he served on various ministerial portfolios in the Nkrumah government until the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah.
