The Districts of Ghana are second-level administrative subdivisions of Ghana, below the level of region. There are currently 261 local metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
The Ashanti Region is located in the southern part of Ghana and is the third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) and making up 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the most populated region in Ghana, with a population of 5,440,463 according to the 2021 census, accounting for around one-sixth of Ghana's total population. The Ashanti Region is known for its gold bar and cocoa production. The largest city and capital of Ashanti is Kumasi.
The Central Region is one of the sixteen administrative regions of Ghana. Ashanti and Eastern regions border it to the north, Western region to the west, Greater Accra region to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. The Central Region is renowned for its many elite high schools and an economy based on an abundance of industrial minerals and tourism. The Central region boasts of many tourist attractions, such as castles, forts and beaches dotted along the region's coastline.
Agona Swedru is a town and the capital of Agona West Municipal District, a district in the Central Region of south Ghana. Agona Swedru has a 2010 settlement population of about 55,239 people.
Agona District is a former district that was located in Central Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988. However on 29 February 2008, it was split off into two new districts: Agona West District and Agona East District. The district assembly was located in the northeast part of Central Region and had Agona Swedru as its capital town.
Birim South District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger and first Birim South District in 1988, which was created from the former Birim District Council, until the western part of the district was split off to create a new Birim South District on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Birim Central Municipal District, with Akim Oda as its capital town. However, on 15 March 2018, the eastern part of the district was split off to become Achiase District; thus, the remaining part has been retained as Birim South District. The district assembly is located in the southwest part of Eastern Region and has Akim Swedru as its capital town.
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana. It forms part of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana with Kumasi being its administrative capital. The metropolis is located in the central part of Ashanti Region and has Kumasi as its capital city. With a projected population of over two million and an annual growth rate of about 5.4%, it is a rapidly expanding metropolis. The Metropolis is about 254 kilometers long, with a centrally located commercial area and a largely circular physical structure. The fast rate of urbanization is confirmed by estimates that 48%, 46%, and 60% of the Metropolis are rural, peri-urban, and urban, respectively.
West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly is one of the six districts in North East Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as West Mamprusi District, which was created from the former Mamprusi District Council, until the western part of the district was split off on 28 June 2012 to create Mamprugu-Moagduri District; thus the remaining part has been retained as West Mamprusi District. However, on 15 March 2018, it was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become West Mamprusi Municipal District. The municipality is located in the western part of North East Region and has Walewale as its capital town. Other settlements within the municipal assembly include Wulugu.
Birim Central Municipal District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as the first Birim South District, which it was created from the former Birim District Council, until the western part of the district was split off to create a new Birim South District, with Akim Swedru as its capital town; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Birim Central Municipal District on 29 February 2008, with Akim Oda as its capital town, which it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on that same year. However on 15 March 2018, the southeast part of the district was split off to become Asene-Manso-Akroso District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Birim Central Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southwest part of Eastern Region and has Akim Oda as its capital town.
Adenta Municipal District is one of the twenty-nine districts in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Tema Municipal District, which was created from the former Tema District Council, until two parts of the district were later split off to create Adenta Municipal District and Ashaiman Municipal District respectively on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status on that same year to become Tema Metropolitan District. The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has Adenta East as its capital town.
Agona East District is one of the twenty-two districts in Central Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Agona District in 1988, until the eastern part of the district was split off to create Agona East District on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Agona West District, which was also elevated to municipal district assembly status on that same year to become Agona West Municipal District. The district assembly is located in the northeast part of Central Region and has Nsaba as its capital town.
Sunyani West District is one of the twelve districts in Bono Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Sunyani District on 10 March 1989; until the northwest part of the district was split off to create Sunyani West District on 1 November 2007 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Sunyani District. The district assembly is located in the western part of Bono Region and has Odumase as its capital town.
Nyakrom is a town in the Agona West Municipal District of the Central Region of Ghana. The town is known for the Nyakrom Day Secondary School. The school is a second cycle institution. Nyakrom is the sixty-second most populous settlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 22,911 people. Nyakrom has a Wesleyan Methodist Church. Catechist Henry Amoa Saah played important role in its planting and growth at the foundational stages. Nyakrom is known for having first rural bank in Ghana
West Akim Municipal District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as West Akim District, which was created from the former West Akim District Council. Later, it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 1 November 2007 to become West Akim Municipal District. However on 28 June 2012, the southern part of the district was split off to create Upper West Akim District; thus the remaining part has been retained as West Akim Municipal District. The current MP for West Akim Municipal District is HON. CHARLES ACHEAMPONG. The municipal is located in the southern part of Eastern Region and has Asamankese as its capital town. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Ga South Municipal Assembly on 29 February 2008, until a small portion of the district was split off to create Ga Central Municipal District on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been retained as Ga South Municipal District. The municipality is located in the western part of Greater Accra Region and has Sowutuom as its capital town.
Binduri District is one of the fifteen districts in Upper East Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Bawku Municipal District in 1988; until two parts of the district were later split off to create Binduri District and Pusiga District respectively on 28 June 2012. The district assembly is located in the eastern part of Upper East Region and has Binduri as its capital town. The capital of Binduri District is Binduri town.
Ayawaso Central Municipal District is one of the twenty-nine districts in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Accra Metropolitan District in 1988, until a small portion of the district was split off to create Ayawaso Central Municipal District on 9 February 2019; thus the remaining part has been retained as Accra Metropolitan District. The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has Kokomlemle as its capital town.
New Juaben South Municipal Assembly is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger New Juaben Municipal District in 1988 until the northern part of the district was split off to create New Juaben North Municipal Assembly on 15 March 2018; thus the remaining part has been renamed as New Juaben South Municipal Assembly. The municipality is located in the central part of the Eastern Region and has Koforidua as its capital town.
Pru East District is one of the eleven districts in Bono East Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Pru District on 18 February 2004, until the western part of the district was split off to create Pru West District on 15 March 2008; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Pru East District. The district assembly is located in the east central part of Bono East Region and has Yeji as its capital town.
Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly is one of the twenty-nine districts in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Ga West District in 2004, until the western part of the district was split off to create the first Ga South Municipal Assembly on 29 February 2008, with Weija as its capital town; thus the remaining part was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Ga West Municipal Assembly. Later, a small portion of the district was split off to create Ga Central Municipal Assembly on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been retained as Ga South Municipal District. However on 15 March 2018, the northern part of the district was split off to create a new Ga South Municipal District, with Ngleshie Amanfro as its capital town; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Weija Gbawe Municipal District, with Weija as its capital town. The municipality is located in the western part of Greater Accra Region and has Weija as its capital town.
