Amy Shuler Goodwin (born March 9, 1971) is an American journalist and politician from the state of West Virginia. She is the first female mayor of Charleston, West Virginia, serving since January 2019.
Goodwin is a native of Wheeling, West Virginia. [3] Her father, Floyd Shuler, is a business owner, and her mother, Pat Shuler, is a teacher. [4] Her grandmother, Thais Blatnik, served in the West Virginia Senate. [5]
Goodwin graduated from Wheeling Park High School and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from West Virginia University in 1994. [6] She worked for ABC News as a researcher, [5] before working as a reporter and anchor for WCHS-TV in Charleston and WTRF-TV in Wheeling. [7]
Goodwin served as communications director for Kemp Melton, the mayor of Charleston, in the 1990s, [8] and as state communications director for John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. [9] She also served as communications director for Governors Bob Wise and Earl Ray Tomblin. In 2014, Tomblin appointed her as commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Tourism and deputy secretary of commerce. [9] [10] She served in the role until January 2017, when Governor Jim Justice selected Chelsea Ruby for the position. [11]
In February 2017, Goodwin declared her intention to run for mayor of Charleston in the 2018 election, seeking to succeed Danny Jones, who opted not to run for reelection. [12] [13] She defeated Republican J. B. Akers and independent Andy Backus in the November 2018 general election, and won with almost 51% of the vote. She was sworn into office on January 7, 2019, becoming the first female mayor of Charleston. [14]

Goodwin is married to Booth Goodwin, a former United States Attorney and 2016 Democratic candidate for Governor. They wed on April 17, 1999 and have two sons. [5]
Charleston is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of West Virginia and the seat of Kanawha County. Located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers. The population was 48,864 at the 2020 census. According to 2023 census estimates, the city is estimated to have a population of 46,838. The Charleston metropolitan area had 203,164 residents in 2023.

Wheeling Park High School is a public high school in Wheeling, West Virginia, United States. It is the only public high school in the Ohio County School District. Athletic teams compete as the Wheeling Park Patriots in the WVSSAC Class AAA, as well as the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.
Earl Ray Tomblin is an American politician who served as the 35th governor of West Virginia from 2011 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the West Virginia Senate from 1980 to 2011 and as president of the West Virginia Senate from 1995 to 2011. Tomblin became acting governor in November 2010 following Joe Manchin's election to the U.S. Senate. He won a special election in October 2011 to fill the unexpired term ending on January 14, 2013, and was elected to a full term as governor in November 2012.

Natalie E. Tennant is an American politician who served as the Secretary of State of West Virginia from 2009 to 2017. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Tennant was the 2014 Democratic Party nominee for West Virginia's open U.S. Senate seat, which she lost to Republican Shelley Moore Capito. In 2016 she was defeated for re-election by Republican Mac Warner, and left office on January 16, 2017.

The 2011 West Virginia gubernatorial special election was a special election held on October 4, 2011, to fill the office of the West Virginia Governor, which became vacant upon the resignation of Joe Manchin, who resigned after he won a U.S. Senate special election. Lieutenant Governor and Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, first in the line of succession to the governorship, subsequently became acting governor. On January 18, 2011, the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals ruled that a special election for the governorship must be held so a new governor can be in place by November 15, 2011, exactly one year after Manchin resigned. The primary election was held on May 14. Tomblin and Republican Bill Maloney won their respective primaries.

On June 23, 2016, a flood hit areas of the U.S. state of West Virginia and nearby parts of Virginia, resulting in 23 deaths. The flooding was the result of 8 to 10 inches of rain falling over a period of 12 hours, resulting in a flood that was among the deadliest in West Virginia history. It is also the deadliest flash flood event in the United States since the 2010 Tennessee floods.

WVML was founded in 1968 and is located in Charleston, West Virginia. As a member of the National League of Cities, the WVML is able to offer legislative representation in Washington, D.C., and connections to other municipal governments throughout the United States.
