Danny Avula (born 1978) [1] is an American public health professional and politician who is currently Mayor of Richmond,Virginia following his victory in the 2024 election. He is a member of the Democratic Party and the city's first immigrant and first Indian mayor.
Avula was born in Hyderabad,India and immigrated with his family to the United States a year after he was born. His father joined the U.S. Navy and his family lived in California until Avula's late elementary school years. After his father retired from active duty,both his parents spent their careers working for the Department of Defense. [2] He grew up in Northern Virginia. [3]
Avula attended the University of Virginia studying biology for his undergrad,graduating when he was 19. [3] He then attended medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University to become a pediatrician. [4] Later,he earned a Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. [2]
Avula gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic earning the nickname "Richmond's Dr. Fauci" and led vaccination efforts in Virginia. [5] He previously served as director of the Health District covering Richmond and Henrico County. [6] In 2020,he was named Style Weekly's Richmonder of the Year. [3] He went on to be appointed Commissioner of Social Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia by Governors Ralph Northam and Glenn Youngkin. [4]
Avula announced his campaign for mayor of Richmond,Virginia on April 10,2024. [7] On November 5,2024,Avula won the 2024 Richmond mayoral election becoming mayor-elect of the city. [8] Avula was sworn in on January 1,2025,making him the city's first immigrant mayor. [7]
Avula is married to Mary Kay,a Richmond Public Schools elementary school teacher. He and his wife have five children. [9] One of their children is adopted. [10]
He serves on the board of the Medical College of Virginia Foundation and previously chaired the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation. [11]

Originally developed as a resort,a central portion of Bon Air has been designated as a National Historic District with many structures of Victorian design from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its name means "good air," reflecting its role as a resort getaway that wealthy Richmonders enjoyed for its fresh air as opposed to the dirty air of Richmond's industrial downtown of the late 19th century.

Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS),part of the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University,commonly known as Virginia Health Sciences,is a public medical school in Norfolk,Virginia operated by Old Dominion University. Founded by grassroots efforts in the Southeastern part of Virginia known as Hampton Roads,EVMS had historically not been affiliated with an undergraduate institution and therefore coordinates training through multiple medical centers in the Hampton Roads region. Effective on July 1,2024,the nearby Old Dominion University merged with EVMS to create a comprehensive university with EVMS being the medical school component of the larger university.

Joseph H. Seipel was an American sculptor and conceptual artist who was formerly the Dean of the VCU School of the Arts. He was a member of the VCU faculty for over 40 years. As Dean of VCU arts,he also had oversight of the VCU School of the Arts branch in Doha,Qatar. He administered VCU exchange programs with art and design schools in Finland,India,Israel and Korea. He retired in 2016. He died on June 12,2024.
Eleanor Parker Sheppard was an American civic activist and Democratic politician who became the first woman to be elected to the city council of Richmond,Virginia,and later became her adopted city's first female mayor,then represented its citizens in the Virginia General Assembly for a decade.

The son of Confederate general Eppa Hunton,he experienced a turbulent childhood with the American Civil War and Reconstruction as its backdrop. After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law,he practiced law with his father in Warrenton,Virginia,for a number of years before moving south to Richmond in 1901 to help found the law firm Munford,Hunton,Williams &Anderson.
The 2024 Richmond mayoral election took place on November 5,2024,to elect the mayor of Richmond,Virginia. The election was won by Danny Avula who will take office as the city's 81st mayor in January 2025. He will become the city's first immigrant mayor.
In January 2025,the city of Richmond,Virginia and its surrounding localities suffered water distribution outages due to a blizzard,which impacted much of the United States. The issues started on the morning of Monday,January 6,and were mostly resolved by Saturday,January 11. The localities' water systems are interconnected,meaning that problems in Richmond City led to problems across the region. Richmond was the most impacted,followed by Henrico to the immediate north. Henrico is bordered on the north by Hanover County and on the east by Goochland County,which also faced some impacts. Chesterfield County,to the south of Richmond,was impacted very little,as they were able to effectively switch water sources and have very few customers who directly receive water from the city.
