Lauren Stein McLean (born October 20,1974) is an American politician and entrepreneur serving as the mayor of Boise,Idaho. McLean served as a member of the Boise City Council from 2011 to 2019,and as council president from 2017 to 2019,before defeating four term incumbent Mayor Dave Bieter in the 2019 mayoral election.
McLean was born in Boston,Massachusetts,and raised in Houston,Texas,and Cazenovia,New York. [1] McLean received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1997 and a Master of Public Administration in environmental policy from Boise State University in 2001.
McLean and her husband Scott have two children. [2]
McLean serves on the board of governors of the Andrus Center for Public Policy at Boise State University. She is also a member of the Boise City Planning and Zoning Association and Boise Parks Commission. [3]
McLean was a candidate in the 2019 Boise mayoral election,running against incumbent Dave Bieter,former mayor H. Brent Coles,and others. Since neither Bieter nor McLean had surpassed the 50 percent vote threshold required to claim victory,the two competed in a runoff election held on December 3,2019. [4] McLean won with 65.5 percent of the vote to Bieter's 34.5 percent. [5] [6] [7] The mayor's office is a nonpartisan position,though McLean is a registered Democrat. [8] [9]
McLean is the first woman elected to the office,and the second to serve as Boise mayor after Carolyn Terteling-Payne,who served briefly on an interim basis from 2003 to 2004. [10] McLean was inaugurated on January 7,2020. [11]
On July 1,2020,McLean presided over the swearing-in of Boise's new police chief,Ryan Lee,who had been confirmed to the position by the Boise City Council. [12] [13] The ceremony took place the day following a Boise Black Lives Matter rally. McLean does not support defunding the police to divert funds to social services. In response to a question about her position,she stated that "We have to have a safe city if we’re going to have a city where everyone can thrive. I’m in full support of our police department." [13] McLean has stated that she supports increasing funding for social services while maintaining funding for the police department. [12]
McLean announced in March 2020 that April rents in city-owned public housing would be forgiven,and that during the same period the city would place a moratorium on evictions from public rental housing. [14]
In November 2020,in response to rising numbers of COVID-19 cases and occupied hospital beds,McLean issued a mask mandate and closed public facilities. [15] In response to the mask mandate,there were protests outside McLean's residence,in addition to a mask-burning ceremony. [16] The city of Boise announced in January 2021 that public facilities would expand services beginning on February 1,2021. McLean noted that "We have seen a steady hold in cases the last couple weeks and our city is here to serve the public." [17]
McLean announced Idaho's votes in the roll call at the 2020 Democratic National Convention where she also promoted the city's efforts to combat global warming. [18] Due to Idaho's rising population,McLean has worked with city developers to build affordable housing. [19]
McLean was the incumbent candidate. Former police chief Mike Masterson ran in 2023 along with Joe Evans who received 0.9 percent of the vote and Aaron Reis who received 0.3 percent of the vote. McLean won with 55.4 percent of the vote,and Masterson with 43%. [20] This election year had 43.8 percent turnout of registered Boise voters. [21] The voter turnout was higher than in previous years.

Boise is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Idaho and is the county seat of Ada County. As of the 2020 census, there were 235,684 people residing in the city. On the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, it is 41 miles (66 km) east of the Oregon border and 110 miles (177 km) north of the Nevada border. The downtown area's elevation is 2,704 feet (824 m) above sea level.
Ada County is located in the southwestern part of Idaho, United States. As of the 2020 census, the county had a population of 494,967, which by 2022 was estimated to have risen to 518,907. Ada County is by far the state's most populous county; it is home to 26.8% of the state's population. The county seat and largest city is Boise, which is also the state capital. Ada County is included in the Boise metropolitan area. The Ada County Highway District has jurisdiction over all the local county and city streets, except for private roads and state roads. In the interior Pacific Northwest east of the Cascade Range, Ada County ranks second in population, behind Spokane County, Washington.

The station's studios are located on West Fairview Avenue in Boise, and its transmitter is located on Deer Point in unincorporated Boise County. It is rebroadcast by KTFT-LD in Twin Falls, which airs KTVB programming with local advertising for the Magic Valley area from its transmitter on Flat Top Butte near Jerome, Idaho, and maintains a local sales office in Twin Falls.
KIVI-TV is a television station licensed to Nampa, Idaho, United States, serving the Boise area as an affiliate of ABC. Owned by the E. W. Scripps Company, the station maintains studios on East Chisholm Drive in Nampa, while its transmitter is located at the Bogus Basin ski area summit in unincorporated Boise County.
David Harold Bieter is an American politician and attorney who served as mayor of Boise from 2004 to 2020. A Democrat, Bieter was the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. According to The New York Times, he was the only Basque-speaking mayor in the United States as of 2012. His father, Pat Bieter, was also a local politician who served in the Idaho House of Representatives.
H. Brent Coles is an American politician who served as mayor of Boise, Idaho from 1993 to 2003. Coles resigned from office after accepting an illegal trip to the 2002 Winter Olympics from an insurance company. Coles was a candidate in the 2019 Boise mayoral election, placing fourth out of seven candidates in first round of voting.
Chuck Winder is an American politician and Republican member of the Idaho Senate. He serves as the president pro tempore of the Idaho Senate and previously served as the majority leader. He is married to Dianne Winder; the couple has two children.

The 2019 United States elections were held, in large part, on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. This off-year election included gubernatorial elections in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi; regularly-scheduled state legislative elections in Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, and New Jersey; and special elections for seats in various state legislatures. Numerous citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections also occurred. The Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial is a .81 acres (0.33 ha) cenotaph complex and educational park in Boise, Idaho near the Boise Public Library and the Greenbelt, the centerpiece of which is a statue of Anne Frank; it is jointly maintained by the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights and the Boise Department of Parks and Recreation, and is the only human rights memorial in the U.S. Designed by Idaho Falls architect Kurt Karst, a sapling of the Anne Frank Tree and quotations from some sixty notables and unknowns are prominent installations. It also features one of the few installations where the full text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is on permanent public display. The park has been recognized and accepted by the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. It was thoroughly renovated in September 2018, with an outdoor classroom and a new sculpture, "The Spiral of Injustice."

Health Freedom Idaho is an anti-vaccine group that also opposes health regulations, such as mask requirements and restrictions on the operation of businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Founded sometime shortly before October 2016, the organization describes its mission as including "preserv[ing] our freedoms in regard to the health care of our choice." While the group's activities have mainly taken place in the Boise area, the organization has a northern chapter.
