Annette Cottle is a former volleyball player and coach. She played collegiately for BYU and Utah State.

Early years

Cottle grew up in Salt Lake City, [1] and attended Cottonwood High School. [2]

College

Cottle started at BYU, in 1977, where she played volleyball for coach Elaine Michaelis. [1] That year, the team earned an invitation to the 1977 AIAW National Large College Volleyball Championship, held in Provo, Utah. In the first round, BYU defeated Long Beach State, to reach the Final Four. However, in the semi-finals, USC prevailed. USC went on to win the title game, and became the national champion. [3] Cottle's play earned her a position on the All-American team for the season. [4]

Cottle then transferred to Utah State, due to her connections with Marilyn McReavy and Mary Jo Peppler, the co-coaches at Utah State, both of whom she knew through club volleyball. [2] In her first year at Utah State, she helped lead the team to the 1978 AIAW National Volleyball Championship. Utah State defeated San Diego State in the first round, then defeated Pepperdine in the semifinals, and defeated UCLA in four games to win the National Championship. [3] Cottle won the Broderick Award (now the Honda Sports Award) as the nation's best female collegiate volleyball player in 1978–79. [5] [6] She helped the team reach the title game in her senior year. Utah State won the first two games of the championship, but Hawai'i came back to win the next three, so Utah State ended up as the runnerup in 1980. [3] She was named to the All-America team (Large Colleges) in both 1978 and 1979. [3]

She was inducted into Utah State's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993, [7] and as part of the team inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008. She always felt that the order should have been reversed, explaining "I only got into the Hall of Fame because of the team. They really should have been inducted first. In volleyball, it doesn’t matter how good you are on your own. Without your team, you can’t make it.” [2]

Cottle was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. [8] [9]

Coaching

In 1982, Cottle became the women's volleyball coach at Utah State University, replacing Marilyn McReavy and Mary Jo Peppler, where she remained for three years. [10] [7] Later, she coached in the professional National Volleyball Association, as coach of the Utah Predators and the Golden Spikers. [2]

Devin George Durrant is an American retired professional basketball player. From 1984 to 1985 he played with the Indiana Pacers and with the Phoenix Suns. He later played in European basketball leagues until 1988. In a Deseret News poll in the year 2000, he was voted one of the top 10 college basketball players in the state of Utah over the previous 100 years. In 1999, Sports Illustrated listed him as one of the 50 greatest Utah sports figures.

Sally Schlobohm Tan is a volleyball player and coach. She played collegiately for Kellogg Community College and Texas, and coached at Leander High School.

Patty Dowdell is a retired volleyball player who primarily was on the United States women's national volleyball team from 1974 to 1980. With the national team, Dowdell and the United States finished in seventh at the 1977 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup and fifth at the 1978 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship. After playing at the 1979 Pan American Games, Dowdell was part of the American volleyball team that boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics. She resumed playing on the national team in the early 1980s and did not play any games at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Outside of the national team, Dowdell played for the Dallas Belles and Chicago Breeze in the Major League Volleyball during the late 1980s.

The South Florida Bulls volleyball team represents the University of South Florida in the sport of women's volleyball. The Bulls compete in the American Athletic Conference of NCAA Division I. The team plays their home games at The Corral inside the Yuengling Center on USF's campus in Tampa, Florida. They are coached by Jolene Shepardson who was hired after the 2019 season. The Bulls have reached seven NCAA women's volleyball tournaments and won a combined 18 regular season and tournament conference championships in their history, the most of any women's team at USF.

Annette Smith-Knight has worked in the community services department for the University of Texas at Austin since the mid 2000s. Smith began her time with Texas when she played for the Texas Longhorns women's basketball team during the 1980s. While with Texas, Smith appeared at the final of the 1982 AIAW National Division I Basketball Championship and won gold at the 1983 World University Games with the American basketball team. After not playing for over a year due to injury, Smith resumed playing in 1985 and won the 1986 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament with the Longhorns. Following her 131 career games, Smith's school career records of 1052 field goals and 2523 points with Texas have remained the highest for over 30 years.

Linda Marie Wells is a former American softball coach. She previously served as the head coach for the Minnesota Golden Gophers softball and Arizona State Sun Devils softball teams.
