  2. Arrondissement of Commercy, (subprefecture: Commercy) with 135 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 42,088 in 2021.
  3. Arrondissement of Verdun, (subprefecture: Verdun) with 254 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 82,317 in 2021.

History

In 1800 the arrondissements of Bar-le-Duc, Commercy, Montmédy and Verdun were established. The arrondissement of Montmédy was disbanded in 1926. [2]

Meuse is a department in northeast France, named after the River Meuse. Meuse is part of the current region of Grand Est and is landlocked and borders by the French departments of Ardennes, Marne, Haute-Marne, Vosges, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and Belgium to the north. Parts of Meuse belong to Parc naturel régional de Lorraine. It had a population of 184,083 in 2019. Front lines in trench warfare during World War I ran varying courses through the department and it hosted an important battle/offensive in 1916 in and around Verdun.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Réseau de la Woëvre</span>

The Réseau de la Woëvre was a 149 km (93 mi) long metre-gauge rail network that operated from 1914 to 1938 in France. A 66 km (41 mi) branch line to Commercy branched off from the 61 km Verdun-Montmédy main line at Vaux-devant-Damloup.
