Asianet Suvarna News is a Kannada news channel owned by Asianet News Network, a news media subsidiary of Jupiter Capital Private Limited. [1] The majority shareholder of the company is Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who is a Rajya Sabha member from the Bharatiya Janata Party. [2] Launched on 31 March 2008, the channel was the third news channel to be aired in the Kannada language. [3] The channel has telecast fabricated news and social media hoax es on various occasions. History

Asianet suvarna news (formerly Suvarna News) was launched as a 24x7 Kannada news channel on 31 March 2008 [3] by Asianet Communications Limited, the media enterprise of Jupiter Capital Private Limited. With the launch, Asianet Suvarna News became the third News channel in Kannada.

Suvarna News had existed as a news bulletin on Suvarna TV before the launch of its own channel in 2008. [9] [1] In November 2008, Star India acquired Asianet Communications excluding its news media operations. [10] As a result, Suvarna News was placed under the Asianet News Network which continued to be owned by Jupiter Capital. [1]

Suvarna News was rebranded as Asianet suvarna news on 01 Dec 2020.

Controversies

The channel has a history of frequent changes in its editorial leadership. According to Shashidhar Bhat, the first and former editor of the channel, Rajeev Chandrasekhar maintains editorial control through the corporate management of the company. [1] The channel has also been documented to have telecast fabricated news on multiple occasions; in instances picked up from unverified social media hoax es. [4] [6] [5] [8] [7]

According to some reports, personnel from Suvarna News had also provided technical assistance for setting up NaMo TV, BJP party propaganda channel, before and after the 2019 Indian general election. [1]

The National Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) finned Suvarna News was Rs 50,000 for their biased coverage of the Tablighi Jamaat congregation of March 2020. [11] [12]

The Human rights organization, People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) reported that Suvarna News along with other media channels, aided right wing Hindutva activists with biased coverage, during the attacks by right-wingers against the Karnataka's Christian community in 2021. [13] [14]

Republic Bharat is a free-to-air Indian Hindi-language news channel affiliation of Republic TV, launched on 2 February 2019, operated and owned by Republic Media Network, co-founded by Arnab Goswami and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. It is also available on DD Free Dish. It is a sister channel of Republic World which broadcasts news primarily in English.

A Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation that took place in Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz Mosque in early March 2020 was a COVID-19 super-spreader event, with more than 4,000 confirmed cases and at least 27 deaths linked to the event reported across the country. Over 9,000 missionaries may have attended the congregation, with the majority being from various states of India, and 960 attendees from 40 foreign countries. On 18 April, 4,291 confirmed cases of COVID-19 linked to this event by the Union Health Ministry represented a third of all the confirmed cases of India. Around 40,000 people, including Tablighi Jamaat attendees and their contacts, were quarantined across the country.

The 2021 anti-Christian violence in Karnataka refers to the series violence against Christians by right wing Hindutva groups in the Indian state of Karnataka in 2021. The attacks increased after September 2021 when leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) declared of an "anti-conversion bill" in the state to check religious conversions. The violence again intensified over the Christmas period when right-wing mobs disrupted Christmas celebrations. The Human rights organisation, People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) documented 39 violent incidents against Christians in Karnataka from January to November 2021, all carried out by Hindutva organizations such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Hindu Jagrana Vedike, Bajrang Dal, and Banjara Nigama. The violence included physical assaults, sexual assaults against women, church vandalism, filming the attacks and later circulating the videos to celebrate.

Republic Kannada is a free-to-air Indian Kannada-language news channel, launched on 22 September 2023, by Republic Media Network, co-founded by Arnab Goswami and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Chandrashekhar funded the channel through his company Jupiter Capital Private Limited. Republic Kannada was previously named Dighvijaya News and was owned by Vijay Sankeshwar's VRL Media. Republic TV officially bought the channel and rebranded to Republic Kannada.
