Avenue were an English boy band. They participated in the third series of The X Factor in 2006 and initially made it to the final 12, but were banned from participation for having been specifically formed for the competition and having professional representation. [1] [2] [3] They continued to proclaim their innocence. [4]

A boy band is loosely defined as a vocal group consisting of young male singers, usually in their teenage years or in their twenties at the time of formation, singing love songs marketed towards young women. Being vocal groups, most boy band members do not play musical instruments, either in recording sessions or on stage, making the term something of a misnomer. However, exceptions do exist. Many boy bands dance as well as sing, usually giving highly choreographed performances.

<i>The X Factor</i> (UK series 3) season of the UK television series

The X Factor is a British television music competition to find new singing talent. The third series was broadcast on ITV from 19 August 2006 until 16 December 2006. Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Simon Cowell all returned for their third series on the judging panel. Kate Thornton returned to present the main show on ITV, while Ben Shephard returned to present spin-off show The Xtra Factor on ITV2. After the semi-final on 9 December, Cowell became the winning judge even though the series had not yet finished, as two of his acts, Ray Quinn and Leona Lewis, became the two finalists. Lewis won the series on 16 December, with Quinn finishing as runner-up.

<i>The X Factor</i> (UK TV series) British reality television music competition

The X Factor is a British reality television music competition to find new singing talent. The contestants are aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. Created by Simon Cowell, the show began in 2004 and has since aired annually from August/September until December. The show is produced by Fremantle's Thames and Cowell's production company Syco Entertainment. It is broadcast on the ITV network in the UK and simulcast on Virgin Media One in Ireland. "X Factor" refers to the undefinable "something" that makes for star quality. The series consists of auditions, bootcamp, judges' houses, several weeks of live shows, semi-finals and the final. The series had a spin-off behind-the-scenes show called The Xtra Factor, which aired directly after the main show on ITV2. This lasted for the first thirteen series, when it was cancelled by ITV in January 2017. It is replaced by an online spin-off show Xtra Bites exclusively on the ITV Hub. The first three series were presented by Kate Thornton, since series four, with the exception of series twelve, the show has been presented by Dermot O'Leary. After leaving The X Factor, they stayed together and had brief success with the single "Last Goodbye", which reached the UK top 50 and topped the Scottish Singles Chart. After the split, Max George went on to become a member of the British-Irish boyband The Wanted, releasing a number of top 5 hits, two official UK number ones, and three top 10 albums. Jamie Tinkler left to form the indie band Baxter, and his replacement in Avenue, Andy Brown, went on to be the lead singer of Lawson, who have released five top 10 singles.

The Scottish Singles Chart and Scottish Albums Chart are charts compiled by the Official Charts Company, based on physical and digital sales in Scotland. The Scottish Singles Chart and Scottish Albums Chart are national listings that indicate how sales towards the UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart are faring in Scotland. Currently, these charts are based only on paid-for sales so, with the growth of streaming, they only reflect a minority of the music consumption in Scotland which is counted towards the overall UK charts, just as the charts in the late 2000s did not reflect the majority of Scottish sales as they only counted physical sales.

The Wanted English-Irish boy band

The Wanted was a British-Irish boy band consisting of members Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker and Nathan Sykes. They formed in 2009 and were signed worldwide to Universal Music subsidiaries Island Records and Mercury Records, and managed by Scooter Braun.

Jamie Tinkler is an English singer and songwriter born in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, England in 1981.

History

2005–06: Beginnings

Max George was born in 1988 grew up with his family in Manchester [5] Before music, he had been a football player with Preston North End and on the verge of signing a two-year deal with them. [6] But because of an accident he had dropped his sport dreams to join Avenue and apply for auditions in The X Factor. After the break-up of the band, he joined the successful chart topping boy band The Wanted. George was engaged to actress Michelle Keegan, but called off the engagement. Despite the calling off of their engagement, the couple remained together for some time. However, they have now split up due to rumours spreading about Max cheating.

Michelle Keegan British actress

Michelle Elizabeth Keegan is an English actress, known for her roles as Tina McIntyre in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street and Lance Corporal Georgie Lane in the BBC drama series Our Girl. Keegan also starred as Tracy in Ordinary Lies and as Tina Moore in Tina and Bobby.

2006–07: The X Factor

In 2006, Avenue auditioned for the third series of The X Factor , singing an a cappella version of "Leave Right Now", a song by Will Young. [7] They made it through to bootcamp and judges' houses, and were mentored by Louis Walsh. Avenue made it to the final 12 contestants heading for the live shows but after Walsh discovered that Avenue were already on a management deal, he disqualified them from the competition [8] and Eton Road went through in their place.

A cappella music is specifically group or solo singing without instrumental accompaniment, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. It contrasts with cantata, which is usually accompanied singing. The term "a cappella" was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato style. In the 19th century a renewed interest in Renaissance polyphony coupled with an ignorance of the fact that vocal parts were often doubled by instrumentalists led to the term coming to mean unaccompanied vocal music. The term is also used, albeit rarely, as a synonym for alla breve.

Leave Right Now 2003 single by Will Young

"Leave Right Now" is a song written by Eg White and performed by Will Young. It appears on Will Young's second album, Friday's Child (2003) and was released as the first single from that album. The song also appears on the international version of Young's third album, Keep On (2005).

Will Young English singer-songwriter and actor

William Robert Young is a British singer-songwriter and actor from Wokingham, England, who came to prominence after winning the 2002 inaugural series of the ITV talent contest Pop Idol, making him the first winner of the worldwide Idol franchise. His double A-sided debut single "Anything Is Possible" / "Evergreen" was released two weeks after the show's finale and became the fastest-selling debut single in the UK. Young also came in fifth place in World Idol performing his single "Light My Fire".

2007–09: After The X Factor

After disqualification from The X Factor, Avenue were signed by Crown Music Management and won an album deal with Island Records. There was also a membership change with Jamie Tinkler leaving and being replaced by Andy Brown, after Tinkler decided to join the indie rock band Baxter. [9]

Avenue released their debut single "Last Goodbye", which reached number 50 on the UK Singles Chart [10] and number one on the Scottish Singles Chart. [11] The song features on the compilation albums Floorfillers Clubmix, Dance Mania Party and Pop Party 6. During 2008, Avenue supported fellow McFly on their Radio:active Tour and a February 2009 tour was planned, but later cancelled.

UK Singles Chart British singles sales chart

The UK Singles Chart is compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC), on behalf of the British record industry, listing the top-selling singles in the United Kingdom, based upon physical sales, paid-for downloads and streaming. The Official Chart, broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and MTV, is the UK music industry's recognised official measure of singles and albums popularity because it is the most comprehensive research panel of its kind, today surveying over 15,000 retailers and digital services daily, capturing 99.9% of all singles consumed in Britain across the week, and over 98% of albums. To be eligible for the chart, a single is currently defined by the Official Charts Company (OCC) as either a 'single bundle' having no more than four tracks and not lasting longer than 25 minutes or one digital audio track not longer than 15 minutes with a minimum sale price of 40 pence. The rules have changed many times as technology has developed, the most notable being the inclusion of digital downloads in 2005 and streaming in July 2014.

McFly English band

McFly are an English rock band formed in London in 2003. The band took its name from the Back to the Future character Marty McFly. The band consists of Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd (drums). They were signed to Island Records from their 2004 launch until December 2007, before creating their own label, Super Records.

Their follow-up single was going to be "Can You Feel It?", but a commercial release was cancelled and it was distributed free on music service 7digital. In 2008, while still a member of Avenue, Max George appeared nude on cover of British magazine AXM in support of cancer research in AXM's "Naked Issue". [12]

The band split up in April 2009 [13] Max George is now in The Wanted and Andy Brown fronts his own band, Lawson.

The initial line-up of Journey South featured Andy and Carl Pemberton along with Paul Williams on keyboard, Max Justice on drums and Matt Ellis on bass. The line up disbanded in 2001 leaving Andy and Carl as the only members. The duo achieved third place on the second UK series of television talent show The X Factor in 2005. In July 2015, Andy announced that Journey South had disbanded.

Pop! were a British pop group consisting of Glen Ball, Hannah Lewis, Jamie Tinkler, and Jade McGuire. The group was formed in the summer of 2003 when they were signed by Pete Waterman. They released three singles on the Sony BMG record label, but disbanded in early 2005, due to poor record sales.

"Valerie" is a song written by English indie rock band The Zutons from their second studio album Tired of Hanging Around (2006). Released as the album's second single on 19 June 2006 in the United Kingdom, along with their previous single "Why Won't You Give Me Your Love?", it gave The Zutons their joint-biggest single to date as well as their second UK top 10 single, climbing from number 41 to its peak at number 9 in the UK Singles Chart. A 2007 cover version by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse was more successful than the original, peaking at number 2 on the UK chart and number 1 in the Netherlands.

<i>Popstars: The Rivals</i> British television talent show

Popstars The Rivals is a British television talent show series that was broadcast on ITV in late 2002. It was the second UK series of the international Popstars franchise. Unlike Popstars, which resulted in the formation of one winning group, Hear'Say, Popstars: The Rivals created two rival groups, Girls Aloud and One True Voice, who competed against each other for the Christmas Number One spot on the UK Singles Chart. Girls Aloud would go on to achieve twenty-one top-tens, and from that, former member Cheryl Cole would achieve five number-ones.

JLS English boy band

JLS were an English pop/R&B group, which consisted of members Aston Merrygold, Oritsé Williams, Marvin Humes, and JB Gill, originally formed by Williams. They initially signed to Tracklacers production company New Track City and then went on to become runners-up of the fifth series of the ITV reality talent show The X Factor in 2008, coming second to Alexandra Burke. Following their appearance on The X Factor, JLS signed to Epic Records. Their first two singles "Beat Again" and "Everybody in Love" both went to number one on the UK Singles Chart.

Must Be the Music is a British television musical talent competition contested by aspiring singers and musicians drawn from public auditions. The show is a music competition and reality show that was broadcast in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Auditions were held in Edinburgh, Manchester, London and also held in Ireland. The show began airing in August on Sky1, and was also simulcast in HD. Fearne Cotton presented the show. The first and only series was won by Emma's Imagination, a female singer from Dumfries.

Aiden Samuel Grimshaw is an English singer, songwriter and actor who is better known by his stage name Butterjack. He successfully made it to the live shows in the seventh series of The X Factor in 2010 and finished ninth. After his elimination, Grimshaw was signed by RCA Records.

Hope were an English five-piece girl group consisting of Charlie Mole, Emily Biggs, Raquelle Gracie, Leah Lauder and Phoebe Brown, who found fame on the fourth series of The X Factor, originally a six-piece before prior to the live shows, Sisi Jghalef was forced to step down after it was discovered that she had an outstanding criminal conviction.

Emily Louise Biggs is an English singer and former member of girl group Parade. She entered The X Factor in 2007 as a solo artist and reached bootcamp. She was previously a member in the band Hope, which were formed on The X Factor. In 2009, the band's official website was taken down and they later disbanded.

The X Factor in the UK has been subject to much controversy and criticism since its launch. As of December 2017, there have been a total of fourteen completed series of the show broadcast on the ITV network.

Max George British singer, songwriter and producer

Maximillian Albert George is an English singer, songwriter and actor from Manchester, England, known for being a former member of boy band, The Wanted. In 2013, George starred in the E! channel reality series The Wanted Life.

Stereo Kicks were an English-Irish boy band made up of eliminated auditionees from The X Factor audition process. Stereo Kicks consisted of; James Graham, Jake Sims, Chris Leonard, Charlie Jones, Casey Johnson, Barclay Beales, Reece Bibby, and Tom Mann. The group finished fifth on the eleventh series of The X Factor in 2014. Their debut single "Love Me So" was released on 21 June 2015 and charted at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart. Just a month later, however, having been together under a year, they announced they were disbanding due to their failure to land a record deal.

Rak-Su are a British R&B group, formed in Watford. The band's name is a shortening of "Tracks v. Suits", i.e. "music and fun vs. adult life." They rose to fame after winning the fourteenth series of The X Factor in 2017. The group is made up of Ashley Fongho, Jamaal Shurland, Mustafa Rahimtulla and Myles Stephenson. "Dimelo", which features Naughty Boy and Wyclef Jean, was released as their winner's single; its release marked the first time a winner's single was written by the winning competitor. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number two, behind Ed Sheeran's "Perfect". Their self-titled debut extended play, Rak-Su, was released on 16 February 2018.
