The BMW Ljubljana Open is a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It is currently part of the WTA 125 series of the WTA Tour. In the past, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) organized an ATP Challenger which was last held in 2011. The tournament was first held in 1990 in Domžale, Slovenia (former Yugoslavia), before moving to Ljubljana from 2002.

Players on the Challenger Tour are usually young players looking to advance their careers, those who fail to qualify for ATP events, or former ATP players looking to get back into the big tour.

Aljaž Bedene is a Slovenian former professional tennis player. He was ranked as high as No. 43 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which he achieved in February 2018. He reached four singles finals on the ATP Tour as well as the third round at three of the four Grand Slam tournaments. He also attained his career-high ranking of No. 127 in doubles in October 2013. Between 2015 and 2017, Bedene represented Great Britain after becoming a naturalised Briton before he returned to represent Slovenia in 2018.

The 2022 ATP Tour was the global elite men's professional tennis circuit organised by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for the 2022 tennis season. The 2022 ATP Tour calendar comprised the Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP Finals, the ATP Tour Masters 1000, the ATP Cup, the ATP 500 series and the ATP 250 series. Also included in the 2022 calendar were the Davis Cup, Wimbledon, the Next Gen ATP Finals, and Laver Cup, none of which distributed ranking points. As part of international sports' reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ATP, the WTA, the ITF, and the four Grand Slam tournaments jointly announced on 1 March that players from Belarus and Russia would not be allowed to play in tournaments under the names or flags of their countries, but would remain eligible to play events until further notice. On 20 May 2022, the ATP, ITF, and WTA announced that ranking points would not be awarded for Wimbledon, due to the All England Club's decision to prohibit players from Belarus or Russia from participating in the tournament.
