The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (abbreviated as BFPNG) is the governing body of basketball in Papua New Guinea. Formed in the early 1960s, it is based in Port Moresby. BFPNG is a member of FIBA [2] and FIBA Oceania.
The federation is responsible for Papua New Guinea's national basketball teams including its senior teams and their age-division teams. It also manages both the Port Moresby Basketball League (PMBL) for men and Port Moresby Women's Basketball League (PMWBL) for women. [3]
A basketball governing body for the then Territory of Papua and New Guinea was established in the early 1960s to cater for a men's national team to participate at the inaugural South Pacific Games (now Pacific Games) in Suva, Fiji in 1963. It was in 1963, during the year of the first South Pacific Games, when the federation was affiliated to FIBA. [4]
As of 2020, BFPNG has associations in 11 out of the 22 provinces of Papua New Guinea including the National Capital District, Morobe, Milne Bay, Western, Gulf, East New Britain, New Ireland, Central, Western Highlands, Oro and Southern Highlands. [3]

Port Moresby, also referred to as Pom City or simply Moresby, is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. It is one of the largest cities in the southwestern Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand. It is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua, on the south-western coast of the Papuan Peninsula of the island of New Guinea. The city emerged as a trade centre in the second half of the 19th century. During World War II, it was a prime objective for conquest by the Imperial Japanese forces during 1942–43 as a staging point and air base to cut off Australia from Southeast Asia and the Americas.
