The Basketball Federation of India is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India. It is responsible for the development and promotion of the sports authority of India at all levels. The national team of India is known as the Indian Cagers. [1]

History

BFI manages all the national-level basketball operations in India and sports authority of India is also undertaking basketball federation of India. It is involved in organizing training camps and national tournaments, and in preparing Indian teams for both men's and women's international competitions in various age categories.

First national level tournaments were organized in India in 1934. The India national basketball team became a member of FIBA in 1936. The governing body, BFI, was formed in 1950. The current president of BFI is Aadhav Arjuna. [2] Poonam Mahajan was the first female president of BFI. [3]

As of May 2024, BFI had a contract with Captains Professional Basketball League (CPBL) for the management of a professional basketball league. A contract dispute occurred when BFI issued a new tender notice. [4] As of June 2024, BFI was embroiled in a legal battle with the Indian National Basketball League (INBL). [5]

    Recognition

    The Indian basketball players have also won several trophies for their country. There are 17 Indian basketball players who have been honored by the Government of India through the Arjuna Award. [6] Two players have been bestowed with Dhyan Chand Awards for lifetime achievement. [6]

    Poonam Mahajan is an Indian politician and a former Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Mumbai North Central, Constituency, Maharashtra. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She has served as the National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, from December 2016 to September 2020. Mahajan was the President of the Basketball Federation of India, the first female to hold this position. In addition, she currently serves as Chair of the Maharashtra State Animal Welfare Board.

    India has a history of sports dating back to the Vedic period, with Western sports having been imported during British rule. Cricket is the most popular spectator sport; it generates the highest television viewership, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) being the most-followed league in the country. Football has also gained popularity, with the Indian Super League (ISL) being the highest level of domestic football, and the national team winning multiple gold medals at the Asian and South Asian Games. Additional football accomplishments include India having reached the Groupstage of the 1960 Olympics, qualified for the 1950 FIFA World Cup, and won the SAFF Championship. India has also had success in field hockey, winning the World Cup and multiple medals in the Olympic Games. Sports such as golf, rugby, boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts, motorsport, wrestling, and basketball are featured throughout the country.

    In India, basketball is a popular sport with a multiple club league system, as well as state and national teams. Indian basketball made significant improvements, most notably in 2015, making them one of the top emerging continental teams.

    Prashanti Singh is a shooting guard for the Indian national women's basketball team. She is first basketball player in India conferred with National Civilian Award Padma Shri in 2019. She has been honoured with the Arjuna Award by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India in 2017. She has also been conferred with the prestigious Rani Laxmi Bai Bravery Award 2016–17 in the field of sports by Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Nivia's basketball has received certification from FIBA, the International Basketball Federation. Nivia Sports has established a strategic partnership with the Women's Handball League (WHL) to collaborate on initiatives that support the development of women's handball. Nivia has been named the official ball partner for the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). This partnership designates Nivia Sports's Football Shastra 2.0 as the official ball for the league over a three-year period, starting with the 2024 season. In June 2024, Nivia entered into a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA), securing the role of exclusive provider for sportswear and footballs. Under the agreement, Nivia is tasked with supplying footballs and kits for national football championships and district-level events, totaling 1,030 footballs.
