Canada Basketball is the governing body for basketball in Canada. Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, the federation is a full member of FIBA and governs Canadian basketball at the international, professional, and amateur levels, including: the men's and women's national teams, 3x3 basketball, the Canadian Elite Basketball League, and youth organizations. Founded in 1923, some of the influential Canada Basketball Alumni include Steve Nash, Leo Rautins, Stacey Dales, and Lars Hansen. [2] Canada Basketball launched the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program in September, 2007. Basketball is the fastest growing sport in Canada, and attracts many young Canadians from all backgrounds. In May 2012, Canada Basketball named Steve Nash the General Manager of the Senior Men's National Program. Canada Basketball hired Jay Triano to coach its Senior Men's National Team in August 2012, and hired Lisa Thomaidis as the head coach of the Senior Women's Program in March 2013.
The Council Of Excellence is designed to strengthen the game of basketball in Canada as to propel Canadian Basketball back to international prominence. The Council Of Excellence includes, Jay Triano, Steve Nash, Maurizio Gherardini, Glen Grunwald, Don McCrae, Kathy Shields, Ken Shields, Steve Konchalski, and Sylvia Sweeney. [4]
On March 5, 2019, Canada Basketball promoted Executive Vice President / Assistant General Manager Rowan Barrett to General Manager, while Steve Nash would transition to a role of Senior Advisor, effective immediately. [5] Barrett's first move was to hire Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse to coach the national men's team at the 2019 FIBA World Cup with the hopes of qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Canada Basketball withdrew its Men's national team from FIBA AmeriCup qualifying games against Cuba on 29 November 2020 and against the US Virgin Islands on 30 November 2020, on the advice of medical experts due to risks posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As a consequence on 20 January 2021 the International Basketball Federation announced sanctions against Canada Basketball consisting of a 160,000 Swiss francs fine and docking the Men's national team a point in the standings. On June 27, 2023, Sacramento Kings assistant coach Jordi Fernández was hired to replace Nick Nurse as Team Canada's head coach. [9]
The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto. The Raptors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at Scotiabank Arena, which it shares with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 1995 as part of the NBA's expansion into Canada, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. Since the 2001–02 season, the Raptors have been the only Canadian-based team in the league, as the Grizzlies relocated from Vancouver to Memphis, Tennessee.
Stephen John Nash is a Canadian professional basketball coach and former player who most recently served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played 18 seasons in the NBA, where he was an eight-time All-Star and a seven-time All-NBA selection. Nash was a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player while playing for the Phoenix Suns.

Leo Rytis Rautins is a Canadian broadcaster, former professional basketball player and the former head coach of the Canadian men's national basketball team. Rautins played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) drafted in the first round of the 1983 NBA draft, by the Philadelphia 76ers. Rautins' NBA career was waylaid by injury. After a brief retirement, Rautins returned to basketball and played in European professional leagues from 1985 until 1992. He has been a broadcaster for the Toronto Raptors since the team's inception in 1995.
Nicholas David Nurse is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He previously served as head coach for the Toronto Raptors, whom he led to an NBA championship in 2019 and with whom he was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2020.
Bryan Paul Colangelo is an American basketball executive who was the former general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He also served as president of basketball operations for Philadelphia and Toronto. He is the son of Phoenix sports mogul Jerry Colangelo. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and applied economics. He was the 2005 and 2007 recipient of the NBA Executive of the Year Award.
Howard James "Jay" Triano is a Canadian basketball coach and former professional player, who is currently an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He previously served as the head coach of the NBA's Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns. A former Canada national team player who competed in two Olympics, he has also had two stints as head coach of the national team.

Kenneth William Daniel Shields, is a former Canadian basketball coach. He is a four-time CIAU coach of the year recipient. When he retired from university coaching, he held the most wins in Canadian university men's basketball history, during which time he won a record 7-straight national championships with the University of Victoria. He is also the former head coach of the Canada men's national team.

Dave Smart is a Canadian college basketball coach who is the head coach of the Pacific Tigers men's basketball team, in Stockton, California. Regarded as the most successful Canadian university coach of all time, Smart was the head coach of the Carleton Ravens from 1999 to 2019, leading them to 13 Canadian Interuniversity Sport/U Sports national championships. During his 18 seasons at Carleton, he also led the Ravens to 11 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships — the most by any coach in conference history. Smart has also served as an assistant coach with the Canadian men's national team on multiple occasions, working with head coaches Leo Rautins and Jay Triano.
