Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City

Bedford–Stuyvesant, colloquially known as Bed–Stuy, is a neighborhood in the northern section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Bedford–Stuyvesant is bordered by Flushing Avenue to the north, Classon Avenue to the west, Broadway to the east, and Atlantic Avenue to the south. The main shopping street, Fulton Street runs east–west the length of the neighborhood and intersects high-traffic north–south streets including Bedford Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, and Stuyvesant Avenue. Bedford–Stuyvesant contains four smaller neighborhoods: Bedford, Stuyvesant Heights, Ocean Hill, and Weeksville. Part of Clinton Hill was once considered part of Bedford–Stuyvesant.

The Office of the Lord Lieutenant was created during the reign of Henry VIII (1509–1547), taking over the military duties of the Sheriffs and control of the military forces of the Crown. From 1569 there was provision for the appointment of Deputy Lieutenants, and in 1662 the Lord-Lieutenant was given entire control of the militia. The Forces Act of 1871 transferred this function back to the Crown, and in 1921, the office lost its power to call upon men of the County to fight in case of need. Since 1711 all the Lord Lieutenants have also been Custos Rotulorum of Devon.

Taconic Correctional Facility is a medium security women's prison in Bedford Hills, New York that is operated by the New York State Department of Corrections. It is associated with the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a maximum security women's prison directly across the street from Taconic. In 1901 it opened as the 'New York State Reformatory for Women' between the ages of 15 and 30. The then Department of Corrections took over the administration of the reformatory in 1926 and, in 1933 it was merged it with the newly opened 'Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for women'. For the next four decades, the reformatory operated as part of Bedford Hills, still the state's only maximum-security prison for females. In 1973, Taconic began operations as an autonomous medium-security prison. During 1971 and 1972, Bedford Hills was a correctional facility with separate male and female units. In 1973 the male inmates were transferred before the unit closed in June; the unit reopened in December as the Taconic Correctional Facility.
