Bengaluru Cantonment railway station, also known as Bengaluru Cant (station code: BNC [1] ) is one of the four important railway stations serving the city of Bengaluru and it is located in the locality of Vasanth Nagar and adjoins Fraser Town, Benson Town and Shivajinagar. [2] [3] The Station started operations in 1864, with the launch of the Bengaluru Cantonment – Jolarpettai train services by the Madras Railway. The train line was broad-gauge and 149 km long, connecting the Bengaluru Cantonment with Vellore district. [4] A total of 119 passenger trains start/end/pass through Bengaluru Cantonment railway station. [5] Total 499 stations are directly connected to Bengaluru Cantonment railway station via these 269 passenger trains. [6]

Facilities

Amenities available at the station include Passenger Reservation Centre (PRS), [7] Waiting halls, [8] AC VIP lounge, [8] enquiry counters, essential stalls, Food plaza, ATM along with the other basic facilities. [9] Hand trolley facility are provided to porters for carrying luggage of passengers with no change in fare charged by the porters. [10]

Considering the need of medical services at the station by Bengaluru Division of the South Western Railway opened a clinic in February, 2014 which would provide free emergency medical services for the train travellers. [11]

In the future, the Namma Metro's Pink Line will connect the Cantonment Railway station between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara. A skywalk is proposed to connect the metro station with the railway station.

Station Layout

This station consists of 7 platforms and 8 tracks which are connected by foot overbridge for passengers to board the express trains at the respective platforms. These platforms are built to accumulate 24-coach express trains.

Expansion

Bengaluru Cantonment station got a face lift with the remodelled entrance and ticketing counter behind the platform 2 which was opened to public in January 2011 by K Muniyappa, Union minister of state for railways. [12]

Green Line of Namma Metro was built along with the Purple Line during the first phase of construction of the metro rail system for the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The 30.5 km (19.0 mi) line connects Madavara in the northwest to Silk Institute in the south. Bengaluru East railway station, also known as Bangalore East railway station, is an old British-era railway station surrounded by Pottery Road, Kumaraswamy Naidu Road, Murgesha Mudaliar Road and Kenchappa Road. It is a small quaint station located in Fraser Town, Bangalore Cantonment. This station is very convenient for residents traveling towards or returning from Kolar Gold Fields or Madras. Express and Mail trains did not stop here until the 1920s. The station is now renovated with a larger platform. Adjacent to the railway station is the Bangalore East Football Grounds, which nowadays is more used for playing cricket. Well-known cartoonist Paul Fernandes remembers as a young boy befriending train drivers at this station and getting grease for his bicycle.

Kengeri railway station is a major railway station on the Mysuru–Bengaluru railway line within the city limits of Bengaluru in the Indian State of Karnataka. It is about 10 km south-west to the centre of city. It is an important railway station within the city limits that include KSR Bengaluru, Yeshwantpur Jn. and Bengaluru Cantt, SMVT Bengaluru, Yelahanka, Krishnarajapuram and Whitefield. It has 4 platforms. It is well connected, with a metro station on the Purple line nearby.

The Pink Line of Namma Metro is under construction and will form part of the metro rail network for the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The 21.25 km (13.20 mi) line connects Kalena Agrahara station on Bannerghatta Road in the south with Nagawara station on Outer Ring Road in the north. The Pink Line is mostly underground but also has a 6.98 km (4.34 mi) elevated section and a 0.48 km (0.30 mi) at-grade (surface) section. There are 18 stations on the line, including 12 underground and 6 elevated ones. Pink Line will have an interchange with the Purple Line at MG Road station. It will also have interchanges with the Yellow line at Jayadeva Hospital station and with the Blue Line at Nagawara. Both these lines are under construction.

The 22665 / 22666 KSR Bengaluru City – Coimbatore Uday Express is the 1st Uday Express series double-decker AC chair train of the Indian Railways connecting Bangalore City in Karnataka and Coimbatore Junction in Tamil Nadu. It is currently being operated with 22665/22666 train numbers on all days in a week basis. It operates at an average speed of 65 km/h.
