The Billboard Touring Conference and Awards is an annual meeting sponsored by Billboard magazine which also honors the top international live entertainment industry artists and professionals. Established in 2004, [1] it has thus been described as "part industry conference, part awards show". [2]

<i>Billboard</i> (magazine) American music magazine

Billboard is an American entertainment media brand owned by the Billboard-Hollywood Reporter Media Group, a division of Eldridge Industries. It publishes pieces involving news, video, opinion, reviews, events, and style, and is also known for its music charts, including the Hot 100 and Billboard 200, tracking the most popular songs and albums in different genres. It also hosts events, owns a publishing firm, and operates several TV shows.

Many of the awards are based on Billboard's Boxscore chart tracking concert, comedy and other live entertainment attendance and gate receipts, and on real box office performance. [3] As a result, the awards often equate to commercial success. [2] The "top tour" superlative award is also given on the basis of fan polls. The "Legend of Live" and Humanitarian awards are given to individuals for their ongoing contributions to the live entertainment touring industry. [3]

History

The conference and awards are held in November of each year, traditionally at the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan in New York City but since 2016 at hotels in the Los Angeles area. The conference usually takes place over two days and is attended by figures from the music and concert industry. [4] Each year features a keynote speaker from the performance industry, who in the past have included the likes of Gene Simmons of Kiss [5] and 3 Doors Down. [4]

Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in California and the second most populous city in the United States, after New York City. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. The city is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, Hollywood and the entertainment industry, and its sprawling metropolis.

While recorded music has an established awards structure headed by the Grammy Awards and also featuring the American Music Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards, live performance music has not had the same. The Billboard Touring Awards are an attempt to fill that gap. Billboard previously attempted to enter the awards arena for recorded music with the charts-based Billboard Music Award, which lasted from 1990 through 2006, returning in 2011. Those awards featured two slots for Concert Venue Award and Touring Venue Award, but were not otherwise live-performance-based.

<i>Billboard</i> Music Award award

The Billboard Music Award is an honor given out annually by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart covering the music business. The Billboard Music Awards show had been held annually since 1990 and the event was formerly held in December until it went dormant in 2006. The awards returned in 2011 and are now held annually in May as the last of the Big Three major music awards. The 2018 Billboard Music Awards aired live on NBC on May 20.

Award names and awards given themselves have varied somewhat each year, with for example the Top Comedy Tour and Concert Marketing and Promotion Awards being added in 2007 and the Fans Choice being added in 2008, both being determined by fan vote. [6] There are typically three nominees in each category. [7]

Repeat winners in the awards have been common, with country artist Kenny Chesney winning Top Package Tour six consecutive years through 2009 [8] and Bonnaroo Music Festival winning four times as well starting in 2004. [9]

Many of these have also charted within the Top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100, making him one of the most successful crossover country artists. He has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Bonnaroo Music Festival Annual music festival

The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is an annual four-day music festival developed and produced by Superfly Presents and AC Entertainment. Since its first year in 2002, it has been held at what is now Great Stage Park on a 650-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. The festival typically starts on the second Thursday in June and lasts four days. Main attractions of this festival are the multiple stages featuring live music with a diverse array of musical styles including indie rock, classic rock, world music, hip hop, jazz, americana, bluegrass, country music, folk, gospel, reggae, pop, electronic, and other alternative music. Musical acts play from around noon until 3:00am or later.

The fourteenth annual edition of the awards took place on November 15, 2017, at the Montage Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, California, in proceedings hosted by Hasan Minhaj. [10]

The thirteenth annual Billboard Touring Awards took place on a single day, November 9, 2016, this time at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. [11]

2015

The twelfth annual Billboard Touring Awards took place on a single day, November 19, 2015, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. [12]

2014

The eleventh annual Billboard Touring Awards took place on over two days in November 19–20, 2014, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. [13]

2013

The tenth annual Billboard Touring Awards took place on over two days in November 13 and 14, 2013, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. [14]

2012

The ninth annual Billboard Touring Awards again took place on over two days in November 2012 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, despite the aftereffects of Superstorm Sandy. [15] [16] [17] [18]

2011

The eighth annual Billboard Touring Awards took place on over two days in November 2011 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. [19]

2010

The seventh annual Billboard Touring Awards took place on November 3 and 4, 2010, at the Sheraton Hotel in New York City, NY. [20]

2009

The sixth annual Billboard Touring Awards took place November 4 and 5, 2009, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. [22] The winners were: [8]

The 2007 awards were held on November 15, 2007. Awards were based on box office performance from January 1, 2007 through September 30, 2007. [23]

The 2006 awards were held on November 9, 2006 in New York City. [4]

2005

The 2005 awards were termed the Billboard Roadworks '05 Touring Awards. [7] [24]

2004

The first annual Billboard Touring Awards were held November 8–9, 2004, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, [1] [25] as the culmination of the first Billboard Backstage Pass Conference. [26] The winners were announced in advance of the awards ceremony. [26] The awards were not well known or publicized much during this time.

The Come On Over Tour was the debut concert tour by Canadian singer-songwriter Shania Twain. Visiting North America, Australia and Europe, the tour supported Twain's third studio album Come On Over (1997). Deemed one of the most anticipated tours of the 1990s, the trek became one of the highest-grossing tours in both 1998 and 1999, along with becoming one of the biggest tours by a female musician of any genre. The tour was seen by over two million spectators and earned over 80 million dollars. Additional accolades include being named the "Country Tour of the Year" in 1998 and 1999 by Pollstar Concert Industry Awards. Supporting Twain on the tour was family band Leahy and country artist Shane Minor. The tour was sponsored by Gitano Jeans.

Private Dancer Tour is a 1985 concert tour by the American singer Tina Turner. In conjunction with her multi-platinum selling album Private Dancer, the tour helped to establish Turner as a major solo artist and live performer and is often considered one of the best comebacks in music history.

The venue largely replaced the Paladium Amphitheater at Carowinds as the premier outdoor venue in the Metrolina region. It was renamed under a new naming-rights deal with PNC Bank. It has a capacity of 20,500 and was built for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, to allow them to play in an outdoor venue during the summer months. The Harem World Tour was the third worldwide concert tour by English soprano singer Sarah Brightman following the release of the Harem album (2003). x Tour (Ed Sheeran)

The x Tour was the second world concert tour by English singer-songwriter and musician, Ed Sheeran, in support of his second album, ×. The tour began in Osaka, Japan on 6 August 2014, and continued through Europe, the Americas, Oceania and Asia until 12 December 2015, where the tour ended in New Zealand. Sheeran planned 180 shows. In June 2015, the singer announced a documentary would be filmed during the tour's three sold-out dates, 10–12 July 2015, at 80,000-person capacity Wembley Stadium.

Adele Live 2016 concert tour

Adele Live 2016 was the third concert tour by British singer Adele in support of her third studio album, 25. It began on 29 February 2016, in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the SSE Arena, continued throughout Western Europe, North America and Oceania. It was originally scheduled to conclude on 2 July 2017, in London, England, at Wembley Stadium, however on 30 June Adele announced via social media that she had regretfully cancelled her final two performances upon medical advice due to vocal injuries. It is unlikely the performances will be postponed to a later date.
