Blast Wind [a] is a 1997 vertically scrolling shooter video game developed and published by Technosoft for the Sega Saturn. In the game, the player controls one of two artificial life forms piloting ships to fight the invading Gorn culture. The player can take an alternate path by pressing switches in each stage.
Blast Wind was created by staff members who would later work on Thunder Force V . Produced by Naosuke Arai, it was originally developed as an arcade game, but the plan changed during production and was postponed until it was released as an original title on the Saturn. The soundtrack was composed by Hyakutaro Tsukumo. Working Designs planned to release the game in North America under their "Spaz" label, but cancelled the deal with Technosoft and dropped support for the Saturn following a dispute with Sega. Although it was not officially published outside Japan, an English fan translation was released in 2024.
Blast Wind received average reviews, with critics praising the frenetic pace, soundtrack, and controls, while others were mixed regarding the overall presentation and path-switching mechanic. Some reviewers also criticized the game's graphics, its short length, and low difficulty.
Blast Wind is a vertically scrolling shooter game. [1] [2] [3] The premise takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth after a nuclear holocaust nearly decimated the entire population. A handful of people managed to escape thanks to a prophet named Noa who gathered them aboard an ark and emerged after the residual radiation dissipated to build a new civilization. However, they were attacked by an invading culture called Gorn, who survived the nuclear winter by migrating within the Earth's crust and evolving before re-emerging on the surface. Humanity unearths an ancient weapons program as a last resort to fight against Gorn. [2] [4] [5] [6]
The player can choose one of two ships: Hayate [b] and Reppu [c] (piloted by the artificial life forms Kyo and Forn respectively). [3] [4] [5] Each ship has a forward-firing shot, a homing shot, and bombs capable of damaging enemies on-screen when deployed. [3] [5] [7] The weapons can be upgraded by collecting power-up icons (P) that drop from defeated enemies, which surround the player's ship with lightning bolts that damage enemies and grant temporary invincibility. Blast Wind was developed by Technosoft, best known for the Thunder Force series. [7] [8] [9] It was developed by personnel who would later work on Thunder Force V . [10] Naosuke Arai oversaw production as head of development under the pseudonym "Yunker Matai". [8] [11] Taisuke Kanasaki, who later worked at Cing as director and character designer for Another Code: Two Memories , Wish Room: Angel's Memory, and Last Window: Mayonaka no Yakusoku , participated in the introductory sequence during his time at Technosoft. Technosoft published Blast Wind in Japan on January 17, 1997. [16] [17] Working Designs planned to release the game in North America as a bundle along with the Thunder Force Gold Pack compilations and Hyper Duel under their "Spaz" label. Following a dispute at E3 1997 with Sega of America, Working Designs cancelled the deal with Technosoft and withdrew support for the Saturn. Blast Wind received average reviews. [1] [23] [16] [24] [25] The game reached into the top ten best-selling Sega Saturn titles of that week and received a score of 8.1351 out of 10 in a 2000 readers' poll conducted by the Japanese Sega Saturn Magazine , ranking among Saturn titles at the number 351 spot. [26] [27] Two Saturn Fan editors recommended it for those who enjoy retro-style shooters and praised the catchy soundtrack, but noted its lack of innovative mechanics, lackluster presentation, and short length. [24] Reviewers from the Japanese Sega Saturn Magazine commended the game's frenetic pace, but found the branching paths to be underdeveloped and criticized its dated mechanics, specifically the lack of uniformity in enemies and monotonous power-ups. François Garnier of Consoles + praised the game's overall presentation, lack of slowdown, soundscapes, and branching paths, but felt that it was a bit easy and graphically lacking. [1] Fun Generation's Holger Gößmann and Stefan Hellert considered the game very playable and gave positive comments about its precise controls and music, but found it visually average and saw its short duration as a flaw. [23] Hardcore Gaming 101 's Nick Gibson wrote that the solid sprite artwork and energetic soundtrack encouraged replayability when playing for points. Gibson found the switching mechanic interesting, but noted the game's short stages, low difficulty, and restrictive weapon system. [4] Retro Gamer 's Darran Jones called Blast Wind a very entertaining shooter, citing its exceptional music and the ability to find new paths through a stage via switches, but felt it was rather ordinary compared to other Technosoft shooters such as Hyper Duel and Thunder Force V due to its chunky graphics and simple scoring system. Technosoft was a Japanese video game developer and publisher based headquartered in Sasebo, Nagasaki. Also known as "Tecno Soft", the company was founded in February 1980 as Sasebo Microcomputer Center, before changing its name to Technosoft in 1982. The company primarily dealt with software for Japanese personal computers, including graphic toolsets and image processing software. Technosoft's first venture into the video game market was Snake & Snake, released in 1982, before seeing success with titles such as Thunder Force (1983) and Plasma Line (1984).
DoDonPachi is a vertically scrolling bullet hell video game developed by Cave and published by Atlus in 1997. Twin Cobra II is a vertically scrolling shooter arcade video game developed by Takumi Corporation and published in 1995 by Taito in Japan, Asia and Europe. It is the sequel to Twin Cobra from 1987. Road Blaster (ロードブラスター) is an interactive film game developed by Data East, featuring animation by Toei Animation, originally released in Japan as a LaserDisc-based arcade game in 1985. The player assumes the role of a vigilante who pursues a biker gang responsible for his wife's death in a modified sports car. The game was ported home formats such as the MSX and Sharp X1, Sega CD, LaserActive, PlayStation and Sega Saturn. Gate of Thunder is a 1992 scrolling shooter video game developed by Red Company and published by Hudson Soft for the TurboGrafx-CD. It was the first game released in North America to support the Super CD-ROM² format and served as one of the pack-in games for the TurboDuo, a two-in-one system which runs both TurboGrafx-CD and TurboGrafx-16 titles, where it was bundled with Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge and Bomberman on the same disc. In the game, the player controls the Hunting Dog space fighter craft, piloted by space cop Hawk. Hyper Duel is a 1993 horizontal-scrolling shooter video game developed by Technosoft and released for arcades in Japan by Taito. It was later ported to the Sega Saturn in 1996. In the game, the player controls one of three characters piloting transformable fighters called Buster Gears, whose mission is to recover or destroy a prototype unit stolen by terrorist forces. The player can switch between a compact spaceship and a humanoid mecha. The game runs on the TEC442-A arcade system board.
Lords of Thunder is a horizontally scrolling shooter developed by Red Company and published in 1993 by Turbo Technologies and Hudson Soft for the TurboDuo. It is the unofficial follow-up to Gate of Thunder. The player controls the knight Landis, donning the armor of his ancestor Drak on a confrontation against Zaggart of Garuda Empire, who resurrected the evil god Deoric, and his six dark generals across the land of Mistral.
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari is a 1997 graphic adventure video game developed by Givro Corporation and published by Enix for the Sega Saturn. The last game to be created by Givro prior to their dissolution in 1998, it takes place on a mysterious island. Players assume the role of a dragon named Gaūpu to meet various creatures inhabiting the location, while harnessing seven legendary winds to overcome obstacles. It received positive reviews, with high praise given towards its hand-drawn visuals.
Override is a 1991 vertically scrolling shooter video game developed by Sting Entertainment and published by Data East for the PC Engine. It was later ported to the X68000, self-published by Sting as Last Battalion.
The Wing of Madoola is a 1986 action-platform video game developed and published by Sunsoft for the Family Computer. It stars Lucia, a magic-wielding warrior of the Rameru clan. Darutos, a descendant of the Rameru line, found the Wing of Madoola statue and used it to build a demonic fortress and summon demons to conquer the world. Lucia must retrieve the statue and stop Darutos. Throughout the journey, the player explores and search for items and power-ups to increase Lucia's attributes, while fighting enemies and defeating bosses.

The game follows a government agent and a private investigator investigating a series of bizarre cases which are later connected to one another.
Cotton 2: Magical Night Dreams is a 1997 scrolling shooter arcade video game developed by Success and published by Tecmo. The fourth installment in the Cotton franchise, it is the arcade sequel to Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams. In the game, players assume the role of either the titular young witch or her rival Appli who, alongside their companions Silk and Needle, sets out on a quest to defeat several monsters and retrieve the missing "Bluewater Willow" candy to Pumpkin Kingdom. Its gameplay is similar to the first game, consisting of shooting mixed with fighting and role-playing game-esque elements using a main three-button configuration. It ran on the ST-V hardware.
Thunder Force Gold Pack is a 1996 video game compilation duology developed and published by Technosoft for the Sega Saturn. Part of the Thunder Force series, the first release includes Thunder Force II (1989) and Thunder Force III (1990), while the second release includes Thunder Force AC (1990) and Thunder Force IV (1992). In each game, players assume the role of Galaxy Federation pilots taking control of a space fighter craft to defeat the Orn Empire and a powerful threat called Vios. Both compilations were released to gauge interest for the then-upcoming Thunder Force V. Each compilation were met with mixed reception from critics since their release.
Seirei Senshi Spriggan is a 1991 vertically scrolling shooter video game developed by Compile and published by Naxat Soft in Japan for the PC Engine CD-ROM². In the game, the player assume control of Jega and Rikart piloting the Spriggan in order to protect their country from the Buraizubara empire.
Spriggan Mark 2: Re-Terraform Project is a 1992 horizontally scrolling shooter video game developed by Compile and published in Japan by Naxat Soft for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM². It is a follow-up to Seirei Senshi Spriggan (1991). The game follows lieutenant Greg Erwin piloting the armed Bartholomeu armor and later the Spriggan Mark 2 in a war between two opposing forces to decide the fate of a space colony at Mars. The player must fight against waves of enemies to avoid collision with their projectiles and other obstacles, while intermissions between characters during gameplay advances the storyline.
Undeadline is a 1989 vertically scrolling shooter video game developed and originally published by T&E Soft for the MSX2/MSX2+ home computers. The game follows demon hunter Tianren, gathering information in order to unravel the mystery surrounding the demonic beings and SIVA corporation. Gameplay features a growing party led by Tianren navigating the city, talking with non-playable characters, exploring complex areas, and taking part in turn-based battles against enemies.
Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butōden is a 1995 fighting video game developed by Tose and published by Bandai for the Sega Saturn. Based upon Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball franchise, its gameplay is similar to the Super Butōden sub-series, consisting of one-on-one fights featuring special moves, as well as five playable modes including one featuring Mr. Satan as the main character.
