Bradfield is a suburb in South Western Sydney, north of Bringelly. It was gazetted as a new suburb on 31 March 2023. [1]
Bradfield was previously the name of a suburb on the North Shore of Sydney, between 1924 and 1977. It has since been absorbed by neighbouring Lindfield.
The name commemorates Dr John Job Crew Bradfield, who oversaw design and construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge between 1913 and 1932. [2]
In March 2021, the NSW Government announced that a 100-hectare section of Bringelly, referred to planning documents as 'Aerotropolis Core', would be named in Dr Bradfield's honour. Bradfield is adjacent to the construction site for the Western Sydney Airport in Badgerys Creek, and is intended to emerge as the city's third commercial centre behind Sydney and Parramatta. The name was chosen by a committee following a call for public submissions in 2020. Announcing the new name, Premier Gladys Berejiklian, said "The name Bradfield is synonymous with delivering game-changing infrastructure". [2]

John Job Crew Bradfield was an Australian engineer best known as the chief proponent of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, of which he oversaw both the design and construction. He worked for the New South Wales Department of Public Works from 1891 to 1933. He was the first recipient of an engineering doctorate from the University of Sydney, in 1924. Other notable projects with which he was associated include the Cataract Dam, the Burrinjuck Dam, and Brisbane's Story Bridge. The Harbour Bridge formed only one component of the City Circle, Bradfield's grand scheme for the railways of central Sydney, a modified version of which was completed after his death. He was also the designer of an unbuilt irrigation project known as the Bradfield Scheme, which proposed that remote areas of western Queensland and north-eastern South Australia could be made fertile by the diversion of rivers from North Queensland.
Milsons Point railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the North Shore line, serving the Sydney suburb of Milsons Point in New South Wales, Australia. It is served by Sydney Trains T1 North Shore line services. The station is located above ground, accessible via stairs and a lift, in Milsons Point, in the North Sydney Council local government area of New South Wales, Australia. Warringah Freeway is a 3.5-kilometre (2.2 mi) divided freeway in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia that is part of the Sydney Orbital Network. The primary function of the freeway is to provide an alternative high-grade route from the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and Bradfield Highway at Milsons Point to the A8 and Gore Hill Freeway. Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport, previously known as Sydney Metro Greater West, is a rapid transit rail project currently under-construction in Greater Western Sydney. The project involves the construction of a 23-kilometre (14 mi) line as part of the Sydney Metro system. The line will operate between St Marys, where the line will connect to the Main Western railway line, and Badgerys Creek Aerotropolis at Bradfield via the Western Sydney Airport. It is intended to provide public transport for the upcoming Western Sydney Airport. Construction of the line started in December 2022 and is expected to be completed in late 2026 in time for the opening of the airport.
Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan (WSIP) is an A$4.1 billion 10-year road investment program in Western Sydney, New South Wales, jointly funded by the federal government and the New South Wales state government. Bradfield railway station is a proposed station on the Western Sydney Airport line that will serve Bradfield. Scheduled to open in 2026, it will be the terminus of the line.
Kathleen M. Butler was nicknamed the "Godmother of Sydney Harbour Bridge" and also known as the "Bridge Girl". As the first person appointed to Chief Engineer J. J. C. Bradfield's team, as his Confidential Secretary,, she managed the international tendering process and oversaw the development of the technical plans, travelling to London in 1924 to supervise the project in the offices of Dornan's, the company which won the tender. At the time it was built, Sydney Harbour Bridge was the largest arch bridge in the world, with the build expected to take six years to complete. Her unusual role garnered much interest in the press in Australia and Britain.
