The 2016 California State Senate election were held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, with the primary election on June 7, 2016. Voters in the 20 odd-numbered districts of the California State Senate elected their representatives. The elections coincided with the elections for other offices, including for U.S. President and the state assembly.

California's State Senate districts are numbered 1st through 40th, generally in north-to-south order.

Contents

Only one seat changed hands: the 29th district, which belonged to outgoing former Republican Minority Leader Bob Huff. As a result of the pickup by Democrat Josh Newman, the California Democratic Party regained a two-thirds supermajority in the chamber that it had previously lost in 2014.

California's 29th State Senate district is one of 40 California State Senate districts. It is currently represented by Republican Ling Ling Chang of Diamond Bar.

Bob Huff U.S. politician

Robert S. Huff is an American businessman and politician, who was the California State Senate Minority Leader and Senate Republican Leader from January 5, 2012 until August 27, 2015. He represented the Senate's 29th District, which includes portions of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties.

Josh Newman is an American politician who formerly served in the California State Senate until being recalled in June 2018. A Democrat, he represented the 29th Senate District, which encompasses parts of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties.

Ling Ling Chang Member of the California State Assembly

Ling Ling Chang is an American politician who is currently serving in the California State Senate, representing the 29th district, encompassing parts of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties. She is a Republican. Prior to being elected to the state legislature, she was a Diamond Bar City Councilwoman. In 2016, Chang was a candidate for California's 29th State Senate district, losing the general election narrowly to Democrat Josh Newman. Chang would later be elected in the same district on a recall ballot for the race to replace Newman if he were recalled over his Gas Tax vote. The election resulted in a recall of Newman with Chang winning the most votes on the second ballot. She previously served in the California State Assembly.
