The 2018 California State Treasurer election will be held on November 6, 2018, to elect the State Treasurer of California. Incumbent Democratic Treasurer John Chiang is not running for re-election to a second term and instead ran for governor. [1]

California State Treasurer position in state government

The California State Treasurer is responsible for the state's investment and finance. The post has narrower responsibilities and authority than the California State Controller. Some of the responsibilities include issuing bonds and notes for the state, and trustee, as well as registrar and paying agent for all general obligation bonds and certain revenue bonds investment of temporarily idle state money. The administration of the state's budgets, financial analyses and planning, money allocation, and economic research is under the California Department of Finance.

John Chiang (California politician) American politician

John Chiang is an American politician. A Democrat, he served as the 33rd California State Treasurer from 2014 to 2019. He previously served as California State Controller from 2007 to 2015 and on the California Board of Equalization from 1997 to 2007. On May 17, 2016, Chiang announced his campaign for Governor of California in the 2018 race but did not qualify for the runoff.

The California Public Utilities Commission is a regulatory agency that regulates privately owned public utilities in the state of California, including electric power, telecommunications, natural gas and water companies. In addition, the CPUC regulates common carriers, including household goods movers, passenger transportation companies such as limousine services, and rail crossing safety. The CPUC has headquarters in the Civic Center district of San Francisco, and field offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Fiona Ma American politician

Fiona Ma is an American politician and Certified Public Accountant who has been serving as the California State Treasurer since January 7, 2019. She was elected to this post on November 6, 2018 with more votes than any other candidate for Treasurer in the state's history. She served as a member of the California Board of Equalization from 2015 to 2019. Ma served in the California State Assembly (2006–2012) and on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (2002–2006).

The State Board of Equalization (BOE) is a public agency charged with tax administration and fee collection in the state of California in the United States. The authorities of the Board fall into four broad areas: sales and use taxes, property taxes, special taxes, and acting as an appellate body for franchise and income tax appeals. The BOE is the only publicly elected tax commission in the United States. The board is made up of four directly elected members, each representing a district for four-year terms, along with the State Controller, who is elected on a statewide basis, serving as the fifth member. In June 2017, Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation stripping the Board of many of its powers, returning the agency to its original core responsibilities.

Fabian Núñez is an American politician and labor union adviser. A member of the Democratic Party, he served three two-year terms as a member of the State Assembly, leaving office in late 2008. During his last two terms, Nunez was the Assembly Speaker, the 66th person to hold that position.

The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in California were held on November 6, 2018, with the primary elections being held on June 5, 2018. Voters elected the 53 U.S. Representatives from the state of California, one from each of the state's 53 congressional districts. The elections coincided with the elections of other offices, including a gubernatorial election, other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate, and various state and local elections. Democrats won in 7 congressional districts previously represented by Republicans, all of which voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016. This reduced the California House Republican delegation by half and left the Republican Party with the fewest seats in California since 1946.
