The 2018 United States Senate election in West Virginia took place on November 6, 2018, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of West Virginia, concurrently with other elections to the United States Senate, elections to the United States House of Representatives, and various state and local elections.
The United States Senate is the upper chamber of the United States Congress, which along with the United States House of Representatives—the lower chamber—comprises the legislature of the United States. The Senate chamber is located in the north wing of the Capitol, in Washington, D.C.
West Virginia is a state located in the Appalachian region in the Southern United States and is also considered to be a part of the Middle Atlantic States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is the 41st largest state by area, and is ranked 38th in population. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
The United States House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the United States Congress, the Senate being the upper chamber. Together they comprise the legislature of the United States.
On May 8, 2018, the Republican primary voters of the state nominated West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey as the Republican candidate. [1] In the general election, incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Manchin defeated Morrisey and was elected to a second full term. [2]
Patrick James Morrisey is an American politician and lawyer serving as the 34th Attorney General of West Virginia since 2013. He is a member of the Republican Party.
The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. Tracing its heritage back to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison's Democratic-Republican Party, the modern-day Democratic Party was founded around 1828 by supporters of Andrew Jackson, making it the world's oldest active political party.
Joseph Manchin III is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from West Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and the 27th secretary of state of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005.
Once a Democratic stronghold at the presidential level, West Virginia has become one of, if not the most, conservative states in the United States. In 2008, John McCain defeated Barack Obama 55-42 and In 2012, Mitt Romney defeated President Obama 62-35. In 2016, Donald Trump won the state by a greater than 40-point margin against Hillary Clinton (68-26).
John Sidney McCain III was an American politician and military officer who served as a United States Senator from Arizona from January 1987 until his death. He previously served two terms in the United States House of Representatives and was the Republican nominee for President of the United States in the 2008 election, which he lost to Barack Obama.
Barack Hussein Obama II is an American attorney and politician who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the first African American to be elected to the presidency. He previously served as a U.S. senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008.
Willard Mitt Romney is an American politician and businessman serving as the junior United States senator from Utah since January 2019. He previously served as the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and was the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 election.
However, at the statewide level, West Virginia is much friendlier to Democrats. In 2016, while President Trump won the state with nearly 70% of the vote, Jim Justice (who was a Democrat at the time, before switching his affiliation to the Republican Party) won the gubernatorial election with 49% of the vote. In 2012, which was Senator Joe Manchin’s second most recent statewide election, he won with nearly 60% of the vote against John Raese.
James Conley Justice II is an American coal mining and agriculture businessman and politician serving the 36th Governor of West Virginia since 2017. With a net worth of around $1.9 billion, he is the wealthiest person in West Virginia. He inherited a coal mining business from his father and successfully built a massive business empire with over 50 companies, including The Greenbrier, a luxury resort. Justice is one of the few billionaires from the State of West Virginia.
John Reeves Raese is an American businessman and perennial Republican Party candidate for political office. He has lost campaigns to represent West Virginia in the U.S. Senate in 1984, 2006, 2010 and 2012 and was defeated in the Republican primary in the election for Governor of West Virginia in 1988.
Paula Jean Swearengin is an American social and environmental activist and politician from West Virginia. A member of the Democratic Party, she is associated with the progressive organizations Justice Democrats and Brand New Congress. She ran against incumbent U.S. Senator Joe Manchin in the 2018 Democratic primary but was defeated, winning 30.21% of the vote.
