The 1998 California Attorney General election occurred on November 3, 1998. The primary elections took place on June 3, 1998. The Democratic nominee, Bill Lockyer, defeated the Republican nominee, Dave Stirling, for the office previously held by incumbent Dan Lungren, who chose not to seek re-election in favor of running for governor.

The California Democratic Party is the state branch of the United States Democratic Party in the state of California. The party is headquartered in Sacramento, and is led by acting-Chair Alex Gallardo-Rooker.

Bill Lockyer American politician

William Westwood Lockyer is a veteran California politician, who held elective office from 1973 to 2015, as State Treasurer of California, California Attorney General, and President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate. Described by journalistic observers as one of the state's most "colorful" and "shrewdest" public officials, he has long been known to speak his mind with an uncommon frankness that occasionally caused him political embarrassment.

The California Republican Party (CAGOP) is the California affiliate of the United States Republican Party. The party is based in Sacramento, and is led by Chairwoman Jessica Patterson.

The Secretary of State of California is the chief clerk of the U.S. State of California, overseeing a department of 500 people. The Secretary of State is elected for four year terms, like the state's other constitutional officers, and is restricted by term limits to only two terms. The current Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, took office on January 5, 2015.
