Carex Genus of flowering plants in the sedge family Cyperaceae

Carex is a vast genus of more than 2,000 species of grass-like plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges. Other members of the family Cyperaceae are also called sedges, however those of genus Carex may be called true sedges, and it is the most species-rich genus in the family. The study of Carex is known as caricology.

Carex petitiana Species of grass-like plant

Carex petitiana is a species of sedge in the family Cyperaceae that lives in swamps and bogs at altitudes of 1,800–3,600 metres (5,900–11,800 ft) in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Two subspecies are recognised:

Rhynchospora alba Species of plant

Rhynchospora alba, the white beak-sedge, is a plant in the sedge family, Cyperaceae. It is a tufted herbaceous perennial around 50 cm tall, with white inflorescences that flower in August. The fruit of the sedge is a small achene with a characteristic beak-like cap. It is dispersed by wind or falls by gravity, leading to individuals existing in tight clumps. The species favours wet, acidic and nutrient poor soils, thriving in Sphagnum-dominated bogs, but also peaty grasslands. As such it is often used as a positive indicator for bog and mire ecosystem health.

Carex canescens Species of grass-like plant

Carex canescens L. is a perennial species of plants in the family Cyperaceae growing in damp forests and wetlands. It is widespread across much of Europe, Asia, Australia, New Guinea, North America, Greenland and southern South America.

Carex magellanica subsp. irrigua Subspecies of grass-like plant

Carex magellanica subsp. irrigua is a perennial species of plants in the family Cyperaceae native to Holarctic wetlands. Common names include poor sedge, bog sedge and boreal bog sedge.

Eleocharis palustris Species of grass-like plant

Eleocharis palustris, the common spike-rush, creeping spike-rush or marsh spike-rush, is a species of mat-forming perennial flowering plants in the sedge family Cyperaceae. It grows in wetlands in Europe, North Africa, northern and central Asia and North America. Eleocharis palustris is not easily distinguished from other closely related species and is extremely variable worldwide itself. The species epithet palustris is Latin for "of the marsh" and indicates its common habitat.

Carex texensis Species of grass-like plant

Carex texensis, the Texas sedge, is a species of flowering plant in the sedge family, Cyperaceae. It is endemic to the eastern, central, and southern United States.

Carex viridula Species of grass-like plant

Carex viridula, known as little green sedge, green sedge, or greenish sedge, is a small flowering plant native to North America, Europe, Asia, and Morocco.

Carex remota Species of plant in the genus Carex

Carex remota, the remote sedge, is a species in the genus Carex, native to Europe, the Atlas Mountains in Africa, and western Asia. It is a riparian forest specialist. It is known as one of the most frequently hybridizing species of Carex, forming hybrids with C. appropinquata, C. arenaria, C. brizoides, C. canescens, C. divulsa, C. echinata, C. elongata, C. leporina, C. otrubae, C. paniculata, and C. spicata.

Carex lepidocarpa Species of plant in the genus Carex

Carex lepidocarpa, called the long-stalked yellow-sedge, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Carex, native to eastern Canada, Morocco, and most of Europe. It is a member of the Carex flava species complex.

Carex dolichostachya Species of plant in the genus Carex

Carex dolichostachya is a species of flowering plant in the sedge genus Carex, family Cyperaceae. It is native to eastern Asia; central and southeast China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, and Japan. Its popular cultivar 'Kaga-nishiki' is sold in the US by the trade designation Gold Fountains.

Carex laxiculmis Species of plant in the genus Carex

Carex laxiculmis, the creeping sedge, is a species of flowering plant in the family Cyperaceae, native to Ontario, Canada, and the central and eastern United States. As with most species of sedge, it prefers to grow in shady, wet areas. Its cultivar 'Hobb', sold under the trade designation Bunny Blue, is available from commercial nurseries.

Carex feta Species of sedge in the family Cyperaceae

Carex feta, the green-sheathed sedge or greensheath sedge, is a species of flowering plant in the family Cyperaceae, native to southwestern British Columbia in Canada, and Washington, Oregon, and California in the United States. Its chromosome number is n = 33.
