Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS), with campuses at Thiruvananthapuram and Pala in Kerala, India, is a research level institution devoted to mathematics and other related disciplines like statistics, theoretical physics, computer and information sciences. The centre was incorporated in 1977 as a non-profit scientific research and training centre under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act XII of 1955. The driving force behind the establishment of the centre was Prof. Aleyamma George, who had been Professor and Head of the Department of Statistics of University of Kerala. Since 2006, the centre is a Department of Science and Technology (India) (DST), Government of India, New Delhi Centre for Mathematical Sciences and is fully financed by DST, New Delhi. [1]

The centre is headed by a chairman, a position currently held by Dr. A Sukumaran Nair, a former vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and a Director a position now held by Dr. A.M. Mathai, emeritus professor of mathematics and statistics, McGill University, Canada. The activities of the Thiruvananthapuram Campus are coordinated by Dr. K. S. S. Nambooripad. [1]

The centre has started doing good work in its early years itself. [2] At present, several research teams are operating in the centre like Astrophysics Research Group, Fractional Calculus Research Group, Special Functions Research Group, Statistical Distribution Theory Research Group, Geometrical Probability Research Group, Stochastic Process Research Group, and Discrete Mathematics in Chemistry Research Group. History

Centre for Mathematical Sciences was established in 1977 in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. In 2002, the Pala Campus of the centre was established in a one-floor finished building donated by the Diocese of Palai in Kerala, India. In 2006, Hill Area Campus of the centre was established. The office, the library and most of the facilities are at the Pala Campus. Starting from 1985, Professor Dr. A.M. Mathai of McGill University, Canada is the director of the centre. In 2006-2007 the Department of Science and Technology (India) (DST) gave a development grant to the centre. Starting from December 2006, the centre is being developed as a DST Centre for Mathematical Sciences. DST has similar centres at three other locations in India. [3]

From 1977 to 2006, the activities at the centre were carried out by a group of researchers in Kerala, mostly retired professors, through voluntary service. Starting from 2007, DST created full-time salaried positions of three assistant professors, one full professor and one liaison officer. They are at Pala Campus. DST approved up to 15 junior research fellows (JRF) and one senior research fellow (SRF). They are the current PhD students at the Pala Campus. They would receive their PhD degrees from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. [3]

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by the efforts of both Church Mission Society missionaries like Jon Munro and clergy of Catholic church like Fr Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Fr Charles Lavigne and were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala, primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, and Muslim Educational Society (MES), also made significant contributions to the progress on education in Kerala. Local schools were known by the general term kalaris, some of which taught martial arts, but other village schools run by Ezhuthachans were for imparting general education. Christian missionaries and British rule brought the modern school education system to Kerala. Ezhuthu palli was the name used in earlier times. The word was derived from the schools run by the Buddhist monasteries. For centuries, villages used to set up an ezhuthupally or ashan pallikoodam with one or two teachers. Students used to go this school from nearby areas and learn languages, literature, mathematics, grammar etc. After completing this, students may continue study about specific subjects such as ayurveda, astrology, accounting etc. Censuses during the 1800s showed that Travancore, Cochin, and Kannur areas have many such schools.

Mahatma Gandhi College is a college in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It was founded by Mannathu Padmanabhan, the founder of the Nair Service Society. The college is affiliated to University of Kerala and is managed by Nair Service Society. The pioneer institution in Thiruvananthapuram having "College with potential for excellence" awarded by NAAC. As per the 2019 NIRF rankings, Mahatma Gandhi College stands at 68th rank in India and fourth rank in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Travancore Devaswom Board is a semi-government organisation in the erstwhile Travancore, now southern part of the State of Kerala in India, constituted to manage the Hindu Temples in Kerala, with head office at Nandancode in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram [Trivendrum]. He received the TWAS Prize of The World Academy of Sciences in 2013 and the Goyal prize in 2019.

Kerala Science Congress is an annual gathering of Kerala-based scientists and scholars organised by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for revitalizing Research and Development activities in Kerala and to identify new talents in scientific research in Kerala. KSCSTE is an autonomous body constituted by the Government of Kerala. The gathering features talks by invited scientists, presentations of research papers and awards of various prizes.

Kottayam district is a centre of education in Kerala state. The Orthodox Theological Seminary at Chungam was the first institution to teach English in South India. It was founded in 1815 by Colonel John Monroe. The C.M.S High School was founded by the British missionary, Benjamin Bailey. The first college in Kerala state and the second established under British rule in India was the C.M.S. College (1840). Mahatma Gandhi University is located in Kottayam district. Later, the clergies of Catholic Church, on seeing a need for a English High School for students of Central Travancore, established a residential high school St Berchmans English High School in 1891 in Changanasserry under leadership of Fr Charles Lavigne, then vicariate apostolate of Kottayam. Even though it was started as a school for seminarians, it was made to public soon itself. In 1922, Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry founded the famous SB College Changanassery for both intermediate students and scholars in Central Travancore. Today, both CMS College and SB College are recognised, for their legacy, as reputed and noted institutions of Kerala.

Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, is a college for higher education, located at Kuravilangad, Kottayam, Kerala. It was founded on 3 April 1964, under the inspiration of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Palai, by St.Mary's Forane Church, Kuravilangad. The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala. It is a NAAC re-accredited college with 'A++' grade.

Aryambika S. V. is a Malayalam language poet from Kerala, India. She received several awards including Yuva Puraskar by Sahithya Akademi and Kanakasree Award by Kerala Sahitya Akademi.
