Chaumont-devant-Damvillers is a commune in the Meuse department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. It is known as the place where the last soldier to die in the First World War was killed, when American Henry Gunther died charging a German position sixty seconds before the Armistice came into effect. [3]

Henry Nicholas John Gunther was an American soldier and possibly the last soldier of any of the belligerents to be killed during World War I. He was killed at 10:59 a.m., about one minute before the Armistice was to take effect at 11:00 a.m.

The canton of Montmédy is an administrative division of the Meuse department, northeastern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Montmédy.
