The Republic of China, commonly known as "Taiwan", competed as Chinese Taipei at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China from 4 to 20 February 2022. [1] [2] [3] Because of the political status of Taiwan and the One-China policy, the ROC national symbols will not be used as stipulated in the Nagoya Resolution in 1979 forcing the ROC athletes to compete under the Chinese Taipei moniker since 1984.
Huang Yu-ting and Ho Ping-jui were the country's flagbearers during the opening ceremony. [4] [5] [6] Meanwhile alpine skier Lee Wen-yi was the flagbearer during the closing ceremony. [7] [8]
Since the end of the Chinese Civil War, the Kuomintang-ruled Republic of China has retained control of only Taiwan, formerly a Qing prefecture that was previously under Japanese colonial rule from 1895 to 1945, and a few other minor islands. [9] When international recognition shifted to the Chinese Communist Party's People's Republic of China in the 1970s and under the PRC's One-China principle, the only way the ROC could participate in international organizations was under a name acceptable to the PRC. [10] Nevertheless, the ROC was allowed to compete under that name at the 1972 Winter Olympics and the 1976 Winter Olympics. [11] [12]
The ROC boycotted the Olympics in 1976 and 1980 after not being allowed to compete under the name "Republic of China." [13] Chinese Taipei accepted the Nagoya Resolution in 1981 and first officially participated in the Olympics at the 1984 Winter Olympics. [10] [13] Chinese Taipei has sent delegations to every Winter Olympic Games since, making Turin their seventh appearance at a Winter Olympics. [14] Their delegation to Turin consisted of a single competitor in luge, Ma Chih-hung. [15] He was accompanied to Turin by coaches and teammates to act as logistical support. [16] Ma was the flag bearer for the opening ceremony [17] while a volunteer carried the flag for the closing ceremony. [18]
The Chinese Taipei team announced in January 2022 that its athletes would not partake in the opening or closing ceremonies, citing COVID-19 pandemic measures and delayed flights. [19] [20] The decision was reached as a PRC official wrongly labelled the ROC as "Taipei, China". [21] After the International Olympic Committee issued a statement confirming that all teams must send personnel to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies, the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee declared that the ROC would attend both ceremonies. [22] In turn, the Taiwan Association for Human Rights and other organizations protested the CTOC's decision to attend the ceremony, opining that the ROC's attendance was an endorsement of PRC's poor human rights record. [23]

"Chinese Taipei" is the term used in various international organizations and tournaments for groups or delegations representing the Republic of China (ROC), a country commonly known as Taiwan.
Chinese Taipei sent a delegation to compete at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy from 10–26 February 2006. Although the nation is known as Taiwan or the Republic of China, the International Olympic Committee mandates that the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee flag and name is used, and not the flag of Taiwan, as per the Nagoya Resolution. This was Chinese Taipei's seventh time participating in the Winter Olympic Games. The Chinese Taipei delegation consisted of a single athlete, luger Ma Chih-hung. He finished 28th in the men's singles.
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), competes as "Chinese Taipei" (TPE) at the Olympic Games since 1984. Athletes compete under the Chinese Taipei Olympic flag instead of the flag of the Republic of China; for any medal ceremony, the National Flag Anthem of the Republic of China is played instead of the National Anthem of the Republic of China.
The Republic of China (ROC) took part in the opening ceremony of the 1924 Summer Olympics, but its four athletes, all of whom were tennis players, withdrew from competition. The ROC participated in its first Olympic Games in 1932 under the name of China. After the World War II, the ROC competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The ROC delegation at the 1948 Summer Games is the only ROC delegation composed of athletes from both mainland China and island of Taiwan in Olympic history. In 1932 and 1936, athletes from the island of Taiwan competed as part of the team of Japan.
Chinese Taipei sent a delegation to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 12–28 February 2010. Although the nation is known as Taiwan or the Republic of China, the International Olympic Committee mandates that the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee flag and name is used, and not the flag of Taiwan, as per the Nagoya Resolution, which Chinese Taipei accepted in 1981. This was Chinese Taipei's eighth time participating in the Winter Olympic Games. The Chinese Taipei delegation consisted of a single athlete, luger Ma Chih-hung. He finished 34th in the men's singles event.
