Colston-Ariston

Colston was a British electrical appliance manufacturer, founded by ex-Hoover director Sir Charles Colston^[1] in 1955, that made compact dishwashers.

In 1962 it merged with entrepreneur John Bloom's rapidly expanding Rolls Razor washing machine company, which also concluded a deal to distribute Prestcold refrigerators. However the company hit difficulties due to conventional retailers slashing prices in response, a postal strike that dried up their supplies of coupons which was their only source of obtaining customers, and arguably, market saturation. As sales began to slow, Bloom cut prices and introduced ‘double offers’ such as washing machine and fridge packages, free weekend breaks and even his own trading stamps. The company collapsed in 1964 with massive debts. Liquidators found thousands of unsold washing machines in warehouses.

Manufacture continued with machines built by the engineering company Tallent (who had built the company's dishwashers, and was one of the company's major creditors). Tallent briefly re-branded the machines under its own name, but by 1965 they were marketed as Colstons before the appliance division of Tallent was taken over by the Italian firm Ariston in 1979.

Production of the twin tub was continued by Tallent but now branded Colston. The company then decided to source a larger dishwasher and front loading washing machine from Italy. Colston was the first company to introduce a washer drier to the UK market place. Gradually with the help of Colston, these products were improved considerably during the 1970s and the company was profitable. Michael Colston^[2] then decided to sell the company to the Italian company Merloni who made all sorts of products including the Ariston brand. Initially the company traded as Colston-Ariston, dropping the Colston name after a few years. The service division split from the sales division as Ariston Group Service under Don Campbell. The sales division now not only sold a huge range of domestic appliances, White Goods, but also had a built in division as well as selling complete kitchens. Finally there was a baths and water heating division selling a top range of baths, heating elements and gas boilers under Malcolm Blount. The first years trading of the new group made enough profit to pay for the take over but after that the sales side continually struggled. The Service side continued to make good annual profits but after a few years heads began to roll and new appointments made. In the mid 80's Italy installed their own head of sales and even though the service side was profitable, Italy wanted it run closer to the Italian model. The service workforce started to fragment after being run like a family over decades. Some managers left followed by Don Campbell on a matter of principle. By this time Ariston had taken over Indesit and it was decided to amalgamate the service divisions. Further take overs included Creda and Hotpoint to make Merloni one of the biggest domestic appliance companies operating in the UK.

Indesit Company is an Italian company based in Fabriano, Ancona. It is one of the leading European manufacturers and distributors of major domestic appliances. It claims to be the undisputed leader in major markets such as Italy, the UK and Russia. Founded in 1975 and listed on the Milan stock exchange since 1987, the group posted sales of €2.7 billion in 2013. It has eight industrial areas in Italy, Poland, the UK, Russia and Turkey, and 16,000 employees. Since 2014 the majority of the company is owned by the American company Whirlpool.

Candy is an Italian domestic appliance maker and is a subsidiary of Chinese multinational home appliances company Haier. It is based in Brugherio, near Milan.

Rolls Razor Limited was a British company known first for its manufacture of a sophisticated safety-razor and later, under new ownership, an "affordable" twin-tub washing machine.

John Bloom was a British entrepreneur, best known for his role in the "Washing Machine Wars" of 1962–64 when he drastically reduced prices by direct sales that cut out the retailers. His company Rolls Razor made great inroads into the market but several manufacturers obtained injunctions to stop them selling at below the fixed retail price. His operation was also hit by a long postal strike and the withdrawal of a major backer, forcing the company into liquidation. Bloom was a controversial figure whose aggressive techniques shook up a complacent market but who gave new power to the consumer. His often-repeated motto "it's no sin to make a profit" became the title of his memoirs.

Olympic Group is an Egyptian group of companies operating mainly in the field of domestic appliances. The main products it manufactures are washing machines, refrigerators, electric water heaters and gas cookers. It also operates in the fields of IT and real estate. It owns the licensing rights for Sony products in Egypt. Olympic Group has acquired "IDEAL", a formerly state-owned appliances giant.

Vittorio Merloni was an Italian entrepreneur and industrialist. He was the honorary chairman of Indesit and Fineldo, the family holding company that controls Indesit and other group interests.

Servis was a British white goods brand. The company was founded in 1929 in Darlaston, an area of the West Midlands renowned for manufacturing. The company started out as a manufacturer, but fell into difficulties in the 1980s. From 1991 to 2008, the brand was owned and manufactured by Italian white goods company Antonio Merloni SpA. Antonio Merloni entered administration in 2008 and ceased manufacturing Servis appliances. In 2011, the brand was sold to Turkish white goods and TV manufacturer Vestel who relaunched the brand in 2012.

BSH Hausgeräte GmbH is the largest manufacturer of home appliances in Europe and one of the leading companies in the sector worldwide. The group stemmed from a joint venture set up in May 1967 between Robert Bosch GmbH (Stuttgart) and Siemens AG (Munich), and it posted annual sales of 15.9 billion euros in the year 2022. BSH is an acronym for Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte.

Aristide Merloni, was an Italian businessman, and founder of the Merloni industries. He started his entrepreneurial adventure with the production of scales. In the following decades, he developed a large range of products, from gas cylinders to water heaters, from bathtubs to household appliances and kitchen furniture. From his name, Aristide, the company drew inspiration to create its historical, most famous trademark, Ariston.

The headquarters of the company was in Schorndorf in Baden-Württemberg until 2006 when it relocated to Stuttgart. Whirlpool has closed its three plants in Calw (refrigerators/freezers), Neunkirchen (dishwashers) and Schorndorf. Since 2012 all Bauknecht branded products have been manufactured outside Germany.

Amica is a global manufacturer of household appliances headquartered in Wronki, in western-central Poland. The company produces refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, electric stoves, kettles for the kitchen under the brands Hansa, CDA, Gram.
