The Crystal Palace Football Club Player of the Year is awarded at the end of each season. Since the inaugural award was made to John McCormick in 1972, 37 players have won the award. [1] Nine of these players have won the award for a second time, the most recent being Wilfried Zaha. Three players have received the award on more than two occasions, Zaha and Jim Cannon have won it three times and Julián Speroni four times. Paul Hinshelwood was the first to win the trophy in consecutive seasons, a feat since emulated by Andrew Johnson, Julián Speroni and Wilfried Zaha, with the latter two going on to win in a third consecutive season. The current incumbent of the award is Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was the 2023–24 recipient. [2]

The 2013 Football League Championship play-off final was an association football match which was played on 27 May 2013 at Wembley Stadium, London, between Crystal Palace and Watford. The match was to determine the third and final team to gain promotion from the Football League Championship, the second tier of English football, to the Premier League. The top two teams of the 2012–13 Football League Championship season gained automatic promotion to the Premier League, while the teams placed from third to sixth place in the table partook in play-off semi-finals; Watford ended the season in third position while Crystal Palace finished fifth. The winners of these semi-finals competed for the final place for the 2013–14 season in the Premier League. Winning the game was estimated to be worth up to £120 million to the successful team.

That season, Crystal Palace participated in the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup. Frank de Boer was appointed as manager of Palace before the season began, only to be sacked on 11 September 2017 after losing his first four Premier League games without scoring. Former England national team manager Roy Hodgson was confirmed as his replacement the next day. Palace finished in 11th place in the Premier League, and were knocked out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the third and fourth rounds, respectively.

The series features fly-on-the-wall footage recorded during that league season, which had never been released, as well as interviews with celebrity supporters, players and staff that were involved throughout the season.
